The main (well known) issue with this chorus is its poor buffer circuit. I am absolutely an advocate for using a few buffers or buffered pedals throughout your pedal signal chain. Its just a fact that they are nessesary. But when the buffers are designed poorly or lazily by selecting less than ideal component values for filtering or less than ideal buffer circuits altogether you end up with a pedal that removes high end from your signal when the pedal is bypassed. So a lot of M234 users complain that whenever the M234 is in their signal chain their tone sounds bland and starved of high end. So several years ago I worked out a true bypass mod for the M234. Its not a mod I recommend for beginner builders/modders cause you are going to be working with very delicate pads and surface mount components. But it absolutely makes this pedal significantly better. I just wish MXR would go back to the drawing board and ideally redesign the buffer and use a better buffer circuit. That or at least make it internally adjustable so you can run it in the stock buffered configuration or in true bypass. But i think EVERY pedal built these days should have that option. With guitar players using more and more pedals and elaborate setups becoming more common it just makes so much sense to give the player the ability to choose exactly where their buffers are in their signal chain and which pedals they want to run in true bypass. I also think the M234 effect tonality can be improved even further by removing some of the filtering. Its seems they went overboard with filtering probably to make sure there wouldnt be noise or stray oscillations when run with the level and high/low pots all the way up. So when i did the true bypass mod i tweaked the filtering and got a significantly better fuller chorus that sounded really really good. But like I mentioned before if i ran the level up past 75% with the high and low above 90% the pedal would introduce a swell of oscillation. So had I took the time to balance the filtering I could have significantly improved the "lushness/fullness" of the effect without the risk of oscillation on the higher settings. But a similar improvement can be had by just adding an EQ pedal in the fx loop of your amp and after the M234. That way you can get a boost in level that stays clean cause your past the amps preamp and your not hitting the M234 input harder so its not cliiping the effect. Then you can dial in a little more hoygh end shimmer with the EQ also.

Yeah, but will it chug?

I got it and it's ok. The sounds are great but it's not at all easy to switch up those preset patterns on the fly with your foot. It doesn't stay in preset switching mode long enough, and it's too easy to accidently turn it off when you step on both buttons to activate switching mode. Otherwise, many of the rock beats are too busy, especially some of the built-in fills. Also, it sounds pretty bad through a guitar amp, so it's not great in a signal chain. It sounds way better through almost any speaker that doesn't color the tone.

Thanks for the detailed review and live demo! This helped me make up my mind towards the lr baggs eq. I bought the align delay pedal and it's been great so far, left a good reference as to their build quality.

Just an idea: maybe you could have zoomed in on the pedal so we could see the settings. I had no interest in seeing an old newspaper, an old keyboard, an old box for an antique child’s organ. Sheesh dude, show the pedal up close.

"Resetting" your EQ, whatever that means, is not the job of the "sound man". His or her job is to give the audience a clean, natural, and balanced mix of your band's music where every sound source is well seated for maximum clarity and perception. Your job is to perform at your best. If what you call a "sound man" is really a bartender whose been handed a laptop, that's a scenario you should never accept to begin with.

Excellent! I’ve been using one setting on an old Boss SYB-3 to get these sounds, but this seem much more versatile and focused, with immaculate tracking. I’ve been learning that “Get On The Floor” Louis Johnson bassline, too, that’s super groovy! An underrated MJ song! This is the quintessential Funk effect!
