The equivalent weight (also known as equivalent mass) of a substance is the mass of that substance that will react with or supply one mole of hydrogen ions (H⁺) in an acid-base reaction or one mole of electrons in a redox reaction. It is calculated using the formula:
Equivalent weight = Molar mass/ n-factor
Where:
Molar mass is the molecular weight of the substance.
n-factor depends on the type of reaction:
In an acid, it is the number of H⁺ ions provided by one molecule of the acid.
In a base, it is the number of OH⁻ ions provided by one molecule of the base.
In a redox reaction, it is the number of electrons exchanged per molecule of the substance.
