An ambitious runner and running coach
Race Day, Tarawera Ultra-Trail New Zealand, My first 100 miler
I started running in 2019, and soon learnt about ultra races. The Tarawera Ultra-Trail New Zealand has been a bucket list race for me since then.
Although I live in the UK, I was born in New Zealand, so it only seemed right that I chose this race as my first 100 miler.
I'm also a running/ultra running coach:

Hi Rob, what would your shoe of choice be if you ran it again? Cheers
Great question. I just bought a pair of Norda, it’s early days, but they are great. There was nothing wrong with the Altra Mont Blanc though, so at this point I’d say the Altra’s.
@@rob_joines thanks. From what I have read, it looks like a pair of shoes that can handle mud and rocks, but also is quite a runnable shoe for large parts of the course is essential.
Congrats Rob! Which descent did you find the hardest?
I struggled on the final decent with what felt like a stress fracture in my right foot. But after the race it turned out to be that my foot had swollen and the shoe was causing pressure. Mostly the decents were pretty friendly.
I’m training for UTA 2025 ❤
I’ve only heard great things about that race. Hope the training goes well 🤙🏼
Great video and congrats!
Thank you 🤙🏼
Great video. If you started in 2019 wow a miler and sub 24 really well done! Gathering intelligence, hoping to come down as a destination race to start with the 102k and then the miler as my first miler (prob at 58-60yrs). Vids like these detailing your experience are really helpful. thanks!
Appreciate the comment, thank you. And I hope you enjoy your racing, it’s an awesome adventure 🤙🏼
Great job with the video…. I just signed up for my 1st ultra at 58 yrs old…. These vids are inspiring !! Txs
That’s awesome! Best of luck with your ultra 🤙🏼
9:20 looks like a great spot to run!
To be honest, the entire race was a beautiful place to run. But yes, the Tarawera Forest was spectacular.
Congrats on completing 100 miles! How many of those were done by boat? 😂
Yeah, it’s a unique course with the boat ride, it’s about a mile boat ride, but obviously not counted as part of the 100 miles 😂🤙🏼
So proud of you and Will would crew for you anytime just buy my flights 😂😂❤
Haha 😂😂😂
Loved the video rob. Such a gorgeous country i live in. My pleasure supporting you. Hopefully do so over more races.
You’re always welcome to come over and crew again at CCC in 2025 😄🤙🏼
Great video Rob, and a sub 24 for your first 100 miler is unbelievable! Well done! Look forward to more content
Thanks Jim, I appreciate the support 🤙🏼
beautiful 🤩
Thank you! Cheers! It’s a wonderful country to run in.
@@rob_joines Many more beautiful places. Would like to see through your video. 🤍
That scenery is breathtaking Rob! Looking forward to race day 👍
New Zealand is awesome for beautiful scenery, Dave.
Friend, on the day you ran, how many degrees of temperature was it?
It was a night race, I think it was pretty mild, around 9°C 🤙🏼
I live about 3hrs from Rotorua and am doing my first miler at 50yrs at Tarawera Enjoy your time in NZ
Awesome, I hope you’ve enjoyed the training, best of luck on the day 🤙🏼
Sponsored by the word ‘specificity’!! Well done Rob
Cheers Dave
It wasn't clear, did he like the views?
Everyone loves the views 🤙🏼
Why do you need water? You can just stand outside naked or shirtless like here. Or go into some giant freezer for few minutes.
Doesn’t get cold enough to just stand outside here in the UK 🇬🇧😂
Good luck on the race Rob
Hi Rob! I've got some questions about the race. Do you really need to take the bus? Or can you book a hotel/house at the starting place? do you need to get your race bib in a different place then the start? Where did you sleep? I'm hoping to do this race this year.
Hi, I prefer to stay near the finish, as less time to travel once the I’ve finished the race. You pick your race bib up near the finish line, so generally speaking it’s easier to stay near the finish. But you could stay near the start, but you’d need to get to the finish line area to collect your bib. I rented an Airbnb in town, it was great. Definitely recommend the race, it’s fantastic.
This was my first 100k, Turns out flat terrain can be tough too... How do you think this race compares to other 100k races?
I’ve ran 2X 100k that has 1000m elevation. This was the toughest. The terrain, especially the boulder fields were hard to navigate, especially in the dark. The flooding/puddles were deep in places too.
Nice one Rob…what a burger for the pre race!
Very tasty too. Not my normal pre race meal, but had about 10 hours until the race started. 10pm race start was a new one for me, so no real experience on what to eat that early in the day.
Yep according to dad
Good work Rob. Would be extra hard in the dark. I understand the extra test and challenge of it but don’t think I’d enjoy that as part of the fun for me is the scenery.
Yeah, I enjoy a bit of scenery too, CCC was spectacular for that. It was a different type of scenery, being able to see head torches in the distance and the lights all along the coast was fun too. Just couldn’t see it all that well on the GoPro.
What a long queue! Too bad about the audio. You'll get it next time!
Thanks. Very frustrating when I played the footage back and there was no sound, but did the best I could with what I had. 🤙🏼
Great job Rob! 😁💪👏👏👏
Thank you 🤙🏼
Well done Rob! 🦾
Cheers Gary 🤙🏼
Brutal. Had similar issues on other video projects, lost hours of usable footage. Had to add music and make it a montage, redubbing or narrating any parts needing explanation.
