Party of One - UTAH
This is a recent demo I made. I'm using the TC Helicon PLAY Acoustic for harmonies and Alesis SR-16 Drum Machine. Good times. Just gives you an idea of the flexibility.
In case you are wondering about the sunglasses. They are 'readers'. LOL. I figured they look better than performing with typical reader glasses.

A short 'how to' video that I wished I'd had when I first bought my TC Helicon Play Acoustic. There are PLENTY of vids on what it DOES, but very few on HOW TO DO IT. I'm hoping this will help some who just purchased a unit and need to know how to get started. what if you do not play guitar but you sing, play drums, flute and piano.. what voice processor might be the best one? I like the idea of this one, the TC acoustic for actually handling the room you are in, like being inside a church or outside a field... but maybe there are better ones today for singers and those that do not play guitars? What do you guys suggest? thanks

    • @ppalm951
      @ppalm951 4 месяца назад

      I perform both solo and with a band (trio). When I play solo I of course also play acoustic guitar and run my guitar into the input. However, I am vocalist for the band (not playing guitar). What we do is, our rhythm guitarist bought a 1/4" Y jack. It splits his signal so he runs his guitar straight to the mixer/PA but also provides a line to my TC Helicon so it can read the chords, in effect 'borrowing' signal from another instrument. You may be able to do something similar with piano (electronic keyboard?). Something that is playing background chords (even keys) would be recommended. Flute would only be occasionally played. So, guitar, keyboard (bass?) would be preferred. But I'm not sure how well it would read keyboard but I bet it would. It's listening for the pitch and chords. Would just have to experiment.

      @@ppalm951 i see… maybe is still a viable choice.. how does it change automatically to read your acustic environment to tell if you are inside lije a church with echo or put in a field with flat sound? It reads this in some way and adjust delay, reverb etc automatically for you in a really good way?

    • @ppalm951
      @ppalm951 4 месяца назад

      @@SimplicityForGood I don't rely on 'ambient' sound to read the key and chords. That's why I make sure to have an input from an instrument. Wouldn't trust it as much using ambient sound. Unless you are pitch perfect, the instrument input really helps keep the harmonies on pitch too. I can sing pretty well, but I notice that if I'm not getting a signal from the guitar, the harmonies tend to stray much easier and don't sound right. As far as adding the effects you mentioned (reverb, delay, etc. . ) Those have to be added in the customization settings that my vid describes. The unit does not add it on the fly or automatically. You have to setup and tweak how you want the vocal to sound and also set what you want the harmonies to do (1 higher, 1 lower? 2 higher? Only 1 lower? Only 1 higher? Male backup singers? Female backup?). You have all those options. I use several of these different options depending on the song. I don't think there is any unit that is automatically going to be able to read your sound and automatically add reverb and delay. You program the sound you want and then select that file for your particular song. I use the '2 harmonies above' for a lot of songs. I also have reverb set to how I like it.

      @@SimplicityForGood You can adjust/tweak the reverb and effects to your liking. the TCH does a pretty good job. Our band just uses a basic mixer but my vocals already have just the right amount of reverb for my liking (from the TC Helicon). Last night at a gig we did Dancing with Myself by Billy Idol. Has reverb and delay. Works great. Not sure about separate channels for each of your instruments. Sounds like you need a small mixer. That's what I use even for solo. Quick question. Will the vocal effects function without a guitar plugged in?

    • @ppalm951
      @ppalm951 6 месяцев назад

      The answer is YES. You may still talk or sing through the unit and activate effects without guitar. Just run your Mic into the input on the back of the unit and then run Mic OUT into your Amp or Mixer. However, the BIG function of having the guitar is to help your harmonies hit the correct notes and key you are singing in. Very difficult to keep harmonies smooth without it reading guitar, unless your voice is pitch perfect. Otherwise your harmonies may be off and also vary in pitch. I play solo and I input my guitar. Works great. But I'm also vocalist for a band. So our guitarist bought a 'Y' cable. One lead goes into TC Helicon and the other lead goes to mixer/PA so we get the best of both worlds. I highly suggest having some instrument to help the harmonies stay on pitch

    Can I reorganize the existing profiles in a different order so i can have my few good ones all in a row?

    • @ppalm951
      @ppalm951 7 месяцев назад

      YES you can. That's the way I have mine setup. I'm in a classic rock cover band (and also do solo stuff). I have over 300 songs in my library but only use maybe 10 different effects (basically only 2 of them 80% of the time). So I have the ones I use most in my first 15 slots. The easiest way to do all that customizing and sorting is by connecting your unit to your PC. Are you familiar with how to do that?

