Omnium Dogpacking: Beaver Lake Overnighter
Cowboy joins me on his first dogpacking overnighter with the Omnium Cargo V3. We took this very short trip to see how Cowboy likes dogpacking and to test my basket setup with the Omnium. We followed the route linked below from the Day Road Motorized Trailhead Parking Lot north of Clam Lake to Beaver Lake Campground in the Chequamegon National Forest. At camp I try fishing (no luck) and Cowboy learns he does not like clouds of gnats around his head. On the ride back we explore a dead-end two track (Davement!), make a quick stop at Pine Stump Corner and then head back. Overall the trip was a success, and I leaned a few things I will change for next time.

Well, it’s been about a month since the last Ramble. I guess that is better than the two months between show 9 and 10. Anyway, Seeley Dave and TJ are back for Northwoods Ramble Show 11 and a review of the winter that wasn’t. 2024 started out with a New Year's Day paddle down the Namekagon River for Dave and Liz. With almost no snow this winter, we go snow whale (swale?) watching to see the pile...

    Hey boys, nice ramble. The Boedecker "Dynomite" shack was definitely a CCC dynamite shack. I have seen historical documentation as well as spoken to old timers years back that were there. Take a close look at it. The roof is concrete. Inside the beams are logs but it clearly is concrete and it also shows that outside. The idea of the curved roof was in case of an explosion, the force would go up and not out. There are vents near the base for under the floor and three on the roof, all were plugged when it became a deer camp in the '90s. The current door is not the original door. That is long since gone and I believe it was metal. The window on the south was only put in for the deer camp. Before that, it was a solid wall. Frank Shafarik patched some of the cracks on the outside with fresh mortar when it became a hunting shack. On the NW corner the initials, FS are in the newer mortar. When I worked for the USFS, I had a collateral duty as an archeological paraprofessional and through that, I learned of at least two similar buildings on the Chequamegon. Boedecker Road formerly known as Hans Thompson Firelane, the name I prefer. But that is a story for another time. I can give more info on that shack, just buy me a beer or twelve.

      Thanks for coming along on this latest Ramble Paul, and for the great historical information! I'd love to hear more about your understanding of the CCC history in the area. If you ever want to get Pete Caron riled, just bring up Thompson Firelane ;) I'd rather hear the more measured story from you though. Maybe you could join us on a Ramble soon? As a fellow photographer in the Northwoods, I'd be interested in your perspective on chasing the ephemeral as well.

    Josh is doing an AWESOME job with The Nxrth! I’m so happy that I found the website last year. I’m from the Quad Cities (about an hour south of Dubuque) so I appreciate the more southern routes that have been published on The Nxrth. Disruptions foiled my plans to ride the Driftless Loop this summer, but I’m planning to ride the Tour de Nicolet in early October. Thanks for a great podcast!

    Shout out to The Nxrth....That's what introduced me to Life Above 8. I've spent a lot of time around Dunbar and the Marinette County Forest area around there so I'm very familiar with all the waterfalls on the Pike River. I should take a long weekend and try some of your waterfall loop through the eyes of a cyclist and not a trout fisherman. I'd probably feel more comfortable with a fat tire bike then on a gravel bike if I remember how sandy some of those Marinette Country roads can be...

    • @lifeabove8
      @lifeabove8 Год назад

      Right! There are some super soft sections of gravel/ATV trails over in Marinette County, but they are great to ride on with soft tires. I've had my gravel tires down to like 10psi, so a 2.6" tire or fatter would allow you to ride everything. Josh from The Nxrth is borrowing some of my bikepacking gear library soon, and we are talking about recording a podcast with him. Thanks for coming along on The Northwoods Ramble!

      Hey Craig, that is just a Insta360 One X2 video camera on a selfie stick clamped to my handlebars.
