📚 PhD in Early Modern English literature
🖊️ Writing a novel
🖊️ Writing a novel
To quit or not to quit a PhD? Applications, funding, research, & more in grad school.
In 2018, Hyeree (@eggietable) and I started in the same cohort of a continuous MA-PhD program in English literature. Now, seven years later, we sit down to talk about what led us to pursue the PhD, our experiences in grad school including what we researched and how we made a living, and why ultimately she dropped out of the program while I stayed through to the end.

Cannibalism in Early Modern English Drama: a Brief Overview
Просмотров 84 тыс.Месяц назад
I didn't expect that getting my PhD would result in my reading a lot of literature and scholarship about cannibalism in 16th and 17th century English literature, but somehow, that is what happened. And every time I mention it, people want to know more. So here it is: an introductory exploration of how cannibalism appears in a dozen or so early modern English plays, and how to understand literar...
Writing a novel | hitting a new record word count🥂 📈

I closed out the month of November by hitting a new personal record word count in my WIP, exceeding the length of the novel first draft I wrote this time last year! Word count isn’t everything and there’s a lot of work still ahead of me, but I’m a big believer in celebrating every milestone in a long writing project like this. What milestones have you hit recently in your writing project, wheth...

What do you do when you finish one intense writing project? You immediately jump into ANOTHER intense writing project! My two biggest goals for 2024 were to successfully defend my dissertation, and to write a full first draft of a romance novel. Now that I’ve accomplished that first one, it’s time to tackle the second! At some point I will make some videos reflecting on the PhD and talking in m...
Defending my doctoral dissertation

Here's a vlog of my final week of work leading up to the dissertation defense. And I feel no need to build up suspense - in the end, I passed! I'll make more retrospective videos at some point talking about the dissertation process and PhD as a whole, but as of right now, I have nothing smart or coherent to say... I'm just happy, and relieved, and about to spend my next few days sipping on spar...

