The original by Jaco is unbeatable. I enjoy the covers as variations, but they don't add anything better to Jaco's way of playing it. It's his composition anyway and he got the spirit and tone perfect.

Just look at his facial expressions when it kicks off. It’s of pure confidence and authority over an extremely complex piece. Jaco played drums on the album version too I think. His fluidity on fretless is pretty much stunning.
lord know what rhythm the kick drum is going, it might be a double pedal and the guitarist spent most the time looking at pedals and amps trying to get the sound perfect hahaha. very technically challenging but still a really strong sense of melody and progression

The thing I don't like about this cover (as impressive as it is) is that Marcus never places himself as the bass player and lays that very needed low end. The great thing about Jaco's playing in this tune is exactly that. No matter how complicated, gimmicky, fast, or solo-y he played, he never forgot to lay the low end and groove.

When I think Jaco, I think thin tone, very busy, and soloing all over the place sometimes not leaving much room for anyone else. (Which is exactly what Wayne Shorter used to say about Jaco). This tune doesn't really have a bass line except the whole thing which is a written line.
