Hello friends and welcome to my channel. I'm a firearms enthusiast who participates in the shooting sports. USPSA-IDPA and STEEL CHALLENGE. My goal is to give back to the gun community and share my experiences.

My first video staring my J-Frame 442. Little of this and little of that.
You really handle the 357 well in these feather weight! Never seen this good control. Makes sense if you only have 5 they should pack a punch! My only concern would be the flash and blast of that beast! Some people reported hearing loss after they used a 357 snub in self defense. Buffalo Bore has a low flash short barrel load in 357.
Those moves could use some work. Especially at CONTACT distances as shown. Reminder, police carried .38SPL for a very long time...with cast lead bullets.

THE ROUND THAT DOES THE MOST DAMAGE IS A 38 SPECIAL WADECUTTER, IT IS A TARGET ROUND, 148 GRAINS AND IT IS ILLEGAL TO CARRY IT IN YOUR GUN....THIS ROUND IS A ONE SHOT KILL.....IT IS KNOWN AS A DUMDUM ROUND.....I LOADED MY AMMO AND LOADED THE WADECUTTER IN THE SHELL CASING BACKWARDS, IT JUST KEPT ON TUMBLING. WHEN FIRED.......

There are alternative reload options that you might want to compare your times on. The one I started using was to use my strong arm to use the speed loader or strips and my support hand to hold the cylinder open and down. This worked especially well for the strips in that my right hand was able to peel off rounds. Just a thought.

I carry a Taurus 856 +p revolver off duty and keep it loaded with soft cast buffalo bore lswchp rounds. Couple of speed loaders in an inconspicuous belt pouch and im ready for most situations. I get 350 ft lbs out of my gun with each shot. Moderate penetration with every bit of energy dumped into the suspect and with less recoil than a .357 means i get close to the power of a .357 with manageable recoil and faster follow up shots. The .38 special truly is a special round because .357 requires a heavy steal gun to manage the recoil since revolvers dont have a recoil spring/guide rod. But the .38 which was originally a black powder round can now be filled with more modern powder and the modern .38 pistols can be manufactured to handle it.

You are more effective with the 442. In my opinion you have to absolutely change your reload tecnique which is bad: very slow and full of mistakes. You better switch to Jerry Miculek tecnique, using the the weak hand and gravity force to eject the spent cases and the strong hand to reload the cylinder using the speed loader.

Watching him reload it makes me think of Jerry Miculek who did a cylinder dump, reloaded, and did another cylinder dump in under 3 seconds. Uhm... I think of Jerry Miculek as contrast. No offense.

Drink a shot every time there’s a euphemism…
Try putting your reloads in your right front pocket, use your left thumb to press the ejector, remembering gravity is your friend point the gun down to reload and when you get them in the gun just shut the cylinder, the loader will fall out of the way. Nice shooting out there! These guns aren’t easy to shoot well

I love the 442. I have carried a 442 as daily for past 3 years now. Changed my grips to s&w diamond checkered wood.

What holster are you using? I carry a sp 101 3" barrel and would like appendix carry.
I am using a DeSantis Gunhide Flex-Tuk. Its' leather with a plastic clip. It's quite comfortable. I did trim the opening to help keep the leather near the beltline.
I had a 340pd in .357mag that i bought for backpacking but i sold it because the recoil was just too rediculous. Ended up getting a glock 27 and putting a 357sig barrel in it. Much friendlier on the hand. Haha

I agree, you can use the M69 as a concealed carry gun, and I know people who do carry it. An inside the waistband holster would help in concealment. It is a great shooting but expensive gun; a dollar a round.

Ultralight semiautomatics tend to have reliability issues and garbage sights. Great choices in situations where weight is a primary concern.

What might be a good video; only use one carry ammo for a test, like the SIG 125 JHP. Shoot both the .38+P and the .357 Magnum against each other at that near/far scenario and see which does better for YOU. What are you gaining with .357 Magnum if you have a couple 12-yard missses? With practice you can probably get pretty close between the two pistols/cartridges.

@@noblerabbit1775 I'm limited to only three guns on my CCW, so I have to make the choices count. A couple times I've shot two guns against each other to see which model I shoot the best. Good luck.

What holster are you using?
Hello sir. I am using the DeSantis Flex-Tuk. I cutaway a few areas to open up the top. It's crazy comfortable and has kept me from ordering a kydex holster for the j-frame.
I think speed strips arena faster reload than the speed loader. Just my opinion
Do you think or do you know? Asking for real because i recently have started carrying a .38 and use speed strips from convenience sake. Id be interested in how much faster someone could be. Ive never tried traditional speedloaders before.

