The equivalent weight (also known as equivalent mass) of a substance is the mass of that substance that will react with or supply one mole of hydrogen ions (H⁺) in an acid-base reaction or one mole of electrons in a redox reaction. It is calculated using the formula:
Equivalent weight = Molar mass/ n-factor
Where:
Molar mass is the molecular weight of the substance.
n-factor depends on the type of reaction:
In an acid, it is the number of H⁺ ions provided by one molecule of the acid.
In a base, it is the number of OH⁻ ions provided by one molecule of the base.
In a redox reaction, it is the number of electrons exchanged per molecule of the substance.

Also known as PVA, not to be confused with Polyvinyl Acetate adhesive, Polyvinyl alcohol adhesive is said to be somewhat more reversible than PVAc (polyvinyl acetate).Poly(Vinyl Alcohol) (PVA) PVA is manufactured by the hydrolysis of polyvinyl acetate in the presence of acids or alkalis.
