Buying a used car in Costa Rica on a tourist Visa. Cost of living July 2023
Hi, my name is Kimberly. I watch your channel. I’m moving there in mid November so for somebody that doesn’t want to purchase a car right away and wants to stay under 1000 a month and has never been there before. Where would you say to aim for? I have a large dog as well, do you need air conditioning over there by Porto Viejo? Do you get hot ?would a person be able to study and relax? I am going back to school online to finish my degree. Thank you any help would be appreciated ! I am not super foo foo, but can’t really rough it either.
Hello Kimberly 👋 You can live anywhere for $1,000 a month, that is my target high price, but I usually hit around $800. As far as A/C in Puerto, if you have a breeze, you can get by. I am lucky enough to have elevation and nice breeze at the new place. It's easier without a car on this side than with 1. And you can install a fence gor your dog if needed...I'll shoot a quick video...I passed on a lot of places for an easy fix. Thanks for watching 😀 Happy Travels
The electricity is VERY high here. Electricity bill is usually $20-30 without aircon...can easily hit $2-300 with.
you should make more videos and longer...if you are still down there i am moving to my place in santa lucia...maybe could share some insight
Good morning, I hoping to start making some more videos soon. Had to move unexpectedly due to a crazy neighbor. Am all settled in the new place in Puerto Viejo...will be able to start running around soon. Doing a visa run/vacation to Bocas del Tor Panama next month...keep your eye out. Happy Travels 😊
❤love sloths
I have a couple in my yard a few times a week. I'll take some more videos when they are more active.
@@LiveSlowDieWhenever thank jpu.
Amazing 😻
Thanks 😆
What's the best way to find a rental? I plan on moving back in about 4 months and I'm looking for something long term. I lived in Quepos before, and was renting through a longterm airbnb rental but that was years ago. Now the prices are through the roof. Some asking $1200 a month on airbnb and it's crazy. I'm looking for more of less the same amenities you have here. You've got a good place for the location and price!
Hi, It kinda depends on location. I was looking into Manuel area a couple years ago, prices were insane every avenue I looked. Hear that it's overrun these days and lost it charm. FB Marketplace is really good these days. 4 months and you will be landing at the beginning of high season...higher prices and less inventory. Air BnB works better during the off season to turn a short term into long. Market saturation with those types of rentals here now, so easier to find. Everybody and their brother has a cabina or 2 for rentals now. Hit a local FB group and just watch there too. I stay away from the big ones with too much activity. Hit me up if you have anymore questions...I usually stay around $800 a month regardless of where I live. Happy Travels 😊
you need a pool to dip into ...i bought a place in santa lucia up the road from chachagua,,,nice area
Had one at the last place I lived there...Condominio Nakury 2...was a lifesaver in that heat. There is a video on it I think 🤔 😅
Do you have to provide contact information and address of a hotel of somewhere in Nicaragua at the Nicaraguan border if im just doing the border run?? I have no contacts there, address, ect. I see this informartion on the form and it wont let me proceed without filling those sections out.
Jorge does the form for you....he does a group form....Nicaragua has a form similar to the Pasa de Salud here. They do NOT ask you for anything at the Nicaragua immigration. I just say only here for passport stamp. The entrance and exit counters are literally 6 feet apart. It is totally opposite of the Paso Canoas Panama border. Nicaragua immigration are super chill and friendly 👌 They are getting their $16...don't care after that. The building is newer and air conditioned with very few people.
Maybe just put in a "dummy" hotel if not using Jorge? Not like they are going to check. They only ask ...occupation, marital status, and phone number.
@@LiveSlowDieWhenever Thank you so much. I'm almost there, not with Jorge though, just on a bus. I couldn't find his Facebook page.
Thank you for the helpful information. I can not find his page on Facebook. I am a bit pressed on time and would like to contact him as soon as possible. Is there any way you can send me a link to his page my friend?

@@LiveSlowDieWhenever to be honest the beach even though the water was warm I still enjoyed it.. went to the Jaguar rescue to see the sloths and monkeys.. before Puerto Viejo we stayed in turrialba great time.
👋 Hi nice house but who is Shadow??
My black dog I got in Chachagua....the crazy one 😉
$800 a month?!?! That's a $3-350 rental maximum and even then you are getting the gringo price .
Not here....throw in the add ons...we'll worth it. $350 gets you a tiny place in a loud barrio around here. Plus the peace of mind having a solid landlord down here is priceless as you well know. I don't have to hear any yappy Chihuahuas or roosters at 330 AM. 350 yards from the beach and less than a kilometer to 2 big grocery stores. Couldn't ask for much more...
$500 a month gets you a clean 2br Tico house with Tico furniture. $700 plus utilities for more elbow room. I'm 6'1 and cook all the time...really need my space.
Exciting! Goof for you!!!