I have a 442 with 2008 DC v Heller ⚖ Right to Keep and Bear Arms. It was a special edition from S&W and SAF for the Heller decision. Enjoyed watching had to hit sub👍👍

Appreciate the Video, I have a tons of Revolver Content upcoming Including Retro Revolver Point Shooting, ammo selection in .38 and .357 coming etc. The belief any none LE will have time to reload a Revo in a gunfight and use it is hilarious (though you may need to to cover yourself when managing down bad guy, waiting for police, making sure his gang friends don't show back up etc.). In those light .357 snubs one may want to carefully align cylinder 3 .38+p rounds and last two Medium power Magnums like 125 Golden Saber or Critical Defense.
i like 340pd.
I have the no lock342pd absolutely love it, it is the lighter 38 special version of the 340pd. I carry with 38+p, ive shot thousands of rounds through it and practice makes it accurate i can hit 10" plates with it at 50yards.

I am a Pachmayr guy. I bought a used M642 .38+P that had Houge Batam grips on it. It was too much gun for the prior owner. I am an experienced pistol shooter and have a lot of time on a SW M37Airweight, but the 642 was brutal! I put Pachmyar Compacs on it (which I have on the M37) and now I shoot and carry it. You loose a little in concealability, but you can a lot in shootability.

Those 340pd revolvers are just plain nasty to shoot. I have the 342pd which is discontinued, but it is the 38spl version of that revolver. I’ve owned it over 20 years, and it has been carried a lot. But even in 38+p it’s not fun to shoot.

Buy the 340 M&P with no internal lock. It's recommended by gun legend Massad Ayoob for a reason.

@@cobraman502 I use to carry the 340 M&P in my right side pocket (in a holster) and a Ruger LCR 357 in left side pocket lol. Now I just carry one gun though.
@@BigDaddySwingingMeat I’m using remora and it is the most comfortable and stays in place very well. I do use a kydex pocket holster on occasion.
I would not buy either one of those guns because they are a pain in the hand to shoot. The 340pd is like 12 ounces and the 442 is 14.5 ounces empty. Nothing to absorb recoil which results in them being sold or traded off for new shooters. Stainless steel versions like the 640 in stainless steel that weighs 22 ounces is way more comfortable to shoot. As is the Taurus 605 stainless steel that’s 24 ounces.

Your not spending $1000 dollars on an 11oz revolver for comfortable shooting, your buying it so you can carry it comfortably all the time for self defense, and will most likely never have to shoot it through your entire life🤞

That's because his technique was not ideal. If you practice regularly with a good speedloader you can indeed reload about as fast as someone with a semi auto magazine. I've competed with guys at the range and I was able to beat some guys with semi autos and only came in a split second behind the fastest ones.
I absolutely hate air weight revolvers, the sting your hand to shot them weather your male or female. I have a stainless steel 686 6 shot 357 magnum 4 inch and a Taurus 605 stainless 357 magnum 5 shot. The extra weight of both revolvers make them a pleasure to shot with no discomfort.
Funny, I hate weight and love the bite of .357. Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee. Thank you for your insight.
#1 must be spicey to say the least. I wear a 66 owb & revolvers are easier to conceal in any position or holster. They have more organic shape.just easier.

