First of all, a person should try to prevent such situations from happening by pre-planning the trip. Exhaust gases have a strong noticable smell and color in below cases: 1- when engine is not tuned well. 2- catalytic converter is damaged. 3- engine needs an overhaul. ... Except these cases exhaust gas from a vehicle doesn't have a smell, taste or color. Especially the properties of carbon monoxide include that it is a tasteless, colourless, odourless poisonous gas. If you feel that exhaust gases have a smell, color or taste it means that there are other gases mixed with Carbon monoxide as well. Since it's only the carbon monoxide that was entering in the cabin of vehicle of the victims that's why people didn't notice it because carbon monoxide doesn't have smell, colour or taste. . I hope this clears your confusion.

@@drbhutta Thanks You are first I found who explained at best Here people think heater itself is somehow letting the exhaust gases inside which is not true. Even if cars AC/Heater is off, CO can still enter and kill you if snow is on all sides