    • @ppalm951
      @ppalm951 7 месяцев назад

      In case you are not, here's how to do it: -You'll first want to make sure you have the "Voice Support 2' app installed on your laptop or PC (free from Google Play store as I recall) -Use the cable from the unit (or any USB cable that fits into the connection on rear of unit) -When you plug it into PC, it should recognize that something has been plugged in -NOW, open the Voice Support app -The app should 'SCAN' your unit and settings (bar at the bottom should be showing progress) -If it recognizes everything that's a good sign -FIRST before doing anything make a BACKUP of what you now have so you don't lose anything -Do this by clicking on PRESETS tab at the top -Now click on the icon that says 'BACKUP ALL' -On left hand side of app you should see BACKUPS and now one for today -What you can do now that you have a backup is begin making changes -By clicking on one of the preset names, you will see a line with PRESET NAME. You can rename here if you'd like -As far as rearranging the order, you can now try and drag/drop to new position. You will be given options to 'move, paste, insert or swap'. This is why having made a backup is important in case you booger something up you can restore your old backup easily. -Once you've made your intended changes DO ANOTHER BACKUP before disconnecting

      No. The pedal buttons only move you from one preset to another and then the HIT button turns effect ON/OFF. Just curious, how much more accurate does running your guitar through the unit make the harmonies? I am mostly an electric guitar player and front man, they don’t make the “play electric” anymore for running your electric guitar through, I’m probably going to get this unit as I do the occasional acoustic gig but I probably shouldn’t be running my electric guitar through it. Are the harmonies still pretty accurate and useable? 🤔

    • @ppalm951
      @ppalm951 Год назад

      In my experience it makes a pretty big difference. Been using this unit for a few years now. Without the guitar you have to be 'spot on' with your notes for the harmonies to sound right. The harmonies are less forgiving. WITH the guitar, they seem to track better. The harmonies can read the notes from the guitar to know where they are supposed to be. Without it, they are guessing by using only your voice. Any variation of your voice can throw them off. You likely can use your electric for harmonies. The unit is designed to 'enhance' raw acoustic guitar when it runs through the unit. And it DOES work well. However, one doesn't HAVE to run the guitar THROUGH the unit to make it work. I'm in an acoustic band and only do vocs for the band. One of our guitarists splits his output signal with a 'Y' jack and sends a line to my Play Acoustic. The unit only reads the guitar signal for harmonies. It's not going through the unit to the PA. He has his own acoustic processor and runs direct to the mixer. Can likely do the same with electric. Just t have to adjust your input signal to make sure it's not too 'hot'. Likely best to have a clean signal, but I'm guessing it would work

To the left of the main display is a tiny little light marked as 'in'. If it is not lighting up while guitar is strumming or playing then your signal won't work. The light should be green when guitar is strummed. The way to do it is to strum at peak level as if actually playing. To adjust input level, have unit on, PRESS Setup button to right of display. Now PRESS Mix button on left side. The display should highlight the 'GUITAR' setting. Now use the center knob to increase/decrease guitar input level. NO light (while strummimg) means no signal. RED light means TOO MUCH signal. Use the knob to increase, decrease. You want to see it lighting up green, but not peaking at red (or even yellow if you can avoid). This is why you also want a steady signal for your feed. On electric, if your kicking in overdrive, it's likely to shoot your level into the red zone. Best of luck

      @@danielkandela I just checked and I believe the 'shift' setting is what you are looking for. If it's 'shifting' your voice too much, press the button next to it to highlight, and then use the knob to turn down the shift effect. See if that works

    Can I just plug the wires directly into a speaker

    • @ppalm951
      @ppalm951 Год назад

      For best quality sound you are going to need to run them into a mixer and then from the mixer into speakers or Amp. There IS a headphone jack (micro jack) on the backside, but I've never tried it. I prefer to adjust separate levels for guitar and vocal. The headphone jack is going to give you just whatever mix comes out. Likely not high quality. If using headphone jack, if your guitar has volume adjustment you could adjust your guitar volume that way vs your vocal and sort of mix it like that I suppose. That's supposing your 'speaker' has a micro input.

      @@ppalm951 You're welcome. Been binge-watching open mic tips latey, as well as TC Helicon Play Acoustic tutorials, LOL, as I'm getting a few songs ready to perform at an open mic in the near future...It was fun to see your first video from 9 years ago (which was good!) and then to see that you're still pugging away, making music. I don't currently have the Alesis SR-16 but I used it a ton when I led worship at camps way back in the 90s. You're right - the sounds are really good for an old drum machine. Anyhoo - nice work.

    You have drum and bass backing tracks?

    • @ppalm951
      @ppalm951 Год назад

      Actually, we are using NO backing tracks. The drums are from an Alesis SR-16. I'm the 'drummer'. Can start/stop with pedal and can also do drum fills and rolls. Been gigging with that for 25 years. Awesome for small group or even solo. Drums sound legit (SR-18 not as good). As for bass, none. The music is strictly 2 acoustic guitars. Rhythm guitarist would sort of carry the bottom end with some beefy settings. If you look up CryWolf Utah on RUclips you should find our promo vid. Using same setup. TC Helicon for vocs and harmonies and Alesis for drums. Guitars are running through Zoom acoustic guitar units. We've really dialed in our sound. Having a lot of fun. ROCK ON!
