thank you for your kind words. I use several different brands. I have handmade watercolours in my collection from artisans who make them themselves. But also Daniel Smith (which is my main brand), Winsor & Newton, Sennelier, Qor, Kuretake & Schminke. Each brand is different and each colour from each brand will be different because they use different recipes. The indigo from Daniel Smith is different from that of Winsor & Newton. Many of these companies offer dot charts of their colours to try out each colour before committing to buy them in a tube. Highly recommend getting some to try out

I've been going back and forth between buying a Sennelier set with spaces for more chosen individually from other brands, just to get a nice box and base set of colours to start with most importantly... Or just going all out, getting a nice empty box on Etsy (prefer wood plus maybe a ceramic mixing tray I can remove for easy cleaning) and buying all my colours individually. Which is where I'm now heading after both your advice and personally mulling day in day out for too long, with endless paints in my Jackson Arts shopping basket, haha. I've already got a Schminke dot sheet, they don't do one for Sennelier, and the full size Daniel Smith one is forever out of stock... I'm thinking I may just dive in to DS and build a good base set from that range, with mixing predominantly in mind, and then can expand from there with extras from any brand. Being a calligrapher I, like you, also have many handmade watercolours, and gouache paints, from various artisans who make them themselves and they are a joy to use! Strangely I hadn't even considered the use of them as an extension of my painting materials library until now. In fact I imagine many of my fountain pen inks (I'm drowning in samples, and many beautiful greens - my favourite colour!) could be used to achieve some very creative effects too alongside the paints. It'll be fun to experiment. I live in a wonderful little village tucked against high chalk cliffs, with beautiful rockpools, then ancient woodland, vast fields and all sorts of countryside to discover the other side. So I'm looking forward to creating work to honour it all, including my lands history and folklore etc. I thank you deeply for all your inspiration! I'd been in a bit of an artistic block/slump for some time, bar my calligraphy and a few drawings done for friends, until one day I came across this video and more of your work. Now I've got that artistic fire in my belly back! 😄

it isn't meant to be a novel at all. The writing supports the imagery. It is meant to spark imagination and it isn't a book which has a main character or any adventures. If your son loves art and anything folklore he might like it. But it isn't at all an adventure book or kid lit novel
