you got the dGPU? ive wanted to get a mobo with dGPU in it for mine for a looooong ass time, so curiosu (if so) how it performs? my i7 3840qm 4c8T is a monster, so id probs graft that cpu into it

@mohmad-y7e hey! Good question that I can't directly answer: What sort of software & hardware would be involved? If u can answer that for me 1: I cud test some stuff and 2: potentially create a 15-20mins video demoing said equipment!

it came with win11, but when i reinstalled i use rufus to bypass requirements. u shud just be able to enable secureboot tho!

@@TechDave i tried to in bios, it allowed me to, but it wouldnt boot after that. I found out its because the ssd it came with is in the wrong file format (mbr). Will have to find a way to change it.

@@TyEats2200 ahh ye i had that issue: change write type to GPT in rufus as well, bypass tpm/secure boot and shud be good to go

@annoyinguser that's actually a good idea, I'm looking at upgrading to a ultra wide next and use current wall mount with that, just using what I've got atm. Thanks for the comment! Look out for next video, I've made a few more upgrades already

@ravisharma3007 probably not as the motherboard of the x230 won't have a place to connect the gpu. However I've heard of a mod using mac book speakers in an x230, if I manage find it I'll report back

@@ravisharma3007 x230 win10? ye thats what i run on mine and it smashes it! perfect driver support etc, only thing needed is wireless kill-switch drivers and hotkey driver (both of which are on lenovo support page)!

@@TechDave thanks mate for replying. Looking to buy an X220 so I'm doing all the research lol. At my place, all i5 models are local and can be inspected in person. i7 though, only exists through Ebay and it is hard to verify stuff like Computrace and BIOS password.

@MarrisaL-bs2ch just go with an i5, they are good enough machine IMHO, if u need usb 3, ebay or buy an x230 then mod in x230 keyboard is an alternative option

@MarrisaL-bs2ch ps: if ur desperate for USB 3 buy the thinkpad min rock series 3 with USB 3.0 (fru/pin: 04w3940)

Exactly. That's why I made sure the laptop I bought has 16 gb. The only thing user upgradable is the SSD. Also, the battery could be replaced because it is screwed in, not glued.

@@TechDave Good point, have to look into that. My thinkpad from work handles it like a dream (60Hz), but that one's from last year (X1 Gen3 i think). The LG has a resolution of something like 2550x2880, which puts it in the realm of 4k.

edit: checked thinkwiki; essentially the same GPU as the x220 so no dice unfortunately :/

@clavius5734 I have an x280 that I'm fairly certain can push 4k, but I'm not sure how far back that compatibility goes with the x series, intel uhd 620 igpu. If u really wanted to persevere with ur x220, there's always an exp beast dock/expresscard eGPU with a desktop gpu, but it's a bit finicky til u work out the kinks

@@TechDave i'm on ebay watching 3 models, an 8th gen x1 carbon 16gb, a 16gb x280, and a 16gb t480s, once I've got the money I'll make the decision. I'm gravitating away from the t480s because I already have a t450s (which im planning on selling) asI find it a bit cumbersome carrying it around. anyway love the channel, very few make detailed laptop videos like these.

im running i3 windows manager on the X200 and its so low resource that its super snappy!

​@@TechDavei know, i also run i3. But on modern Thinkpads and the stupid modern S0 standby, they do not wake up as fast as yours. Is it consistent though, i.e. are there time when you close the lid, and the laptop does not suspend?

@MarrisaL-bs2ch no its pretty reliable, although I think it's coz it's i3wm on top of Linux mint, it barely uses any system resources so hence the rapid response Edit:I reread ur comment. Either way the x200 seems consistent

@@TechDave I love bass, cos it was the 1st instrument I've learned in some bands I played here in germany. Mine is an 80s japanese Jazzbass, the headstock is called McCormick which sounds more irish than japanese, but it isn't a fender jazzbass. Even the output volume of the pickups are bit lower than on an original fender jazz bass pickups. I do love the stingray basses for it's tone, but never played once. I just played a precision, a fretless one which was unique and a jaguar bass, which wasn't my cup of tea in store years ago.

plus better cpu and USB 3, i just love my x220, ive tried the kb mod 3 times and fried 2x x220 kb's trying the mod *sigh* i'd love to get it working on my 230 tho!

