This is a very very good interview and conversation and it touches at the heart of what jujitsu needs today.

also, a lot of top bjj teachers just DON"T KNOW how to train that way. I remember asking Carlos Machado in 1999 to show a punch/kick defense using Brazilian jiu jitsu; "oh that will come later..." he said, "today we will do De la Riva guard." Well, "later" came and went and we were never taught this. Then subsequently you saw how the Machados did when they tried MMA. So, not every top instructor knows how.

A lot people claim BJJ is nothing but kosen judo. Yes and no. If it wasn't for the Brazilians, newaza would be dead. Plus Brazil revolutionized jiu jitsu by incorporating no-gi and BJJ is so much more slick then judo. I have trained with well versed newaza experts from Japan but BJJ black belts are so much smoother. Thank you Demian for the lesson. I still love how u destroyed Chael Sonnen with a hiza guruma to sankaku jime. There are black belts, then there's Demian Maia

Clinching for self defense is delusional idea, that is 1 sure way to get stabbed and bleed out from the shiv u never saw in his pocket
