David Prisant
“The risk is low, the reward is huge.”
After years of enjoying what he jokingly refers to as his 4 food groups, David Prisant had a heart attack in 2011. When his doctor urged him to get serious about his weight, he reached out to Dr. Chris Smith at Albany Surgical about the Orbera® weight loss balloon. David lost over 25% of his weight, stopped needing so many prescription drugs and as he says: “When I look in the mirror…now I see David, and I like it.”

Sadly I know someone who has taken omeprazole for 30 years, she has recently attempted to come off them to no avail it is virtually impossible. She is convinced it has caused her health problems, knee arthritis she has no cartiledge in her knee, her legs do not work properly, has fatty liver, gallstones as well. She has tried coming off them gradually does not work as acid rebound is so severe within minutes she can be in terrible pain. PPI's were designed for short term but doctors prescribe them like sweets. If anyone complains of acid reflux these tablets are what are given to take permanently. As usual doctors treat symptoms not the cause. I did say to a dr if there is a flood in your house yes you can stop water coming into your home but that has not sorted the cause of the flood. I have heard it is low stomach acid that causes acid reflux not too much. Nothing seems to change with doctors.

I have been on Prilosec for almost 10 years for GERD. I know people who have been on it for like 20 years . My new Dr just put me on Voquezna , similar to a ppi but it's a H2 PCAB potassium competitive acid blocker. My plan is to take it for a month, maybe up to 3 months , then get on zantac for a few months and hopefully be off meds . I tried to get off it two years ago. Went from 20 mg 2x a day to once a day for almost three months . Then once every other day for almost a month. I was getting acid surges at night, it always is lower and a empty stomach feeling with severe nausea. My now wife was worried because I was so sick, so I just got back on them because I don't want the side effects but I really don't want esophageal cancer! Went to Dr. today and decided to stay with Prilosec bc the Voquezna shuts off more acid production.. looks like I'll ween off Prilosec again and try to stay off this for good.

Sorry, I have to call BS! And I’m only doing so because yes, I have made the rounds between pulmonary, ENT, G.I., allergy and even dermatology. I’ve been told that since my hiatal hernia that is in fact, causing reflux is only one centimeter Hillgrade three classification that my hernia is too small to be causing significant problems so essentially I’m being forced onto H2 or PPI‘s. I’ve been told the cause is allergies. I’m 45 years old and I’ve been a semipro athlete for the last 20 years outside every day. And although I seem to have an extensive allergy profile, according to blood test results, I have had zero issues and my entire adult life with allergies. Then suddenly in 2023 everything changed. I have developed chronic sinusitis shortness of breath and basically check all of the boxes for LPR. I did the bravo test that indicates reflux. I attempted the manometry test but could not finish the test because of the invasive nature of the test tube. ENT wants to do fess next month. But I am still hesitant to do that because I do not believe my chronic sinusitis is being caused by allergies or structural issues in the nose. My hiatus hernia was diagnosed early in 2023 around the same time all of this changed. Of course it is possible the hernia predated the diagnosis, but not one symptom predated the diagnosis, not one! Well, to be clear, they symptoms began less than two months prior to the appointment where the upper endoscopy was performed. I discussed this with pulmonology as well, and the doctor tells me I have asthma. I asked the doctor about the presence of pepsin and the long tissue or the upper respiratory tract and his response was, pepsin is not only made in the stomach, but it is also made in the lung tissue. Apologies, I’m not exactly sure where he was implying. Pepin is made in the upper respiratory tract, but he did indicate that Pepin is not just made in the stomach. So, I conducted a search of the scientific literature and cannot find a single article to support his claim. I ask him if he could show me the research and he said he could not do that because he learned this at a recent conference and his notes were at home. Interestingly, the day after my manometry test, I had a return of shortness of breath that was quite severe, and when I ask the G.I. Doctor Who referred me to the manometry test, she said that was likely due to a buildup of saliva. I believe I read some scientific literature that reveals at times during manometry when the test tube is removed or possibly also when it is inserted stomach contents can escape into the esophagus. The G.I. doctor mentioned nothing about that. So far, over the last 1.5 years I have had two G.I. doctors describe my hernia as too small to be causing all of the upper respiratory problems so I believe I have still yet to get good clarification on exactly how serious is a one centimeter Hillgrade three hernia. The doctor in this video presents all sunshine and roses, but it seems to me he’s doing so because he’s trying to sell a product. I trust not one of you! FYI, I’m using voice dictation and no need to go back incorrect for grammar or any errors in my message here.. lastly because I am not sure if this is important but to start the year off in 2023 I had the most severe case of the flu. I believe I’ve ever had in my life and I had a vicious cough during that time. I believe I read that severe cough can potentially cause a hiatus hernia. Additionally, around that same time I begin doing ruck marches with about 60 pounds on my back so that is another possibility as to the cause of the hernia.. I would just be careful with these doctors people! Definitely do your homework. Ask them questions although I know they hate when patients ask questions but nonetheless ask them questions! Conduct your own research of the scientific literature to learn as much as you can about your particular ailment. Also, do not let them gaslight you!

I don't have any serious 'gerd' problems but came up positive for an at home color-guard test and have another colonoscopy/endoscopy scheduled for 5/21/24. I'm so disappointed with the Drs never mentioned my issues of malabsortion from this medication. Gone for iv transfusion for severly low iron. 25 years on this med . I had stopped completly taking the med and don't advise as acids are flooding up to your mouth non-stop . Do it slowly. It's been 2.5 months and still with issues with some days worse than others . I tried Pepsid for 5 weeks but it caused issues with kidney and bladder so I went back to nexium but lowered from 40 to 20mg . Hes right your muscle becomes weak and doesn't open and close properly. What a battle to get off this med. I totally lost faith in the drug companies.

I’ve been prescribed a PPI for 14 years! Only recently did I learn they’re for short term use. I’ve tried so many times to get off them by weaning down and every time it fails. And it was likely a weak LES from pregnancy that caused the GERD. And that’s fixable. There’s no reason for me to be on these meds. But nobody ever decided to figure out the cause of the GERD. I’m so sick from these meds. IBS, SIBO, malabsorption, iron deficiency, etc.

I am with you sane here . Actually today I read a medical journals from two doctors and these damn PPI’s actually weaken, the LES the PPI remove the acid out of your stomach. You need that acid and acid in your stomach to fight off infections and a whole host of other things. I don’t know how I’m gonna do, but I’m gonna try to wean myself off I have an endoscopic this Monday, January 15, 2024. Stay informed. Its a billion $$ dollar industry.