depends on ur budget and needs! is the 7490 meaning X490? the x230 is a solid device, but if u need power (assuming im correct) processing or otherwise, the X490 is gonna last you a lot longer futureproofing wise. that said: if u want a low price, budget linux/ win10 machine, the X230T (the higher end i5 for price to performance, the i7's still fetch WAY too high a price!) is a solid device and i use one myself for reading music (pdfs/adobe reader touch & iReal pro via android subsystem for windows), drawing {krita &/or gimp} (im crap at art lol), looping via Ableton (9 suite- better performance than 10/11/12 on old hardware), and a few other things, including the odd gaming session w/ an eGPU/gtx 750 ti! check the following video for more info about my X230T: ruclips.net/video/0ENZLkk_WpU/видео.html my fiancée uses her i7 X230T for drawing & digital art (she's incredible!), using 16gb ddr3 1600, 1tb sata ssd & 1tb mSata ssd (all of which i gave her as gifts ;) bonus partner points), and its still a great device for art

@@TechDave HI yeah im not so god either just do the tech art for relaxation , not a big gamer either , though i do enjoy a few just to relax , my e reader was stolen still read mostly tech trying to advance career from help desk , my edge 15 kept giving me error messages that it didn't have the necessary equipment for some installations such as wazuh

F to pay respects! im mulling over an X200 video, but i get occasional boot issues when cold booting, the CMOS seems to be working, but sometimes it just hangs on the splash screen/ThinkPad Logo. i've done a few videos on it related to Windows XP, but ha was a wild ride in terms of making it work. both the X200 + X220 (and my x201T) have lovely raised keys, and as air-gapped/glorified typewriters; Accept no subsitute!

nice! im on t480, p51, X230T & T430 that get regular use in day to day! t480 music production! P51 video editing and gaming! X230T Reading music & iReal Pro (via android subsystem for windows)! T430 recording drums! hows that X201? i have the X201T and its a lovely device!

@@RetosSpace ive got a few other but they are the ones in "active service". i've been temtped to get an X201 as i saw one for parts for £25! how's void linux? ive seen a few folks use it, but im still a noob (aka only really knowing my way are Ubuntu flavoured distros) random thing that u might be intrigued by: the X201T i have (and my x200) has a bootable Sd card slot, so ive run a few test systems OS's via that recently; kali/popos/mint & a couple others, thought it may interest you! perhaps i can test void with my 128gb sd card!

@@TechDave Void is great ,I'm by no means a Linux spokesperson,but been using Void for 2yrs and it's Superigjt ,uses Runit and not systemd and has it's own package manger which is super fast and their documentation is amazing ,it's actually simple ,I run Arcolinux,Arch and Peppermint on my other ThinkPads ,Try out Void,there is a very good review of it ok RUclips by OTB channel ,he's since passed away but his knowledge on Linux is superb,Go well Mate ,Greetings from Cape Town

@@methodenmonster it really depends on the gpu. With the rx 480, u cud easily display 2x4k, but gaming at that resolution is unlikely to yield any positive results, especially as the laptop is 2c4t 3rd gen cpu

@@TechDave 12 inches, a nice keyboard, and Thinkpad T430s quality workmanship, USB-C. Ideally a hard drive slot on the side but I won't be able to find one anywhere. I use Arch Linux.

@asdfgenrespasstasdf hmm. That will be hard to meet, but in general the x270 will be cheaper and has dual battery/bridge battery (and I believe USB c & standard power as well). If u were using Windows I'd say go with the x280 & get the max ram of 16gb, but as an arch user, the x270 shud more than meet ur needs and AFAIK has non-soldered ram as well Edit; No USB c on x270, so ur best choice may be x280 after all, defo get 16gb ram

@asdfgenrespasstasdf ps: I'm running endeavourOS/hyperland dual boot w/ windows10pro now on my x280. I regret the 8gb of ram tbh, this machine cud use the extra oomph for windows. EndeavourOS however, runs flawlessly, as it has lower overheads with hyperland. I assume ur not gaming, bit if I'm incorrect , or u have interest in eGPUs for gaming, I'd suggest the x280 w/ 16gb ram a: future proofing and b: they are still damn cheap, and as was shown in the video, some pretty decent quality games w/ egpu. I'm not sure but I think the x270 is not thunderbolt 3, just USB c, I cud be mistaken tho

2nd ssd currently running EndeavourOS/Hyperland, its lush!

very happy for u! mine is currently running endeavorOS/Hyperland (128gb nvme 2242) and win11pro (256gb nvme: main drive bay) I will soon be setting it up with WIn10Pro as a lightweight music device to replace the win11 install!

@EduardoArauz-rw9hy I wudnt say better, specifications wise the x series is weaker and less upgradable, but I don't have a t480s for direct comparison

no. it is not better. just smaller and weaker. but may have 300 nits screen instead of 220 nits screen which makes difference...

They have roughly the same chassis materials -- the X280 just doesn't have the same power profile and size. It's better if you're someone that values the portability enough. T480s is better if you value power and modularity along with the 14" screen size over 12.5" in the X280. I am a fan of both.
