"Robert Peterson: Somewhere In America" at the Wichita Art Museum
Contemporary artist Robert Peterson renders African American life beautifully and joyfully, rejecting stereotypes to celebrate the “Black experience as [he] knows it.” The artist’s first major museum exhibition, "Somewhere In America," features key paintings from Peterson’s existing works, as well as over 20 new works, many painted on a monumental scale.
Peterson picked up a paintbrush for the first time in 2012 to distract himself from an upcoming hip replacement. Today, his work sells out at art fairs and galleries and is collected by museums. This exhibition will be at the Wichita Art Museum September 28, 2024 - January 5, 2025.

A fascinating life, no doubt.
Wonderful talk
10, 15 seconds is acceptable and, surprisingly, used quite often today.
Too bad No HD available. Incredible collection
Thank you for uploading this ! Took my field trip with my art kids today and they loved it. This sculpture is BEAUTIFUL
We love hearing that. Thanks for visiting! :)
Too much fashion...not enough ART !!
They both look like men.
A master artist of Native Americans
O Keene had a certain allure in her youth but appeared to fade without any incentive for makeup or anything that would flatter her, looked very harsh to me for some reason, black appears to be a brutal and u flattering color to choose to represent oneself to the public. I seriously wonder what was going on in her head, one doesn’t have to present one self with dyed and styled hair but to be so severe all the time does make me question what was going on!
THERE IS SOMETHING TI BE SAID FOR UNIFORMS IN DAILY DRESS. I AM AT A TIME WHERE I WOULD CONSIDER GOING TO A SEAMSTRESS AND CHOOSING ONE FLATTERING DESIGN AND REPEATING IT IN VARIOUS TEXTURES AND COLORS. I DIS,IKE GOING TO MY CLOSET AND EACH DAY MAKING A DECISION ABOUT WHAT GOES WITH WHAT, AM ABOUT COMFORTABLE, NO MORE TIGHT FITT8NG OANTS ON THE WAIST ANDNI AM NOT OVER WEIGHT.
Okeefes earlier nude and very provocative pictures taken by her husband show her to be an attractive sensuous young woman, the pictures we begin to see in her pictures is a very somber aging woman who is in mourning, the severe image she appears to encourage does have a MOTHERE THERESA APPEARANCE WHO INDED HAS NOW BECIME KNOWN AS AN EVIL woman
Christopher Springmann is the photographer who created the opening image of Georgia O'Keeffe, taken in 1974 at her Abiquiú home, under the Alexander Calder mobile. This photograph also appears in "Georgia O'Keeffe and Her Houses," published by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico. A photo credit is given at 1:09:18 of this program - thank you!
Wonderful presentation..thank you!
This was most instructive. I have always painted and am of fan of both these iconic women. I have been disabled for five years. I have a wheelchair in my life now and find that dressing up if I am able to leave my home is important. So people see me and not just the wheelchair. I have both the styles of both your subjects at the same time. I have a bamboo cane and bowler hat with pinstriped men's suit and have also a crown of red rose's and clothing that I have worn in honor of Frida. It all just came together organically as I pulled out items from my wardrobe. Black and white have also been my tones. I have shaved of all my hair and as it has grown back I know wear my hair like a man's hair cut. This just happened organically too. I just can't take care of myself in that way anymore. I do still love to do my makeup because I can do that sitting down but is not something I do unless it's vinyl night. I loved learning about the two women that I embody at the same time but was not aware of my doing this things together until I watched this incredible look into there lives. I loved listening and learning about both women. It's was fascinating to see there clothing and items in the collection. I have plans to work on some abstract art this week because I feel it could be my best work as a painter. I am my own inspiration and my own muse. I had started smoking cigarettes because I know longer want to live forever. I might even paint a pack of my favorite cigarettes that I now crave so often. It so hard to find inspiration while living in so much pain. I want to thank you for all of your work celebrating there work. I just loved listening to speak about them and you nailed it!!!🖤🖤🖤
Wow! Thank you so much for all the fascinating information on earlier Native American culture, especially in relation to the central importance of the Buffalo.
