Wild camping in the Brecon Beacons, kit reviews and some heavy metal compositions!
I’ve been hiking, wild camping and training with the military in the Brecon Beacons since the late 80's. I’m not a ‘survival expert’ or bushcraftsman, I just love getting out on the hill and trail in all seasons, and enjoying what nature has to offer. I aim to share some of that experience with wild camping kit and trip reviews, and hints & tips to having an enjoyable wild camping experience.

The first video I've published in a very long time - life and health threw a couple of curve-balls, and then along came Covid-19, impacting us all. I'm now fortunate to be living in the Brecon Beacons, so with the hills on my doorstep, I'm determined to make the most of 2021 and beyond. Apologies for the poor sound / light. It was all shot 'on the fly', and was a tad windy up there last week! T...

Good review. I'm thinking hard on one of these but was unsure of it's size when packed down. Looks like it packs down small enough and looks solid too! Many thanks 👍
Enjoyed watching, How much the British Army Inflatable Mat wights? Didn't find it on ebay
Nice review,Love these older system. I’ve been using the old pattern 58 in a Bivvy bag for years, but have just upgraded to the Carinthia copy British Army Modular system. Trying it out on Dartmoor, this weekend. See how I get on with it. Regards
Flares ? !!
Great video, I did the fan dance route last year with my son and best mate ( who did it as part of a job interview back in the day ) every step was torture. Your video gave me the shivers 😁
Looks pretty much the same as the cheaper MTP 45 litre Issue bergen (if you don't mind camo and Mollie straps)
Thanks for viewing. I've looked at some of these cheaper brands and they look good. I think the pricing for the Karrimor Sabre range is way OTT.
Nice pack, but way to many straps and bugles that catch branches and what not.
Yep, gotta keep them tucked away.
Loose straps flapping in the wind. Definitely not cool!
Hi. Would you advise a size smaller than ones normal? Atb.
Definitely. I'm a size Large on all tops (40" chest) but the Medium Snugpak is a great fit. I only wear a couple of baselayers under it, a synthetic and merino, and that's sufficient. This thing is incredibly warm and weatherproof. I'll be testing it out some more this winter. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for Sharing, Thumbs up
Hey PaPa, thanks for the comment. Have subbed to your channel.
Hi RJ. Glad you’re still out there! I thought you’d got lost on a hill somewhere!🏴👍
LOL! Thanks John. Haven't had hardly any time out since this blasted Covid. Hoping to get some more time over winter, with a new pair of Altberg boots to review, and some over nighters planned for 2022. Stay safe.
Thank you. Just bought a Scirocco with no guidance with it at all. This helped a lot. Love Chili-will get some Waytfarer to try-on your recommendation!
Glad to help, sorry for delay! Thanks for watching.
Good informative gen, well presented. I used to carry a sit mat for backpacking/camping, but after seeing one about 7 or 8 years ago I got a fold up German Army sleep mat that lives permanently inside my backpack. Too thin for a comfortable sleep alone, I use it under a lightweight air mattress to protect it from any sharp objects I've missed on the ground (my old bones need more than a roll mat and Thermarest). On its own it provides insulation from the ground, if benighted or injured, and the other item I always carry is a military poncho as an extra waterproof for heavy rain downpours and for an emergency shelter/get out of the hot sun on open ground to avoid heat exhaustion. In colder weather or if there's cold nights forecast, I add a poncho liner or light sleeping bag/lightweight bivvy bag for day walks just in case there's a problem and I have to hunker down. I used to use two 58 pattern ponchos for backpacking, they wore out after 40 years, I replaced them with two USGI woodland camo, not as tough,as the 58s but still top quality... about 200g heavier than the basha. The German mat weighs little and folded up, it's an ace sit or kneeling mat, if I'm walking with friends I can open it up so we can all keep dry bums. Highly recommended.
Some great tips, many thanks for sharing and watching!
