Is the glue hot?
Yes it needs to be warm, but not too hot as this ruins it and if you let it go cold it will turn into unusable jelly.
Thanks for this excellent video Bethany. Just one question, how many coats of primer do you apply to the board.
I do anywhere between 5 - 10 layers, it depends how smooth a surface you want, more layers are better if you have the time to build them up. 3 or 4 would be a minimum number, if you are just starting out or want some practice panels.
@@paintinganddrawingwithbymilam Thanks Bethany. Sorry I used the wrong term. What I meant was the sizing layer. Do you paint one sizing layer and then lots of gesso layers?
@@steveelliott9746 Yes one or two sizing layers then lots of gesso.
If you want to add a white border do you need to add masking tape on the inside of the gummed tape? Or did you peel off the gummed tape afterwards?
While it is possible to peel off the gummed tape using water it is not easy to do in my experience so I trim it off. I would use Frog tape or a low tack masking tape inside the gummed tape if I wanted a white border.
Excuse my curiousity, please, from which part of England are you coming from? You have such a lovely accent! By the way, I first leave my glue in water for 24 hours so that the granules can soak up the water. Only then do I heat it, but not above 60 degrees, otherwise the glue loses its binding power.
Thankyou, I am from Hampshire. I say at about 4:40 that I leave the granules to soak overnight, the longer they are left the better. Although depending on how processed the RSG you are using it might need longer or shorter to fully absorb the water, and yes slow melt on low heat 57 - 60c, definitely not over 70c.

Serendipity Art Hi Bethany, thank you for your video I found it very useful. I'm just about to invest in the items needed to stretch my paper. I have a question which I'm hoping you could help with. I need to use my light box to transfer an image in pencil onto the paper (an outline mostly) once the paper is stretched and fully dry could I cut it off, trace my image then stick with ordinary masking or Washi tape to my fresh painting board and paint without losing the effect of the paper having been stretched? I'd appreciate any advice. Answer Hi Thanks for your question sorry it got lost. For paper to be stretched it needs to stay taped to the board with gum strip for the entire painting process otherwise it is no longer stretched. You could try drawing your outline prior to stretching your paper, you will need to use a hard pencil so that the graphite does not run or smudge or alternatively a coloured pencil. I would do a test run to check that this will work for you before your main piece. Good luck
