Excellent production. Have learned so much. I was 14 when the GCR through trains finished and only managed to sneak up to Victoria Station a few times from Leicester. I recall a constant flow of coal empties at the eastern platform hauled by ex LNER locos. The drivers always told me they were going to Colwick which I thought was just a 'shed'! Sadly I never got to know the extensive network around Nottinham and the rich variety of locos to be spotted. Strange how you can mourn the loss of somthing you never really knew! Thank you so much!

Thank you David, fascinating video. I grew up in the 60s and 70s in two houses (on Hereford Rd and Sandfield Rd) which both backed on to the "Arno Vale" section of the line between Daybrook and the Mapperley tunnel. As a boy I used to imagine what it must have been like to see trains running along those cuttings. There are two pictures in your video which are taken on this stretch of the line and they're the first such pictures I've ever seen - wonderful!

Excellent but while Colwick shed provided locos for freight haulage (predominantly coal) it also had an important role in the provision of locos for passenger trains. Local passenger services between Grantham and Derby and excusion traffic to the East Coast in Summer months. I recall going from Nottingham Victoria to Leeds on an excursion hauled by a Colwick ex works B1

16:15 the old fuel storage yard is in use still but only as a storage facility for the track and overhead line inspection train which consist of 2 power cars and ex virgin east coast mk3 stock plus few others thrown in to make the rake

The AFS formed part of Civil Defence after WWII and Bikini units were one answer to major disruption to, or absence of, infrastructure water supplies. The carrier vehicle could crane 3 raft units diirectly into the water from a bridge or embankment. A floating water extraction unit is unaffected by tide or changes in water level, allowing the use of tidal rivers. Each raft carried 3 'Lightweight' pumps and one of these was used for mobility. Once in position all three 500gpm pumps could be used to pump water ashore, usually at the start of a high-volume water relay using 'Green Godess' fire engines capable of pumping a 6inch hose supply straight through. The bikini units formed part of a Civil Defence, military-style 'fire column' including hose-layers, pipe bridge units, Green Godess fire pumps and other support vehicles, and could provide high volumes of water for fire-fighting or as a replacment civil water supply.

It is great to see these old girls going through their paces, though in the old days and right up to the late 70s fire fighting drills were done speedily, I know these are just play acting and nor professionals, but neither were the wartime AFS these were civilians who took on the role of firemen in their home times outside their daily work. I did a short spell with West Mids fire brigade in 1975 all practice drills were done at the double and that was with the wheeled escape being removed from the pump and run out and sited against the building, laying out hose with the branch man having the nozzle stuffed in his belt laying the last 50ft of hose attaching the branch and calling for water on, literally the time from alighting the pump to water on was the time it took to lay 2 or 3 hose lengths attaching branch calling for water and putting water down on target, 6 men per pump each with their pre arranged task the second the appliance comes to a stop on scene

Nice to see the old pump doing something, I have one of these but unfortunately it has had oil failure to one of the bearings and its going to cost too much to fix,

Also, your comments about checking the fire hydrants are a little unkind. The Market Square was extensively refurbished recently - I expected the hydrants to be new and clean, rather than jammed up with builders rubble. And unfortunately, at a fire, the Fire Brigades don't have the chance to check them out before going to fight the fire!

OK, can we leave the anger and bitterness out of this. Vonpork and Bootboys, would you care to say which 1940s re-enactment group you belong to? I appreciate that you have gone to a lot of effort to get things right - we intend to get there as well. But are you saying that because we have not got there yet, we should have turned down the opportunity to help Nottm commemorate the 70th anniversary, and turned down the request from a charity for help? And we can only learn by trying.

@bootboysgoonforever The comments on this fund-raising (e.g. "All you have done is to de-value the effort of those who have taken the time and effort to sorce the right uniforms ....") were hostile and betrayed a staggering level of narcisissm. The effort was expended to raise money for a memorial: not to impress you. As to your tastes, nobody here could be less interested; your type are generally remembered for their loutish intimidating ways, and you are doing nothing to dispell that image.

@DRDJWalker lets get back to the video please could i ask who filmed it ? as they are not that impressed with whats happening talking about going back to BASICS ? also just for future reference before you do any drills/displays could i ask you run through them and check that all equipment works as lets face its all very old. this includes hydrants and pumps. I see you have seen our 1970s video and glad you found fireman sam because fireman sam has done his homework unlike you ya naughty boys

The event was organised at short notice, and assisted by some newcomers to the group, whilst 3 of the most experienced regulars were unavailable on the day. We were short of wet legs - a situation now resolved. Larger tunics are being sourced, but for the larger newcomers, it was greatcoats or nothing. And just 10 days before the event, two of the three vehicles were off the road with mechanical troubles. Sorry I could not do the impossible. As it was, we raised over £1,000 charity.

The shortcomings you mention did not prevent a good deal of money being raised by a group of amateurs with no formal fire-service training who - despite not wearing the "right" boots etc - did nonetheless manage to demonstrate roughly how the 1940's vehicles and equipment worked. But as you imply, some people are always going to bitch and nit-pick. Perhaps on the 80th anniversary, you will show how it should be done.

Sorry for the bitch but nobody is wearing the right uniform , modern boots, jeans ,great coats???. Gas masks should be worn at the alert . I know its hard to find large tunics.We found a few at Derby and black leggings, Cyril had a load of original boots.