By "squaddies" I take it you mean Soldiers?
Unless it's changed in the last 27 years since I left ;)
Quality content mukka love it keep up the hard work inspiring people great views aswell I’ve liked & subscribed also stay safe much appreciated Rucksack Adventures 🇬🇧
Cheers! Much appreciated.
@@breconbeacons21 🙂👍🏻
It's the british army basha Not a bivvy and there not bivvy poles there called basha poles.i hope you got a gortex bivvy bag ie sleeping cover mate
LOL! I don't mind what you call it, long as it keeps the rain off! Got a couple of bivvy bags, cheers!
Good review. The issues with the hip belt and shoulder straps would be a deal breaker for me. I'll stick with my Centurio 30 pack which has the same ability to add side pouches and great straps and cyclops 2 back system.
Many thanks Christelle. I've found recently 14kgs is the sweet-spot for that pack, after that something more substantial needed. Had some mods done to my old Berghaus Cyclops Roc, but really liking the Karrimor SA system, might look to go for a Panther 65L as my main pack. Thanks for watching.
Great video. One suggestion: if you could show on the map the circuit / route taken?
Thanks for the suggestion. Will include on future vids.
Great video. You can in fact store the buffalo system packed / compressed, it won't make any difference. It's mostly down bags that need to have the chance to loft and not be stored in stuff sack or compression sack.
Good point!
its not 6 mm ...
Really enjoying your vids, what `Im seeing lot in these bushcraft kit films is people carry too big a first aid kit then it becomes a nuisance them gets left behind you have the exact right balance if I may make a few of suggestions please ? carry a strong clear polythene bag about 7 inches wide that you can get your hand in up the the elbow a very common accident is scolding / burns from cooking whilst tired ( this is why I hate hooped bivis you need a tent / Tarp you can sit up in when cooking - seen to many guys fall asleep in to their stoves ) if you burn your hand it will be agony you will need to keep it in water at least an hour ,this is not an over reaction its the one item that can not be found any where in your kit when you really need one , a large trauma First field dressing is an absolute MUST but not in your first aid kit in your trouser leg pocket if you ever need to use it for real in a major bleed you must access it in 8 seconds people don`t tend to die bleeding to death direct in a major injury they see the massive bleed they then pass out with the shock of all the blood then bleed to death whilst unconscious , oh an carry a thermometer great way of judging if a member of your group is ill, lip balm is another must but use it daily as a preventative not a cure if you lips get it bad as in arctic or desert conditions you will not be able to eat - even drink and thats really not good. - and learn how to take a pulse one of the best medic skills u can learn study all the different rhythms as this really can help you with an injured person best wishes ,Michael.
Some great points there, Michael. My first field dressing used to live in the left-hand breast pocket of my smock, but that was when I was getting paid for it! As an ex-Combat Med Tech, I used to carry a bigger kit when 'at work', and then later when taking groups out on the hill. As you rightly say, burns were one of the most common injuries - folks sometimes don't pay attention to their cook area stability, and easily knock over a boiling mess tin / pot - Flamazine and cling film were always staples in the med kit! Apologies for the delayed response, life been getting in the way in keeping on top of the channel - thanks for your supoort.
@@breconbeacons21 flamazine and cling film oh the memories ! One of my lasy postings was the old D.K.M.H hospital at Cattrick -now long gone worked in casualty for a while ued to hang out with the alchoholic dentist there he did about an hours work every month ! U know how it is when soldiers have no work they drink !
Great filming bud. 👍👍
Nice review bud. Any idea if you can still buy those buffalo systems and if so where from? I’m UK based, cheers. Simon 👍
Love the bag 💪🏽
Enjoyed watching.. i also prefer a centre zip.. so much easier to use getting in and out of..
Many thanks! Just wish they made more 'bags with centre zip - so obvious ??
@@breconbeacons21 yeah for sure.. i did like the look of ray mears line of bags which were centre zip..expensive though.