Essa apresentação é simplesmente preciosa, o humor e o amor ao falar das obras e da artista simplesmente são coisas que me encantaram de uma forma que não posso descrever, me fez amar mais ainda a Mary Cassatt <3
Fabulous painter and a highly enjoyable lecture. Thank you.
I'm only 24 minutes in and this is already one of the most enjoyable vids I've been fortunate to come across. The museum has been added to my bucket list, and I look forward to it soon as it's less than 500 miles away. Would make a very worthy, and incredibly beautiful motorcycle trip :)
What is the website with photis of okeeffe rafting?
Well thought out and very interesting, thank you xX
lovely. I really enjoyed the curator talk, though somewhat disappointing is the limited representation of both their work in the exhibition.
Wonderful oration.
This is AMAZING!!!!!!
What a treasure Carolyn Kastner is - brought this famous artist to life 🙏🏽
Im an artist and live in the desert. I relate and understand her want to be immersed in the beauty around her. When your outside, the landscape consumes you and the experience is addicting. Placing those windows helps create the same experience within the home. I love how she could see the beauty in it all. Her excitement of exploring the landscape around her is childlike, collecting bones etc. She is very inspiring in the sense she captured her experience and was able to express it and share that with the world.
What a great presentation, thank you!
Great stories, history. Beautiful artwork too. Thank you Preston
I don't know who the narrator is but she's very annoying the way she boggles her head around. It's making me dizzy. Then there's her voice. OMG. Georgia would probably laugh if she saw this.
Great presentation, but don’t be afraid to blow your nose.
Loved this talk. I saw the clothing exhibit at the Peabody Museum. Was fascinating to myself, who sews. Thank you.
Was she bi-sexual? She looks like a man or a wanna be man. Her clothes are mannish. Seems she wore few skirts. Probably struggled with her sexuality. This was not even brought up. Sad for her.
THIS IS A F-----KG SNOB LECTURE,,,,,,,,,FOR TOURISTS
Creative, artistic people go with their own rules and ideas. 🎭 She was ahead of her time dressed for comfort.
Thank you! I enjoyed learning more about her life at home & all she did to make those houses her own. I love her life's story & all her art. 💓
Very interesting & well spoken presentation on a favorite & inegmatic figure of our culture. 🌟
Loved your inside to this great artist embracing through art her environment, nature and imagination, she climbed many mountains to conquer the feeling of completeness and freedom❤️🧑🎨
Thank you - very interesting.
Thank you! Very interesting.
I loved this! Thanks for the wonderful presentation. 😊
I wonder if young Georgia O'Keefe was aware of Frank Lloyd Wright's style of dress, both of which remind me of the severity of rural Wisconsin culture of the time.
It is said that Stieglitz NEVER ONCE visited new mexico.....?
Abiqui, NM = Witches.
Very interesting
Thanks . Although I knew a little bit about both houses, your explanations gave me more knowledge and comprehension about her way of living, how meticulous she was, so aware of what she needs and the importance of her space. Her studio and views were sacred. How dare someone could get inside. Her voice did not tremble to tell her, if that happen again, she won’t be able to visit anymore. Her paintings are beautiful, so was the way she arranged her furniture. Few pieces, but modern, great for the ambiance of the house. Hope to listen to further lectures. A pleasure!
Very well edited
Agreed! They did a very nice job on all of these!
Thanks for immortalizing the history on the internet, very interesting, which this would show up further in the searches for Wichita history videos, it was kinda hard to sift and find.
Had a wil raven dream, obsessed since to learn about it- thank you
You're vastly underestimating the amount of bison the government and settlers killed vs the Indians
I think is does both of them a deeper injustice by labeling the art nude works they did together.... as not good for their reputation...... regardless of whether the social drama of that time ....deemed them shameful or damaging. That needs to stop. KNOCK IT OFF