I split the difference between a 442 and a 340PD by going with an M&P340. It has the steel cylinder which does bring the weight up a bit. But it also allows shooting 110gr bullets that would start leading to erosion on the Ti cylinder. It's a bit squishy, but the Hogue Tamer grip made for the Centennial/Bodyguard S&W pistols earns its name. It does cut into concealment a bit. But for my hand, it improves the reach to the trigger and takes the sting out.
Does any other weight bullets cause this erosion?
@@anonymousf454 So far as I'm aware, you should be good for anything over 120gr. Lighter bullets typically use more propellant, so there's more flame. S&Ws scandium frame guns have a flame guard on the top strap just over the forcing cone. The titanium cylinders have a protective coating as well, but it is not impervious.
@@Fudmottin Is the Yoke/Crane scandium/aluminum as well on these things? If so, Ibwas wondering if those parts right around the cylinder take any abuse?....I guess I could say the sliver of frame around the barrel too, other than that little top shield of course...on my model 60, all of that is blacked with carbon deposit after firing. Maybe its different for those parts though because of the way the gasses are directed when a bullet is fired. Idk....I would be ok with heavier bullets, but would be kind of pissed if my 1k plus gun started deteriorating after a few hundred rounds. The cylinder I could live with....or even swap out for the steel cylinder. If it was the frame I would not be happy.
@@anonymousf454 I tried out using a magnet on the crane. It appears to be an alloy part. As far as the barrel goes, it's a stainless steel sleeve inside the alloy shroud. I mostly just shoot specials out of my 340. So it should last just as well as a 442 in that respect. For defense loads, I'm looking at lighter 357 Magnum or heavier specials where I can have good energy levels without excessive blast and recoil. The M&P340 weighs much closer to a 442 than to a 340PD. Clearly there is a big weight difference between the titanium cylinder and steel cylinder. It's just cut for magnum length cases rather than special length cases. A straight up all steel model 60 probably will last longer with hot loads. Also you can get a bit of extra barrel length. The model 60 is available in a 3" barrel version with adjustable rear sight and pinned in front. SKU: 162430. I would be inclined to look at either of the 640 or 640 Pro Series Performance Center. The latter is a bit of a price hike. But it has a dove tailed rear sight. Both have 2.13" barrels. Both seem good as pocket pistols. Being all steel makes them heavier. But I expect they can outlast an alloy model.
I was really thinking about going with the M&P340, but I planned on just shooting .38 through it anyway so the only advantages it would offer me over a 442 would be slightly lighter weight and a front night sight. That alone wasn't worth the extra $400 to me so I went with the 442. Carry it everyday with Underwood 150 gr wadcutters and a speedstrip of 100 gr Xtreme Defenders.
38 Special not great ? Most defensive encounters are within 10 feet and a 642 like mine loaded with Hornady 110 gr +P's will ruin some mutt's day no problem. I'm especially fond of my 3" Taurus 856 Defender. A J Frame size revolver with 6 shots, night sights and that 3" barrel really up's the ante in velocity. I also have a 3" Ruger GP100 357 for woods carry and even with the twice the weight it can still be a handful with full power 357, recovery is terrible and flash and slipping in my hand is a problem and I'm a 6'2" and 270 lb construction worker. Imagine if you're a 125 lb woman.
38 HBWC loads are nothing to sneeze at and Buffalo Bore makes a nice standard pressure 158gr soft LSWCHP that equals the original+P FBI load. Both are consistent, reliable, and controllable performers.😇

I carried a 642 for the first 2 years of my ccw, moved to a 340 PD and I couldn’t be happier, I think it’s a marvel of a firearm as far as innovation and materials. I recommend the Speer Gold dot 135 grain short barrel .357 magnum load. It’s more of a .38 +p+. Still “Spicey” but not as spicy. Great vid. That fireball was awesome!!!

I’ve owned the no-lock 340PD for over 10 yrs but keep it loaded w/+P. Shooting .357 out of this light gun feels like catching a 90 MPH fastball w/o a glove. Also, magnum casings tend to swell in the chambers making them difficult & slow when trying to reload. I was taught to cross both thumbs across the backstrap of a J Frame for better recoil control.

I’ve been carrying a J Frame since 1968 & in 1974 used my issued Colt Detective Special (about the same size as a J Frame) in a gunfight w/three armed robbery suspects, reloading w/a speedloader under fire.

To Slow On The RELOAD's, With My G26 Gen 5, I Have 15rds Of 9mm HP's Ready To Go + 1 Back Up Mag, So 31rds Total...
And if you're hand to hand, you can't press the barrel in to the bad guy. For that matter, a hand in the slide does a lot more than trying to stop a revolver cylinder. Fwiw - devil's advocate and all that. Use what you want
Do you always carry with a G17 mag loaded in the G26? I see your point, I carry the 340PD because of weight and footprint. You will beat me in capacity but not in carry-ability.

I used to own a 340PD and used it as my carry gun. I would load 4 38's with the final round a 357. I loved that gun, but sadly times were tough and i had to sell it

Same! I have seen two different ones fail but SwampFox replaced without question.
No one shoots 357 magnums in a J-frame size revolver and it does not hurt like hell. Both of those light weight guns are 38 special/38 special plus P only guns in my opinion even when they are 357 rated. I Have a stainless steel 640 that's 22 ounces and a Taurus 605 in stainless steel that's 24 ounces. Both are a pleasure to shoot 38 special/plus p, if I had to shoot 357 magnum it would not hurt as much because of their stainless steel weight.

Yeah, okay guy. I’ve owned and carried j-frames in .38 spl and .357 magnum. My current j-frame is an M&P340. I shoot it a lot and train with both .38s and .357 mag. I carry Hornady critical defense 125 gr .357 Magnum in that revolver. These guns are not difficult to handle with proper grip technique. However, the technique does require grip strength. If you don’t have adequate grip strength, you won’t handle a .357 j-frame well. I’m sick of hearing people say “nObODy CarRies .357s iN a j-FRaMe!” It’s ridiculous and just wrong.
Never say "nobody". I do. (And I also carry the 340pd) 😉
Great guns to carry, my only gripe about my J frames is the finish, it just falls off.

@@jasonashley4579 the 442 is the black scandium correct? We're there any factors in the way they were carried that you believe affected the ware over the other?
@@anonymousf454 not really, carry it in a leather holster and use ballistol to clean them, Smith and Wesson just uses a really cheap finish on their airweights.
