Carnival of the Animals: VII. Aquarium - Camille Saint-Saëns
A playful little scene set to the Aquarium movement of the Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns. Enjoy!
Some background info (taken from Wikipedia):
Violins, viola, cello (string quartet), two pianos, flute, and glass harmonica. The melody is played by the flute, backed by the strings, and glass harmonica on top of tumultuous, glissando-like runs and arpeggios in pianos. The first piano plays a descending ten-on-one, and eight-on-one ostinato, in the style of the second of Chopin's études, while the second plays a six-on-one. These figures, plus the occasional glissando from the glass harmonica towards the end-often played on celesta or glockenspiel-are evocative of a peaceful, di...

Maria Callas sings Verdi: Don Carlo, Act IV: "Tu che le vanita" Maria Callas was undoubtedly one of the greatest sopranos to ever grace the stage. Her voice, coupled with her beauty and dramatic flair, led to her being named "La Divina." Born in the United States to Greek parents, Callas moved to Greece early on in her life with her mother and sister. It was in Greece that she developed her tal...
Ysaye Plays Dvorak: Humoresque Op. 101 No. 7

Ysaye Plays Dvorak: Humoresque Op. 101 No. 7 Considered one of the most popular short pieces for solo piano, this arrangement of the Humoresque is for violin and piano. The violin part in this recording is played by the inimitable Eugene Ysaye, and while the sound quality isn't exactly the greatest (it was recorded in 1910) it definitely adds a certain warmth and charm to an already charming li...

I truly believe that classical masterpieces like these help in meditation and aid to join multiple meanings in interpretation and root expressions as polyglots aim to to form.

I love the little gliss at 0:54. The repeated note (Eb) was played with a gliss from a tone lower, i.e. Db glissing up to an Eb. Creates such a sweet cantabile sound, especially with the lovely tone of Ysaye's playing. The ritardando starting at 1:27 or so is rather emphasized yet without losing momentum in the music, and the way he broke that part into short little two-note phrases gives that part a yearning quality, only releasing when we get to the resolution at 1:32. Overall the abundance of glissandos gives the whole performance a sweet cantabile feel throughout, and the rubato are extremely espressive, for example the way he applied rubato to the phrase at around 2:09 puts us hanging on that B for just a little while, not very long but super effective in evoking emotions.

I love how he slides like very relaxed and not worrying about all the technical stuff, while now slide notes isn't that good recieved by some teachers (without generalizing) love Ysaÿe's playing, this is a true gift!

This guy studied with both Wieniawski and Vieuxtemps. These recordings of Ysaye are a very rare window into the some of these old legends. They're a treasure. And he plays it so beautifully, I really wish there was more of him, and of a higher quality. I mean I wish we had good recordings of Vieuxtemps too, and Wieniawski, Sarasate, Joachim.. That would've been fantastic. But we should be glad of what we do have and treasure it :P For example I feel extremely lucky that Enescu's recordings of all the Bach solo sonatas and partitas exist.
