80 Le Rhone Rotary Night Run

After a long day of work, we got this 80 Rhone running perfectly, just in time for a beautiful night-time run. It is wild to think there is that much flame swirling inside the cowl!
Werner Voss Dogfight Moves Fokker Dr I

This is what you've really been wanting to know...next to "Who killed the Red Baron?", this is probably the most asked question: can a Fokker Dr.I do a flat turn like Werner Voss supposedly did in his last dogfight? Well, yes it can 😉 Today, I asked for everything the plane could give me, and it gave it all. I pushed it harder than I've ever pushed it before, and WOW! what a machine! The rudder...

The Camel is running from the Fokker Dr.I (naturally), and the Cub is trying to save him! Notice the rudder turn at the end to point the guns at the Camel.

Tackle the Impossible - Rotary Engine Touch n Go

Some say it can't be done! Here it is though, a preplanned touch n go from idle at touch to full throttle at go! Can't beat the 80 Le Rhone!

Ended up a little on the rich side, but it made a cool video. You can see the spiraling slip stream as the exhaust plume exits.

So working Spandau guns? 😊
Hey man you still around?? Haven’t seen any videos from you? Do you have a web page or something??
Was this built using Ron Sands or redfern plans?
awesome man
Makes you realis how accurate some of the video games actually are.
Great video.. Probably down a quarter or so of oil though.
Nice Lipgloss. How I would of painted my plane in WW1, except for the iron cross on the top of the tail feathers, which is kind of superflous. Even though I did the same thing on my plane tail. But then that's because I don't have roundels on the top wings, but my name across it.
Who flew the Dr-1 with that Distinctive Design in World war 1 . Was it Wolff or Voss ?
Coolest video I’ve seen on RUclips in quite some time!! Amazing 🤩
Awesome. Thank you for posting
Awesome. Thank you so much for sharing
Chris, is this you? Are you rebuilding your Dr1?
There's something touching about seeing it fly side-by-side with the British plane.
Which they did back in the day when they ran out of ammunition...
If ya wanna practice manuvers or try your hand at WWI multiplayer air combat in one of these, there's an app for that now! Cheers!!
Is the guns work?
What plane were used for this, ron sands?
So you fly it for twenty minutes and it takes you two hours to clean it. I just noticed how dirty the lower wing got streaked with oil. How difficult is it to clean that caster oil off the plane after use and how do you do it. Thanks,
Way cool!!!
takes serious courage to go up in one of these old machines!
The real rotary Gnome engine on a DR1 nice flight..🤠🏴🇺🇸👍
Just watched this. That was Awesome!!
Did not have to worry about instruments sticking with all that vibration lol
Can you put the Top Gun theme over this please.
Spectacular!! How loud is it with helmet and ear plugs? Does the noise start to get to you or is it ok? What about wind blast? Is it uncomfortable? Thanks for posting this amazing perspective!
We get to meet the Fokker! 😊
I'm a so so informed dabbler in military aviation. For anyone on here who knows what would be the best maneuver to counter that kind of backless turn? Supposing you were se 5a or spad 13 pilot at 10000 feet or so.
If you're coming from Flying Circus, you don't have to worry, the Dr.1 flight model in that game isn't accurate enough for this yet, they might fix it. If that comes to pass, or if you're just curious in general, my advice. If co-alt, give him a quick burst if you can, reverse the other way (because now he's lost the forward momentum) and speed past faster than he can follow with nose, and run away with twice the engine power. If you were coming in from above, do so from the rear at a 45-75 degree angle, the Dr.1 can't pull nose up that much after doing a "uncoordinated 180 half flatspin" owing to having lost much of it's speed. Then climb back up, and repeat as much as it takes, Don't be afraid to follow a little, so long as you have the airspeed to keep altitude advantage.
What engine is in this plane..
Free as a bird! Nice flying, great airplane.
Starker Film.
Dig!
it's such a nice plane to see running
Fucking awesome become the machine!
God that thing can turn on a dime. Imagine being a green RAF pilot missing his shot only to see it's business end turn around and open up as you zoom uncontrollably right past his guns.
I think that's what Voss was trying to do, knowing he couldn't knock them all out of the sky, was to scare them off with maneuvers like that. And that's nearly what happened to Bowman and Mccudden, Voss saw them come down at various stages in the fight, kicked rudder and pointed nose on for a burst as they boomed past. Which had them think twice. The only issue being, he wasn't fighting average pilots, they got shaken but not frightened.
Amazing! The open exhaust is obvious at night.
Very cool video. I'd read this plan design was all about maneuverability over speed. I'd heard the ailerons being so high above roll center had a noticeable pendulum effect which I think I can see in the tail as the pilot banks to each side at 3:48. Notice the entire fuselage appears to swing back and forth beneath the upper wing like a pendulum. Ground handling seems uncharacteristically excellent for a Fokker Dr1. Maybe longer tail length to accommodate a modern engine weight? Steerable tail skid?

A delight. You fellas make it look like a Fokker Dr1 is something anyone can get into. Very simple, compact engine and the airframe is not made out of space age components, plus the plane requires relatively little space to operate from. So much wing area that it can take off in a very short run up, or am I wrong?
Definitely! It is a wonderful plane to fly! If you want to get in a vintage warbird, this one is the most exciting!
Hello Sir! I'm from Germany. I have photos of Rudolf Klimke's grave. Would you like these? Best regards
Now thats flying, ya don't need ya a*s* on fire to do that.!
Absolutely beautiful the Triplane is my favorite airplane!
i love this airplain! really nice video!
The motor is either on or off right. So is it possible that you turn it off to lose speed and the motor stops altogether from llack of revs.
It has throttle that covers a range of 30-100% thrust. To get below 30%, it uses a "blip switch" to cut the ignition. The airflow keeps the propeller turning in the air except at the slowest speeds, like right right before touching down on landing.
@Chill31000 I heard of pilots during the first world war losing power and forced down. Of course alot of pilots had minimal training but wonder why? Thanks for your answer it gives me insight.
@Vaughan power battle damage will force you down of course. Their ignition systems were relatfragile in those days too, using paper insulation for capacitors and coils in the magnetos, and copper fuel lines.
@@knightsofthesky Excellent thanks.
Fokker D. VII all the way ❤. Beautiful video, thanks for posting
Stunning.
Amazing, so cool. The one plane I’ve never flown but would like too.
Seems like not only can every person build this plane, but also fly it 😂
Beautiful! Are these oil stainhs on the lower wing? On both sides? I am a scale modeler and in the process of weathering a model. TIA for any tips on this matter. Best wishes :-)
Happy you enjoyed it! Look at the Fokker Dr.I album here facebook.com/KOTSWWI?mibextid=ZbWKwL
