I'm probably one of the original "Bedroom Studio" musicians. Since about 1975 I've been multi-tracking myself & friends in my home studio. Though not a professional, I've played in bands. I play multi-instruments & am self-taught. I've always been involved in music. Worked in the record biz as producer, and sometime band manager. And though I've written & co-written quite a few songs, I'm my own worst critic. But what I do love to do, is find a great song, or a song really I love, and do my cover version of it. I don't always try to do it exactly as it's done on the record version. I just do it the way it hits me. However it moves me, and hopefully I can figure out a way to keep it interesting. More than anything, it's what I've always enjoyed doing for almost 50 years. Some of my recordings go way back, so you have to consider the available technologies of those times. Lately I've been adding photos & making videos out of them and sort of revitalizing them.... To myself anyway....

My friend Chuck was a real 'Parrot-Head' for Jimmy Buffet. So thru the years we recorded a few of his songs. This one I undertook on my own, playing and singing all the parts. Buffet was a very interesting character, and great songwriter.

MIKE HICKS - Original 2001 - Don't know what came over me, but one night in my little studio this just came out. Never planned. Spur of the moment. Threw it on tape quickly, as I thought it might be one I'd get back around to. Like so many others, never did. But I thought it went well with some of the authentic parade footage from New Orleans.

A cool instrumental track brought in by our great guitarist, Ed Woodruff. I gave him credit for writing the song, but he informs me that it's really a Norman Connors song called "Chucka". Sorry 'bout that........ Ed Woodruff - plays a couple of guitars on this track, as well as bass and piano. Multi-talented fella....His thrashingly good guitar solo is just the contrast the song needed at that ...

The Jackie DeShannon/Burt Bacharack/Hal David Masterpiece. It is timeless. We always need it, now more than ever. I don't know what possessed me to even think to learn & record such a song? But the basic song came almost instantly. It was not difficult to learn, and I've put my own orchestral fills & such. I've always loved the song, and the world needed love at that time, like we do now.

MIKE HICKS & Friends - Some guys I used to jam with, several years ago. Not exactly sure who's all on it. I know it is that I played guitar and sang. Probably Joe Carson on drums - Ed Woodruff on Lead Guitar - Dave Ritz on Bass - and could be a couple of other guys I can't remember now.........

Rats... I was going to try to get this video together before Halloween, but it's closing in and time is a factor. For some reason the Movie Maker program I'm using is a little glitchy on a couple of my edits. Try as I might, I'd edit it right, and I'm a good editor with decades of experience, every time I'd hit playback, it would add or subtract fractions of seconds on the audio track. So, rath...

Very atmospheric Mike ☺
Wow; Great video! Especially when the cymbal crashes exactly when the car almost hit the cameraman! Goes well with the music.

Ha. Thanks.
nice!!! congratulations for Brazil!!!
Thank you so much. Very glad you like it.
Very good!
Thanks!
Dickey, Pat and Mike have all passed away. Dickey and the Valentinos are playing in a higher place now. We were just given the gift for a few precious years
@@venessabuchanan6199 thanks for responding. Dickey died from poor health? I never got to tell him how important he was to me.
Found searching for covers of this song. Cool version. Nice job.
Thanks so much.
I took guitar lessons from John for a while he's really nice guy
And love Anne
Love Ann is on both, Dickey's Facebook page, and my RUclips Channell, MIKE HICKS COVER VERSIONS.
Mike hicks amazing for you to share claw hammer with that bass Dickey and my Pat. They are rocking it together forever. My sons get to see and play there dad’s guitars. Thank you
Oh, for sure! I'm glad you found it, and I'm glad you liked it. Dickey was my best friend for 38 years, and we recorded a lot of stuff over all those years. I have stuff from Dickey's earliest bands, from about when he was 19 through the rest of his life. So I met Dale a little while before they were both playing in Cottonmouth. Then we had BRAT, then U.S. Kids, Dickey & the Valentinos and The Dickey Ferguson Band. Plus I have stuff I recorded on Dickey at my little studio, and of he and I playing & singing together. I've recently developed a tremor in my hands, which pretty much put and end to my guitar playing. So for the last couple of years I've been going through a bunch of those old tapes and putting pictures with them and making music videos, and then of course I have some live stuff as well on his various bands. I keep a Facebook tribute page to Dickey. A lot of music videos are downloaded there. Then I have my RUclips channel called "MIKE HICKS COVER VERSIONS. If you look that up, I have almost 300 songs there. I'm so glad your kids get to enjoy Pat's guitars. I know that means a lot to them. Thanks for contacting me.
Thank you Mike to all of them lost and loved

