We would need to produce the power infrastructure (from in-situ resources) on Itokawa first before moving Itokawa to a better orbit. At an industrial scale (US installed 6.8Gw of residential Solar in 2023) We are talking about a couple of years of thrust... That is reasonable for something which would be used for centuries. It would seem more likely (and something that he partially suggested) that people would just make a large factory + solar array on Itokawa proper, slowly constructing the actual cycler that would mass in the range of tens or hundreds of kilotons instead of the ~35 megatons of Itokawa. Probably even less for the first cycler from lack of need for more and desire to iron out kinks in the various processes. Interestingly, I notice the asteroid seems to have trace -- but fairly *significant* for a relatively small workforce -- amounts of several common elements required for fertilizers, though I sadly can't find any mention of nitrogen or even just any molecules with nitrogen. With that in mind, and since the asteroid is essentially almost more of a loose rock-pile... and since there's naturally a lot of experience processing and refining low grade ore on Earth... I wonder if the future of the asteroid itself is as one of the first early hubs of space expansion. Easy to reach from Earth, frequently near something people even care about to begin with (Mars, even though it seems pretty overrated compared to Venus or simply exploiting asteroids), by extent fairly "near" the rest of the asteroid belt in terms of DV, not *too* terribly "far" from earth in those terms either. Has the necessary elements for a lot of types of solar panels, decent mirrors, several types of batteries and useful industrial chemicals, and as noted several key fertilizers. In fact, if you wanted you could even ship in nitrogen in the form of ammonia ice from a bit further out in the system or some lucky finds) and essentially close the loop for fertilizers while still possibly being cheaper than shipping it en masse from earth even with something like Starship if it miraculously hits the projected launch costs.
(just to continue) Makes me so so so envision one of the first truly significant factories and mines that wouldn't just be on the moon, would serve to be relatively self-sufficient and even capable of limited population growth, and which would produce a series of smaller ships and cyclers before eventually being mostly shuttered as an ISRU facility but still leaving behind an excellent power plant + radiation shelter -- it may be quite the long lived settlement!

The number length in natural language thing in binary is a little overstated. Sure, if you tried to translate "a billion" into binary, then say it out loud it would be pretty cumbersome, but in a binary based natural language, the number 2^32 would presumably be a simple 1 to 3 syllable word, whereas in standard spoken English it's the 32 (if I counted right!!!) syllable monstrosity "four billion, two hundred and ninety four million, nine hundred and sixty seven thousand, two hundred and ninety six" Of course in practice I would be more likely to call it something like "about four point three billion" and speakers of a binary based natural language would presumably use similar strategies of approximating and where possible grouping things into units of integer power of 2 numbers of smaller items

Very cool! You can make the electrical contact force for all objects by setting the effective potential to distance to the power of 14. The contact forces effective potential decays really fast, but can get a sphere of impenetrability by setting it to that.

No fishing for cheap laughs like "lol there is a grammatical gender for the loss in faith in humanity after watching several bad conlang videos in a row". Everything is there for a reason, to reach a design goal, even if the goals might not apply for us mere mortals. The cursedness comes from the fact that everything makes perfect sense. Bravo.

I'm not at all convinced that a negative mass / positive mass pair moving at relativistic speeds would be catastrophic, in a positive mass only scenario, the fast particle needs to release energy to be slowed, in a negative mass only scenario, the fast moving particle would need to absorb energy to be slowed. To slow the pair, no energy needs to be released or absorbed, the only way to get a catastrophic result would be to separate the two so the positive mass particle is slowed relative to the negative mass particle. Whether that is possible takes a deeper dive than we have here, and I'd love to figure it out. I also don't think combining negative mass atoms will get you a black hole, I think it will get you a white hole. The net charge of the thing is still zero, and the net mass is highly negative. Any neutral charge particle or object will be pushed away gravitationally with such great acceleration that even light cannot enter, and because the force flips from attractive to repulsive, only negative mass particles on a collision course with sufficient velocity to overcome that attraction (that accelerates the negative mass away from the object) would be able to get in to combine. But that velocity is unachievable as long as relativity holds, meaning the only way to go beyond critical mass for such a white hole would be reverse-Hawking radiation.
So far I haven't seen any problem with negative mass other than it is "seems" absurd, and the more I learn about the math, the less absurd it seems.
