People easily overlook the fact that he's a broke Vietnam War veteran completely isolated, struggling with insomnia and certainly untreated PTSD. He's not a hero or a role model, but he's a dramatic character, relatable for many.

no matter how hard Travis tries to convince Betsy, he will always remain an outcast and loner, the child of a sick society, despite being so good and kind. While Betsy could easily have any man at her feet, she's almost perfect, It's so sad but also so real. i feel a lot like travis right now in my life 😢