Yep, that’s my plan. Hard though as it was a night race, so not a lot of great footage to talk over, was more about getting my “in race” reactions/feelings. But hey 🤷🏼♂️ nothing I can do, but adjust the plan 🤙🏼
Good luck Rob. Looks like a beautiful run.xx
Thank you ☺️😘
Good luck Rob, I hope the TMO doesn't get involved in your race
🤣🤣🤣
Good luck Rob 👏
Cheers Matt 🤙🏼
It started snowing this week in the eastern parts of Norway. Running in 10-20 cm powder with snow blowing in your face is always a good time. Looks like Kullaberg is about 400 km south of Oslo, so you only get cold water blowing in your face 😁 Good luck tomorrow Rob!🤙
Wow, that sounds cold!! I’ve not had the pleasure of running in snow, or really cold conditions yet. Tomorrow should be a great run, thank you 🤙🏼
Good luck Rob!!
Thanks Dave 🤙🏼
Hi Rob! Hope you're going to make a video about Kullamannen as well. I really enjoyed your video from CCC! 🤙
I’ll give it my best shot. The Kullamannen race starts at 10pm, so will be very dark/hard to record. But I’ll have the GoPro and I’ll see how it comes out. A race review video for sure. 🤙🏼
That chocolate milk is the best 👌
100% agree!! I’ve tried plenty of different chocolate milks, this is the best by far. Not the cheapest, but definitely worth every penny.
hope you are feeling well again rob!
Cheers Paul, ribs are all better now thanks 🤙🏼
Hi Rob! I've just found your channel and I'm a new subscriber. Looking forward to seeing more from your channel!
Thank you, I really appreciate the support 🤙🏼
Thought for a sec u were gonna show some new camera equipments or some shit.. so wrong was i😂
No point in having a camera if you can’t film yourself making coffee 😂😂
Good job Rob! Is it difficult to get a spot in the race? How many stones had you collected before the lottery?
I’ve heard stories of people trying for years to get into the race. I only had one running stone, so was lucky. I didn’t get in on the initial draw, I was on the waitlist, and then got a place from there. It’s the first year they’ve done the running stones collection, but like all ballots, it’s simply the luck of the draw.
Wow! Must have felt great receiving the mail that you were in!
Yeah, definitely. But also meant a lot of accommodations were gone too, so very few reasonable priced places to choose from.
Hi Rob, just a quick question. Maybe you mentioned it, and I didn't catch it, but do they allow you to use drop bags at CCC? So you don't have to carry all those gels from the start. I hope you will make more videos, and that the channel keeps growing. All the best🤙
There are no drop bags for CCC. But you can have assistance at the aid stations in Champax Lac, Trient and Vallorcine. My Mum was at the aid stations as my crew with the gels and tailwind etc for me. But also, the aid stations are so well stocked, you could easily just run without any extra nutrition to carry.
Awesome mum! Thanks for the info, Rob.
Hi Rob, always interesting to hear how other people fuel their races. Did you have any strategy for electrolytes?
Hi Mike, tailwind is basically my electrolyte and hydration strategy. But I also run with salt sticks too, just in case it’s a bit hotter and I feel cramping coming on, they are my backup plan. But it’s all based on my own experiences, I’ve not done any sweat tests or anything like that to get a more accurate understanding. I also don’t suffer cramping very often in races either. 🤙🏼
Absolutely.
Thanks for responding to my request Rob. A great insight into what you consume and how you plan it.
Always a pleasure, thanks for engaging, I really appreciate it 🤙🏼
Hi There! Great Job! May I ask you one thing: before Trient you've mentioned, that this is your longest ultra. Where did you get 100K index (or you just had 50K before?) and gained 640 ITRA points for this run? And I assume, this CCC 2023 was for you a more-less training run, as with 640 ITRA the chances of going under 15 Hours are high... Thanks and cheers!
Hi, thanks for the comments. Previously I’ve run a few ultras, I ran the Kullamannen 50k in Sweden last year and Race to the Stones 100K in 2021 & 22. I’ve also run UltraX Scotland 125 (now 110) and England 125 (now also 110) in 2022 which all contributed to my Index Score. In terms of longest run, my previous 100K races took me about 10hrs 30min, so at that stage of the race I had been running for over 11hrs (should have clarified for a better understanding).
Definitely wasn’t a training run, just didn’t go as I had planned. I think I can definitely go much faster next time I have a crack at it, possibly in 2025.
@@rob_joines Thanks ! definitely you should do CCC second time! From my own experience I must say, that second CCC is way much better and easier to run as the first one :)
Yes, I learnt so much on this run, my first mountain ultra, steep learning curve, but great lessons learnt.
Well done mate! Kudos to you! That was a quick time!
Cheers Rafael.
Your breathing sounds shallow
Yep, it definitely is.
Well done Rob 🙌🏼 Great running and great video! Those views! 😍
Thanks Gary. It’s an amazing race. Definitely recommend adding it to everyone’s list of race to run.
Rob, that was amazing! Thoroughly enjoyed it. Would watch more, have subscribed and hit the bell for more videos and notifications! Views were stunning, hope the ribs are OK xx
Cheers Matt. The views made the race, it was amazing. Planning the next video shortly, appreciate the support 🤙🏼