The place is awesome....come visit again soon 😀
Love from your next door neighbour <3
Enjoy your vacation 😀 Pleasure to meet you..
Honestly I'd like the same thing as you. From Wisconsin and I'm looking to be down there for 6 months or so just to check out the place.
I'm from small town Minnesota. I recommend doing 2 or 3 months in different areas...unless you really like or dislike?? San Ramon and Perez Zeledon are great Valley communities with perfect weather 👌 I'm in Puerto Viejo now and absolutely love it!! Not a beach person much...but the people are super chill!!! Happy Travels 😊
Is it still only service connected disabilities that are covered if the veteran is 100 percent P&T?
For FMP...yes. I am pretty sure you will get the same coverage once the hospitals here are tied in for that. Sarah Elena is in close contact with the person connecting Hospital Biblica and CIMA with the VA. It's the same person mediating...so to say...so should be easier. But it's the VA I'm 100% plus, so hoping for the outpatient services myself. They didn't list all of mine when I registered...if something is missing, have them adjust.
@@LiveSlowDieWhenever I guess what I'm saying is that in the US eith 100% I you can be treated for every issue. Even if it is not service connected because you are 100 percent. So the question would be is it the same outside of the US? Or is it jonlt service connected issues that are covered?
@alanm03 it is ONLY service connected issues listed by the FMP award letter. I also get optical, dental, etc...in the states due to my rating...everything is covered. The FMP is for S/C issues only....but it is global.
@alanm03 my 100% for PTSD doesn't do anything here. The other 80% Medical issues are covered once enrolled.
@@LiveSlowDieWhenever Okay thanks.

Looks like your trying to bring america to Costa Rica with your manicured yards and gated community with no Chihuahuas barking
@kimanipatterson2653 😆 🤣 😂 they can stay there...it's nice and relaxing here. I moved to Puerto Viejo 2 months ago. Got a furnished house 100 yards from the beach for $700 a month. No Chihuahuas 😉 Sold the car and bought a bike...back to basics. Happy Travels 😊 😃
Oki doky ❤
wow, don't forget whoever bought the car before you had to pay the heavy tax and if it was a tico they want that tax back plus double the value of the p.o.s. car..but when you sell it they want it cheap so i say "F" em....pura vida....i have a house close to la fortuna
It's why I always buy inexpensive cars...yeah...they doctor the value gor taxing at every sale. I was floored about how many total frigging strangers wanted me to hold the note. No more cars for me. Can't use them around Viejo anyways...

@user-uk3uj6zs1w a lot of people get caught up being belly up at the bar everyday. I rarely donk anymore, waste my money on good food these days. Just walking around and checking stuff out is very underrated. Trying to train myself to slow down and stop thinking...
Just found your channel and really like your style I'm in a town called Tronadora near Tilarán on the other side of the lake from Fortuna. I found a similar situation where I pay about $500 month for a 3bd 1ba really nice house overlooking the lake. It was also a handshake deal with no deposit. I plan to be here awhile but also like you... looking for my happy place. I'll be checking out your other videos as it looks like you've already moved to Puerto Viejo which is way up on my must see list. Excellent advice in this video. Pura vida compañero
Heya...yup, been in Viejo a month and a half. Super chill...love it here. Much cooler than that area with the sesbreeze.
Well that's very interesting. I was in San Ramon for 3 years after I got out of the Escazú Santa Ana area, and absolutely loved it. Mainly because of the climate, it was so perfect. But also the excellent feria and access to all the major conveniences. I was just looking to get closer to the water which is why I moved. I really like it here but miss the milder climate. Very interesting to hear it's not too hot in Puerto
@stokes111100 Perez Zeledon has the same climate as San Ramon...45 minutes to Domincal. This side is less people...off season...and cheaper than the Pacific. I just popped another video..
As a Tico, I really appreciate this video on rental tips and the cost of living in La Fortuna. La Fortuna is such a beautiful area with its amazing natural attractions and friendly community. Your advice on navigating the rental market and managing expenses is really practical and spot on. It's great to see useful information like this being shared to help people make the most of their stay in our wonderful country. Thanks for providing such valuable insights!
Thank you for the kind words. I had a great experience there. Now I am near Puerto Viejo....absolutely love it. Will be making a couple videos this week.... Take Care, Mark
I used it in mexico after i had stents put in, paid in less than 6 months. Only for service related issues
Happy to hear. I hope all is working well for you 🙏 Out of curiosity....did they reimburse you with direct deposit or paper check? The reason that I'm asking is...a viewer in Thailand commented a couple days ago that they only did paper checks and was a pain over there.. Thank you 😊
What part of Mexico Johnny? I live in Mazatlan and go back and forth for my 6 month check. Don't mind it in the summer but no fun in the winter
@@garlandetheridge9902 I used the hospital in La Punta
FMP sucks!!! Now I am told my claim might take up to 2 years to pay out, if at all,, bs
Wow...WTF? This is for a S/C issue? What's the excuse from them??