Hi mate I've never seen anything like this before! Is that website still going? You mentioned you've had that for 20 years! I definatley don't need this system I have the FECSA modular system however I want one!
Yep, Buffalo Bags still made! www.buffalosystems.co.uk/products/?gender=&activity=&insulation=&system=sleep-system A great bit of kit but on the heavy / bulky side.
I was actually about to get the VJ's, but after seeing your video, I think I'll go with the 200s. How does the aftercare hold up? Like, when you wash them after a muddy race? Thanks
Had no problems with soaking / hosing and scrubbing them after a race - built tough and holding up well after 6 OCRs.
Had a set of these sold it because it's heavy and big packed down and also not very warm at all. I now use a synthetic quilt much warmer and a lot lighter. These are also very snug once inside and come in different sizes as they need to be tight to get any warmth from them 80s tech
Looking to change to a down-bag next year, too. The Buffalo's OK for 3-season, but the double system too heavy and bulky, or maybe I'm just getting old!
I love mine. Best system for a wet changeable country like the U.K. 🇬🇧
Badass band! You guys need more exposure. Will now follow your band for sure.
@pro1league Thanks for your comment - I assume you're referring to the Magnox track 'Awakening'. If so, not a full band (yet!), just me playing around recording and mixing some metal. I'll get some tracks finished this year and get them up on Sound Cloud and Bandcamp. Cheers!
Morning buddy 😁. This is on my wish list lol. Thanks for sharing mate an ya time buddy. ATVB Andy 🇬🇧 👍 ☕
Can you give any more information on the inflatable mattress? Is it military issue I can't find fine one anywhere would appreciate any info thanks
Apologies for the long delay - life got in the way the past couple years. Standard British Army Inflatable Sleep Mat, available on Ebay, Hope that helps :)
Always bring a beer, it’s gear to see a fellow Brit making great videos!
Hi rob love your easy to follow videos ( subbed) I have the same sabre 45 plus side pouches which I love. Inc banshee 200 , rab 900 can't get it lower than about 38 lbs for 2 days food (rat packs) ? What was the weight of your bag ? Although I am an ageing 64 yr old lol keep up the good work ATB
Firstly, sorry for the long delay, life's thrown a couple of curve balls this last year or so, so haven't been able to keep up with with YT. My pack comes in about the same as yours! I see all these ultra-light 'packers saying their pack comes in at 8kg for a 1-night winter camp, but I can't get below 17kg!! Going for the Rab 700 next year and seeing what else I can trim down. Will be getting some more videos up in 2020, so keep an eye out. Hope I can still the same weight when I'm 64! Thanks for the sub. ATB, Rob
That knife is the Hunter model. I prefer the Forester, for the can opener that replaces that serrated specialized blade (gutting blade for hunters), I have no use for it.
Hi FlorinU Ever since the British Army moved over to boil-in-the-bag food, I've never needed a tin opener! We used to have small tins of Bacon Grill and Bacon Burgers, and a small tin opener used to come in the ration pack! I found the small curved blade great for whittling!
do you think its as good as karrimor used to be, the original company ?
Karrimor brand is now owned by the guy who owns Sports Direct. KarrimorSF is a separate company producing military spec kit to a high quality. Pretty comparable to Berghaus military range in my view.
wow, my first double buffalo fibre pile sleep system was from survival aids in maybe 1984 ?
I sacs loops????
"Ice axe" i believe mate
Great video mate & great channel. I watched your wild camping kit list video before this, enjoyed that also. Subbed, I hope you're going to start making videos again soon? You have a talent, it would be a shame to see it go to waste. Thanks for sharing. Atb Shaun
Hi BASHA Dweller, many thanks for your kind words, much appreciated. Been a hectic year work/life getting in the way but plan to be up and running again (literally!) over winter, with poss. winter trips to Brecon and some more reviews. Thanks for your sub and support.
