Letters of Travel, Rudyard Kipling
From my library: A collection of Kipling's "letters" from his time in North America (and a bit in Egypt).
Please note that this book has two images of the ancient image of the swastika. Kipling was no Nazi, and after the Nazis used that symbol for their own disgusting cause, he stopped using it in his books.

    130?!! 😳 I own two Folio Society books and hope to one day have three. I own the 2001 edition of "Nineteen Eighty-Four" which I have taken everywhere with me, including the beach and the lunch room at work. I've had it for eighteen years, and it's held up fantastically. The other Folio Society book I own just arrived in the mail yesterday, which is "The Neverending Story." Any edition from any publisher is hard to find, so I just wound up buying a new copy from Folio. I also plan on eventually buying "The Road" from Folio. Like '84, "The Road" is one of my top five favorite novels. As for Moby Dk, my copy is from Easton Press. I'm currently on chapter 65, The Whale as a Dish. I've scuffed it a bit over the years, but it still looks beautiful. My copy of Moby Dk may not be as nice as yours, or as illustrated for sure, but I wouldn't trade it for any other edition because it was a Christmas gift.

    Came across Dana (and this video!) by delving into the Harvard Classics. I’ve honestly never heard of him before, and I teach liberal arts at the college level. Interesting how some authors were deemed essential just a few generations ago, and now are relatively obscure.

      Yes, I've thought about that many times. Sometimes it makes sense, as tastes change, but other times it's hard to understand. Dana is excellent and really interesting from a historical perspective if nothing else.

    Hello.. I typed on RUclips search I didn't like the decameron book to see if I can find others who shared my view of this book and your video poped up first on my search So you are annoyed by the fact the translators skipped a tale from the third but how did they manage the seventh day as it's all about deceiving graphic sex stories ?

    • @librarybooks
      @librarybooks 15 дней назад

      Oh, sorry you didn't like it! Maybe your translation wasn't great. I don't have the bad translation that I complained about, so I can't check it to see how they handled other chapters.

      @hadidaoud7930 15 дней назад

      @@librarybooks sorry am confused you didn't read the whole book ? I am sure the translation in my book ( Arabic by Saleh elmani) was a faithful adaptation to the original text and the seventh day was all about women deceiving their husbands for almost no reason but for lust . It was difficult for me to continue the book at that time and almost dropped it

    • @librarybooks
      @librarybooks 15 дней назад

      @@hadidaoud7930 As I said in the video, I've read one and half translations. The first one, with the note that I complained about, was 30 years ago. I don't have that edition any more, and I certainly don't remember specifics about one chapter or another, other than what I talked about in the video. But I have no reason to think that it was missing any content, since there weren't any other notes to that effect). The second one is in the video. As for being a "faithful adaptation," I didn't mean that the stories in your edition weren't accurate. I meant only that maybe it wasn't as funny or charming, or as well-written as other translations. I didn't realise that you disliked it because of the plot of the stories themselves. I'm sure that those would be the same, and if you didn't like it, then you probably wouldn't like any translation.

    • @hadidaoud7930
      @hadidaoud7930 14 дней назад

      I believe the translations weren't the problem as the problem was the original content itself , imo it was repetitive in many many stories and you can easily remove the stories tellers and reason why they gathered and started telling these stories because they had no characters or any given backgrounds Maybe this book was revolutionary at its time and place with its content (sexual last) But definitely outdated for our current time

    • @librarybooks
      @librarybooks 14 дней назад

      @@hadidaoud7930 As I said in my last comment, you probably wouldn't like any translation. I found it to be a fascinating look into history, if nothing else. What did people find interesting and funny more than 600 years ago in Italy? To me, that alone is worth the effort to read at least a lot of it. To see the way that those people were different from, and the same as, people are today.

    Hey @librarybooks we were wondering if you would be interested in reading the world atlas we wrote? (If not yeah I get it, I might not respond to a random comment in my comment section either ) Our atlas is called "The World A Comprehensive Guide to Geopolitics" It has breakdowns for over 1,400 geographic regions covered. Every continent, every UN member, every partially recognized nation (Taiwan, Kosovo, Palestine etc.), every autonomous region, every external territory. We even included breakdowns for every known base camp in Antarctica, by both summer and winter populations. It has over 440 colorized maps. And over 490 colorized flags. And we even included a geography section full of facts such as the largest rivers, lakes, deserts, the lowest elevations, highest altitudes, longest mountain ranges, most northerly and southerly nations just to name a few. It took us almost 2 years to make. I'm proud of it. We finally published on June 12, 2024. Almost 2 and a half months ago.