Here’s a short vlog of a long day spent working on dissertation defense prep! My rapidly-approaching defense has me feeling nervous, excited, overwhelmed, and accomplished all at once, and I’m just trying to push through the final days as productively as possible so that I can end on a high note. PhD Vlog - Outlining a Dissertation Chapter
I don't know how many times I have rewatched this video, especially whenever I am tempted to rush into setting big goals of writing or reading a lot. This idea of having a draft as a companion, of having something simmering on a stove whilst chipping away on a big project, is just comforting and healing and validates all my beliefs that the best work comes from giving yourself and your thoughts time to ruminate.
My grandmother gave me her personal copy of Jane Eyre shortly before she died. She said it was her favorite novel. But I never had the opportunity to really discuss it in depth with her before she passed. Based on the pieces of her life that I know from what family members have told me, I can make guesses about what she liked so much about Jane. It’s nice to hear about what others enjoy and take from the book. Thank you for the great video!
Please please please make more videos like this
Congrats! What an accomplishment. I'm headed down the same path myself.
How’d you go about printing your dissertation?
I printed it out at home, and then brought it to my local office supply shop's print center, and they spiral bound it for just about $5 !
@ thank you!
i love this SO much its so thought provoking
Thank you for this conversation!! Did you have to take the GRE for your program? It seems like there are so many humanities programs that don't require it, I'm not sure whether to look into taking it
I did take the GRE, and I even took the GRE Lit subject test, but definitely not all of my programs asked for it! I think enough of the schools I was interested in did require it to make it seem worth it to me to take.
Learning the history behind the making of classic books makes me enjoy them even more.
so, so appreciated❤
I never do not nor even want to attempt a PhD. It goes on for too many years and the thesis is too focused. I had enough difficulty with the Master's degree where I struggled with writing my essays, EMA, and dissertation because the questions were rather complicated, vague, complex, and daunting. I felt like dropping out of my Master's degree, but I pulled through and I completed it and graduated with it. The Master's degree is one of the most difficult which I ever down in my school life. I did not receive a high mark at all in the two years that I did my Master's degree. I was just lucky just to pass.
sending this video to all my weirdo friends because its awesome. your hair is gorgeous by the way
Clicking on this video might have been the best decision I made today! I loved it, and watched it while eating bread and milk lol, but it is absolutely fantastic, thank you so much for sharing all of this with us.
Titus Andronicus changed my brain chemistry as a teenager lmao
i feel like you would love hannibal nbc
this was intellectual epiphany
Thank you so much for this video! I’m a humanities junior and I’ve been seriously considering going to grad school. Such a helpful conversation this was. Thank you!❤
Talking about cannibalism is absolutely iconic! ☆ Everything you said is very well put, too. Smacking that subscribe button asap!
loved this video
Thank you for this video! I’m just a semester in to my first year of college and don’t have that many examples of what pursuing an English degree could look like. Are there any things you would tell your undergraduate self or things you would’ve done differently knowing what you do now?
I would tell my undergrad self to talk more with professors! And my undergrad self probably wouldn't have listened, because she was very shy and anxious about things like that haha but professors are a great resource and, for the most part, are very happy when students reach out to talk about course materials. Any time you're writing a paper for a class, you can ask to meet with your prof to talk through your ideas; if there's a subject you're really passionate about, you could try to find a professor to work with you on an independent study; if you're curious about futures in English degrees, you can even ask to meet with a professor to talk about that.
"I don't like business, I like books!" Story of my life 😂 Thank you both so much for this discussion - your perspectives were great to listen to.
:)
This was a fabulous conversation!. A MA in English Literature can be of great value outside of academia. . I believe that one should pursue many career paths, because, as was said, life is both long and short.
Loved this convo so much, thank you for sharing!! Just starting my Masters part time for the pursuit of academia and am looking ahead one day to possibly pursuing a PhD, this is so helpful and interesting
I am very glad none of Aphra Behn's plays showed up in this video.
Aphra Behn is so fascinating! Oroonoko does actually feature into one of the chapter's in the Gitanjali Shahani book I mentioned towards the end, not because of literal cannibalism, but in connection with the consumption of tobacco. Very interesting stuff.
Would you mind saying why you think the other universities rejected your application?
I’m really not sure, it could be any number of things! Maybe there was a stronger applicant who wanted to specialize in Early Modern English lit and they couldn’t take on more grad students in that time period, or maybe those programs weren’t interested in my declared research focus of food studies - or maybe they just simply didn’t like my statement of purpose or didn’t think my GRE scores were good enough. I wish you got feedback on applications so you could know what the strengths and weaknesses were, but unfortunately, it’s all guesswork.
Is dropping out for free masters unethical ?
I don't believe so, no - and for what it's worth, I've never heard a professor or grad student or anyone else in academia suggest so! It's not like it's just given to you for free, after all, since you work for the university in exchange for a tuition waiver. In my experience, for example: I taught university courses for two years while completing my MA, and then had the choice to complete the internal reapplication to pass to the PhD stage. If I'd chosen to master out and not apply to the PhD stage, I would just be declining to continue in this job. No one would have been taken advantage of!
I would not be so quick to assume it is not unethical to drop out, but I would need more information about how attrition rates affect your particular program: what efforts faculty members have to make to maintain lines (i.e., the ability to keep offering the same number of students a place in the program every year, or every admissions cycle), the expectations placed on the director of admissions and the consequences student attrition has for them, if any, the effect attrition rates have on general funding for your department and master’s program, among other factors. I don’t say this to discourage you from leaving your program, but to invite you to continue to look into your situation before making a decision. There are many legitimate reasons for exiting a graduate program, and I hope you make a decision that’s good for you and your wellbeing.
this is SO good, now i kind of want a degree in english
currently writing on blood in chinese literature and the concept of consuming human blood as a ritualistic and medicinal element is startingly common, for example in Medicine by Lu Xun. I'm focusing on blood-selling, and how it is ultimately a power imbalance between the person selling themselves and their "legacy/vitality" and who draws and buys it, who actually ends up controlling and owning the seller while putting them onto the illusion they are empowering themselves through an easy way of earning money (reference: the blood of china by Pierre Haski, Chronicle of a Blood Merchant by Yu Hua)
hello fellow medievalists/early modernists!! i’m so glad i came across this vid, i’m currently finishing up an MA in medieval studies with plans for a loooong break before going back for a phd (if i ever go back at all) and have been feeling a lot of guilt about it. so thank you both for making this video and providing some much needed perspective <3
Congrats on nearing the end of your MA, that's awesome! I hope you really enjoy your break from academia, I'm sure you will.
I could watch a thousand videos like this; absolutely fascinating examples, well-researched, well-analyzed, perfectly succinct and poignant especially to today’s views of capitalism and colonialism. Genius
I will believe that this is what Eat Your Young by Hozier is about