Hi ! Do you think this bag with the two side pouches is comfy enough for a trip a several weeks and something like 20 miles of walk per day ? I'll be filling in water every day 3L and food each 3 days. Thanks a lot
I can only speak from my own experience, but for that sort of trip I'd be going for a more robust pack - bigger Karrimor with adjustable frame. The Sabre is really only designed for short lightweight trips.
I did a camino with one of these and hiked 25 to 35 k a day and it was bulletproof. Rained a couple of days and not a drop inside the bag.
great vids mate subbed ya ATB Kaizer
Many thanks Kaizer!
Get some web dominators, best addition besides the pouches for this superb pack!
one of my fave bits of kit for packs, pouches, battle belts and chest rigs.
Nice review. I'm looking at one of these. How much weight can it comfortably carry? Now that you've had it awhile, how do you feel about the padding?
Last week I went for an overnighter with this backpack (without the pouches). 18kg (mostly water) could be carried reasonably well when utilising the hip belt, but I still got some red marks on my traps.
Good video enjoyed watching, subbed you. Thanks Steve.
Cheers Steve!
Really enjoying your channel
Cheers Peter!
The buffalo look the business. We have similar kit. I keep my army self inflatable with my army kip mat, and roll them up as one unit, and this sits under the neck of my bergen. It saves room in bugen, would you tave the buffalo over other Army pat bags?...Bex
Hi Bex, Had the Buffalo around 25 years - used to use the fleece inner inside an issue down bag - warm as toast so bulky and heavy! Don't know what the current issue bags are (I left in '93), think they're the Snugpak Softy range - wouldn't mind trying one. The Buffalo is bomb-proof - wear your boots inside, get home and chuck it in the washing machine, dries quickly too. It's not as warm in winter on the hill - need a down jacket, and bivi bag, but does the job. I only do 2/3 season stuff now, and the single outer bag is adequate for that. Cheers!
Thanks for your responce. 3 or 4 season bags I use the US MMS, also very bulk and heavy, that Buffalo looks amazing, goin to watch that vid all over again right now, many thanx...Bex
Cheers Bex, thanks for the sub!
Hi Rob, i love your channel. I am Wild camping novice but have been collecting gear for their past year with he aim to start exploring and enjoying technology free weekends in the mountains starting this Spring. I am local to the beacons being from Cardiff so i was wondering if you would share a route or two that can get me started. RegardsHolley_uk2@yahoo.co.uk
Hi Rhys, many thanks, I tend to stick to the central beacons, in the 'horseshoe'. I often park at Upper Neaudd reservoir and walk up the Roman Rd - there's a few cars parked up overnight, it's too off the beaten track for opportunist thieves I think. I avoid the A470 Storey Arms and Pont a Daf car parks - too many tourists and day trippers. I camp on the hill or there's also a small wood down where the old reservoir was, with stream running through - good t wake up to Peny Fan and co. looming above in the morning. I've been over the Western Beacons a couple of times, Llyn y Fan Fawr I think is the best lake, especially y for an overnight - quite remote, only one car park on the road, but again, quite out of the way, so should be a bit safer. All the best Rhys, I envy you being so close - I'm in Warwick so a couple of hours away.
Just landed on your channel , great vid and gave you a sub 👍🏻
+Border Rambler Many thanks!
Great Rob......stumbled across your "real" channel !!....and someone that has taken the time or knows how to pronounce pen y fan......!!!!..no I'm not Welsh!!!! Keep up the good work Mo Wilts
Mo Hartley Many thanks! Diolch! More coming this year once the weather improves!
Water resistant?
#royi klein Nope! designed to drain quickly though. I only ever use them for OCR events, which is mostly water...and mud...and more water... Never feel as though there is water slopping around, no chafing and still comfortable after 10km.
Why don't you do another video with the sleeping bag packed up so the viewers can get a better idea of how bulky it is to tote around?
I'm on it!
