I do the exact same thing with my machines re: writing on a computer/laptop first and then retyping it on the typewriter! It's more engaging to make real-time edits/adjustments as you go, and after a page is typed out I can even go back with whiteout or a pen and read it back over Another time that way! Something very satisfying about going over a few freshly typed pages with a red pen like a teacher or something, I dunno 😅 that typewriter is a gorgeous color btw, I love the look and sound! Cheers 💜

I recently dusted off my Brother Charger 11 typewriter. It was given to me by my parents one Christmas when I was about 10. Held onto it all these years. Started writing a short story with it. I find that because I can't simply delete words as I write, it makes me think longer and compose the sentence in my mind as best I can before I commit it to paper. Not sure if that makes the writing better...but using it along with a paperback thesaurus, I find the disconnection from tech is a great feeling.

I feel like when you sit at a typewriter, it feels more like work (in a good way) than sitting at a computer. The keys might be harder to press depending on the typewriter (some easier than others), so you're actually getting a little workout, with the moving of your arms from time to time to move the carriage. Whereas, regular keyboards for laptops are so easy you don't feel the weight of each letter, it's often so lightweight a touch to type on a laptop.

There are apps that allow you to have the mechanical typewriter sounds on the computer, but those merely sound cool. The computer keybopard still lacks the haptic tension and feedback of a mechanical typewriter keyboard that make typewriters as valuable for creative and studious writing as handwriting. With a typewriter, as with handwriting, there is an actual activity, a physical effort, involved in writing that you don't have with a computer, especially not with a touch screen. Adding to the haptic feedback, typewriters also carry permanence. Many typewriters don't have a backspace key and non of them have a delete key. What you write is written, it is final. You are much more conscientous and focussed about what you write. If you make a mistake on the final line of the page, you have to rewrite the entire page, not just hit Delete a few time and correct it. What happens on the paper stays on the paper. The best thing to do is just keep writing. No editing while drafting! Don't get the words right, get the words written. You can always correct the errors when you transcribe to the computer in edit.