@GlutenbergBible 😍
THANKS FOR THIS! ❤
Thanks for watching! ☺️
Thank you so much for this video. I am also a recipient of a Fellowship for a set course of study but I dropped this study to switch into a different program at my university because I realized that the doors that my previous program would have opened for me were not the doors that I wanted. Though I am happy to have switched to my new program, I do feel this intense fear that maybe I am a failure for switching to a "passion" program, that maybe I am just not intelligent enough to pursue a more academically/intellctually rigorous program. Hearing you both discuss grad school as a "career change" rather than as a reflection of one's intellectual/motivational spirit is so helpful in easing my anxieties. It is okay to change careers and paths--especially since I am in my early twenties! Thank you once again for this insightful conversation. <3
I'm so glad this video resonated with you! Those kinds of fears and insecurities we run into in grad school are so pervasive and hard to shake. But congrats on making a choice that's best for you, that's awesome - and I think it's a very intelligent thing to pursue the path that you personally want rather than just what is generally considered to be more prestigious or correct. Good luck with the rest of your program!
This is seriously such an important video; I'm not even being dramatic. Being in the last semester of my MA program, I cannot tell you how much I WISH I had listened to such a conversation years ago when I started it all. and even today, it means so much to hear two brilliant people reminding us not to be afraid to dream again, to start over, and to quit if things do not turn out as we might've imagined. Our lives and choices ultimately belong to the "us" we are today, not necessarily to the "us" who made them several years ago. + the world and its opportunities are too vast for us to reduce it all to just a couple of options. so really, thank you for this video <3
😢❤
Thanks for the video. May I ask your advices for MA Literature students on deciding their thesis topic? I'm struggling to pick a work and period and find an approach.
I wish I had more specific or actionable advice here, but really my recommendation is just to talk to some of your professors! Think about the course papers you've written that were most satisfying and interesting, and sit down with those professors to talk about whether those papers could be the root of a thesis topic. They'll be able to give you specific advice about your work and your program, and talk you through the difficulty of pinning down an approach and subject.

YES! please make more videos like this! theyre so needed, its like a public lecture!
As someone who is preparing to apply to a phd program in the humanities and social sciences, this was super helpful. Thank you for being so thorough and sharing your journey
Well this is actually a good video
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience and work. You inspire me so much!!
amazing vid! i'm brazilian and the cannibalism - sex parallel made me think about how in Brazil sometimes when a man wants to call a woman "hot", "sexy" (or just say she has a nice body) they say she is "filé" which translates to "steak", "fillet", literally a piece of meat
You should check out Richard the Lionhearted (c. 1400s)! Richard I is an unabashed cannibal in it, and the son of a demon.
so, so, soooooo jealous omg!
i literally just met you and omg, i wanna be you you're an amazing person i hope i can be as good as you someday... love from Brazil :)
Thank you for this brief overview. I will use the info to ponder Catholicism / the act of eating the body of Christ .
