POINT MECHANISMS - RELIABILTY & VERSATILITY ! Not clever using solenoid point motors ! They hammer the points back & forth, and many commercial brands of "points" including PECO end up breaking their "tiebars", making the point totally useless ! Use proper "slow action" mechanisms such as Fulgurex. Which move the blades slowly and press the blade against the stock rail, ensuring better electrical conductivity. "Slow action" mechanisms do NOT need a CDU which itself ensures the solenoid "Hammers" the point, & of course you save money and wiring. Indeed the Fulgurex type mechanisms come with TWO free switches built in, with space to add TWO more. This then covers and allows "Live Frog" type points to be used (always more reliable than "Dead Frog" types), via one of the free switches. The second switch can also be used to "Interlock" signalling with the points movement. Ensuring a signal cannot show a "Clear line" indication if the point is not set correctly. I've been using Fulgurex mechanisms on Exhibition Layouts for over 30 years without trouble. As these mechanisms are also one of the only types that can cope with Scratchbuilt pointwork, which is "stiffer" to operate than commercial point types ! Further the Fulgurex type mechanism is designed to screw under the baseboard directly beneath the point, only using TWO screws at diagonal corners not 4 screws. A 1mm hole is drilled through the baseboard, for the provided and pre shaped brass crank, that comes with each point. This connects the mechanism to the tiebar. They can however be mounted above the baseboard as an alternative. And even come with a free dustcover for such use. By simply reshaping the 1mm diameter brass crank with an "Omega loop" somewhere along its length. You can also wire two of these mechanism for a Crossover (two points) to just one switch ! Fulgurex mechanisms need a DPDT (Double Pole Double Throw no centre off) type mini toggle switch to make them function. This type of switch which has 6 terminals, simply allows the plus & minus wires of the 12v DC supply to be reversed. To make the point motor go back & forth. Which also means only two wires (not 3) are needed without the problems of requiring a "Common Return" in addition, as per the "Solenoid" wiring method, being shown in the above programme. Fulgurex point mechanisms are therefore constantly live, and have built in "diodes" to detect the reversal of the plus & minus, when you change the switch !!!