FMP = 6 month wait for payment via paper check. I'm in Thailand. We have gone from 10 hospitals accepting FMP to 4 nationwide in the past year because of FMP's lousy service. VHA, FMP's parent side of the VA refuses to set up a secure claims portal or set up direct deposit which they claim not to have the information for. VA has direct deposit information on 100% of Disabled Veterans. I run a F B group called FMP and VA disability....All are welcome to join.
Thank you for the intel. Don't they just add the reimbursement to your regular VA pay method? I was told 30 day reimbursement after receiving fax from Doctor's appointment with payment confirmation. Also, I was told that the FMP is not care giver specific...only service connected issue based? Any more up to date information is greatly appreciated!! Thanks Mark
@LiveSlowDieWhenever FMP pays separately from disability. I don't know who told you 30 days. It takes them that long just to read your claim. FMP is not Dr specific, just specific about service connected conditions and that all medications are US FDA approved.
@brianwl it's what they told me when I registered and got my award letter. I know that it's a separate payment, but same method. Seeing that it's direct deposit, I didn't see any problems coming...although, I have not used. This is what was told to me....If I made an appointment for approved SC issue, just fax the receipt to Denver with the VA form and would be reimbursed in 30 days. That being said, my award letter didn't include all of my SC issues. And I know 30 days is EXTREMELY optimistic when dealing with the VA. There are 2 hospitals in Costa Rica that are working to get directly linked to the VA and another that does CnPs. Thanks again for the information.
@@LiveSlowDieWhenever I see. Their website specifically states they pay by check. This is becoming a real problem because some countries no longer allow paper banking. As for your award letter, did you include a copy of your disability award page from the VA when you applied? They're generally pretty good about fixing clerical errors. Just need to show them where they messed up.
@brianwl Thank you very much for the information 😊 I did not include my award letters...mainly wanted to get registered and will adjust when needed. Will pass along the pay by check...
I wasn`t there yet, is it to dangerous to live not in a guarded area?
Not really 😕 Most household thefts are from a "friend" or employee of landlord. No real problems with strong arm robbery unless in a bad area at night. Security guards at complexes are deterrent, not protection. Observe and report, but don't really do shit. Just be mindful of situations and be careful trusting people....especially Ex Pats!! I am the only gringo in the Barrios that I live and feel very safe. More white people equals higher prices and more people trying to afford their lifestyle with your money. Is MUCH safer than the US these days...take your time and explore different areas a couple months at a time. You will find a nice fit for you. Happy Travels 😊 Mark
How's your Spanish?? I'm wondering how long it'll take for a non native to learn haha
Mine is medium. I know a bunch of words, but putting them together is a different story...progress and perfection 👌 Bit the fact that I try goes a long way here. Timewise...if you only hang around expats speaking only English...will not happen. Best suggestion....learn the vowels...no long and short. Js are Hs and H is silent.... Happy Travels 😊 Mark
When we came to CR for the first time on our scouting trip, we went to several different cities and stayed at different types of Airbnbs. People don't realize how many owners are willing to rent to you long term if you just ask. It's much less of a hassle for the owner to not have to keep cleaning up after guests and all of that. For you, it's nice to just try a place out for a while and see if you like it, or just like the area in general. You get to know how loud things are, what the traffic is like...etc. There was one place that we thought we really liked from the online pictures and we reserved it for three weeks, but we were considering living there full-time. The owner actually let us come by and look at the place to see if it would work for us. Turns out that it wasn't going to work for a variety of reasons, to the point where we actually cancelled our reservations, but the point is that they were going to rent it to us for way less than they were listing it on Airbnb. The key to finding places like that is to look at how many views they have or how booked up it is. If the numbers are low, you are more likely to find someone that is willing to work with you and would love to have long term renters. Sometimes people are just trying to Airbnb because they haven't been able to sell since the market has such high inventory. We ended up renting a place, not through Airbnb (though we did have lots of options through them) in Santa Ana. It's way more than we wanted to pay, but it is a good location and will suit us for now while we transition to living in CR and wait for our residency paperwork to be approved.
Happy that you found a place that is a good fit. I am paying a bit over market value, but still around $800 per month all in, so can't complain. Enjoy your transition....I still get excited about new experiences and places. Mark

Hey bud! Question. Will I be able to drive legally if I choose to stay long-term as a perpetual tourist? Can i leave the country every 90 days and still be fine driving after I get back in? or will my license not be valid in CR?
Vehicle and property ownership has nothing to do with visa status. So, YES 😀 They just kicked up the Visa stay to 180 days....verified. The drivers license is still only valid for 90 as of today...Sep 30, 2023. It's a new upgrade and am sure the DL will be in sync soon. I am a Perpetual tourist myself.
