    Thank you so much for this! The vantage point was where I would have wanted to be. :) I was once fortunate enough to be seated backstage of Chicago, watching Danny Seraphine solo while Terry Kath and Peter Cetera were smoking some custom cigars that they had just rolled. As awesome as that was, I would have traded that experience to watch Simon perform his magic from where you were.

      You're so welcome! And what a cool story. I would have loved to have seen Chicago during the Terry years. Such an immense talent. Watching a show backstage is always an interesting experience. While it may not sound as great it's a bit more intimate and you get to watch the crowd enjoy the show. Speaking of which, I just added another video to my channel which was shot by our roadie from backstage as well as from the front of the club! It's an amateur tape so be prepared but still fun to watch. It's the one labeled Ronnie Montrose OH 1994 tape 2. ruclips.net/p/PL541956FB197F2E0F

    You are lucky! definitely the best jazz fusion band of the moment! These musicians are fantastically coupled at all times and almost perfect in playing their instruments. Otmaro's solo on the piano is heavenly, I've known him since 1986 when he was in our house in Caracas playing our piano, he has become a true master over these years after emigrating to the house of Jazz.🔈🔈🤔😉

I just do not believe that to call someone a great player he has to be better then everyone else. I judge players on their personal abilities. For example if we compared Garrabaldi to Tony Williams u could say he's not that "good" because he doesn't have the single strokes doesn't have the speed can't play Straight Ahead as well, but they're both great players because of what they do

But I did get to record and tour with a couple of notable artists, namely Ronnie Montrose and Mark Isham. But when I became aware of Simon was on Jeff Beck's There and Back. His playing blew my mind. But later I can now hear his influence from Billy Cobham. Still, he has his own style - flawless and dynamic. If you search you can find some videos on his sound recording techniques. Yes, Colin, it's astonishing that he completely changed his playing style by learning open playing. I believe he said he was influenced by Billy Cobham, much like many others who play this way. Very freeing if you can master it. And he clearly has. It's a fluidity in his playing that's beautifully executed.

      Hi Michelle, thanks for the great video, how cool to be slow close to such an incredible master, I recently stumbled upon Simons drumming videos, was a fan of Toto back in the day, but lost track as time went on. I enjoy the incredible tonal progression ( and amazing talent) of his drums and adds such color and depth to highlight his musician mates, he plays the drums like an instrument not just banging noise, so different than many other fine drummers. Sounds like you had an incredible drumming career, very impressive, I played for a few years as a teenager, even witnessed the legend of Buddy Rich several times, just mind blowing, too bad I didn’t appreciate what I was hearing but was very impressed. Now at a ripe ‘63, and a soon as I recover from shoulder surgery, I’m reliving my youth and picking up the drum sticks again and collecting vintage Ludwig red psychedelic drums the type I played on as a kid, I guess it’s never to late. Another fine drummer is Virgil Donati, I’m sure you’ve seen / heard his music, another over the top drummer….stay well and thanks for your contributions to the music world. I hope you bought the club owner a drink for seating you there ! :)

    • @michelegraybeal
      @michelegraybeal 2 года назад

      Interesting observation. But I can see why that would be an inclination. After all, before the drum set was the military snare drum. Maybe it's so ingrained in our culture to start a solo using the snare because of that. It's like a traditional jumping off point. The rest of the kit is more or less an extension of the musical vocabulary. Who knows for sure but it's always refreshing to hear a drum solo that starts unconventionally.