I don’t do social media. I’m not on Facebook etc. We kept the videos but we can’t view them
Okay, great. I can probably help you with those, depending on what format they're record on. If they're on disc or vhs, I can probably convert them so you can view them. I'd love to take a look at what you have, and maybe even use some of them or parts of some of them on my Dickey page. I know their fans would love to see them. Thanks for contacting me. My email is: mykicks@aol.com
Yes, just email me: mykicks@aol.com

A lot of people don’t even know about Rickey. But Dickey delt with it his whole life
Yeah. They were almost like twins. But Rick was a badass. We always knew that if something broke out, he would have everybody's back. Tough, nice guy. Went to his funeral of course. When heard about the fire, he either threw or broke his Les Paul Jr., and buried it with Rickey. It was sad, and it was hard to go through that with him. That and his dad.
I only saw 'em once, they were great!
Cool! Check out the DICKEY FERGUSON facebook page for tons of stuff I've been posting for years of Dickey and his bands. Lots of videos and other stuff! Thanks.
Very intersting way to play it, so different but still got the vibe!
Thanks! That's exactly what I shoot for when I make my cover versions. I realize I'm not The Doors, I'm not The Beatles or anyone else. All I can do is MY versions, to the best of my ability. Thanks for listening, and for your comments. I've got another 200+ for you to listen to....Ha.
Hi How Are Y'all Doing Its Kenny King From Mineral Wells Texas Living in Dallas Texas Now 06-23
Hi Kenny! Good to hear from you. I was going to get in touch with you to see if I could get some info on that session that I believe you did with Dickey. I'm making music videos from some of those songs, and I'd like to be able to give any pertinent and interesting facts that had to do with that or those sessions. I don't know anything about it, other than I have copies of the songs. I was wondering maybe you could tell me where & when they were recorded. Who was even on it besides Dickey. Was it just the Valentinos, or did you have studio musicians? Any facts you might know about any of his original songs vs. the cover songs. So anything you could tell me on this stuff would help me greatly when I'm typing up the credits at the end of the music videos I'm making, and any little stories that you might remember, either about the session(s), or about Dickey in general. So how are you? We're just kicking along. I've about had to stop playing guitar because I've developed a tremor in my fret hand, and it makes it harder to hit the chords. I can still play leads, but I haven't picked up a guitar for about 3 months, which is really unusual for me. Over the last 3 or 4 decades, it would be unusual for me to go more than a couple of days without playing or recording something. I don't think Dickey ever told me how you guys met, and exactly how y'all knew each other and for how long, and was it just a professional producer/artist type relationship, or did you guys hang out, or party or fish or anything? I just feel I don't know much about y'all even though Dickey talked about you a lot. But I guess he didn't say much on these things. I don't know. I've become very forgetful. I'm getting up there you know......But anything you could tell me would be helpful when I'm making these videos. Did you have any other recordings of him, or any photos or anything like that.....? Thanks
What a beautiful friendship you had with Dickey and I loved the photos of you two through the years. What a legacy and treasure trove you are blessed to have and share. Dickey was a force of nature as were all of these musicians. Thank you soo much for sharing Mike!
We did. We were truly brothers, almost from the minute we met. We were extremely close. I went through his tragedies like his brother Rick dying, and then his dad's tragic death. And we just went through a lot together, but we were a lot alike and we kept each other laughing, I guess was the main thing. We had like 38 years as besties I guess. And you're right. He was a force of nature. Phyllis and I were just talking about that a couple of nights ago. What a natural entertainer he was. He'd capture any room he was in. So talented. And it seemed to come natural. He didn't "act" for anybody. He was always himself, and warm and friendly, and of course hilarious. Such talent. Like you said, all those guys, Pat, Mike, Dale, Carter, Mikeska, Schwedler, Don Walker, Randy Tanner....all those guys Dickey played with were just top notch. Some great bands. I'm so lucky I was rolling tape, and I love getting to share it all......
I was friends with Dickey in the early 80s can you please tell me what happened to him?
@@mykicksif you were there when Rick died maybe you remember me. Kelly Hart. Dickey has been on my mind so much I wondered what happened to him.
Thank you! I was there…Pat was wearing my shirt haha!
So cool!
Yes Mike I knew him well. My husband Pat played with him for years and he and his ex wife spent time with us in Azle and we stayed with them in Austin. Claw Hammer and Cadillac Conley like you and Dickey were besties since 15. Do you have footage of Dickey and the Valentinos opening for Lynyrd Skinner at West Side Stories? The Fort Worth Cats? The Gigolos? The Ralph’s? I was friends with Mike and Linda Neal….Ray and Mary Kalvitz…Kid Daniel etc. So amazing that you have this archive. Not many people even know about that song Dickey sang but it has been in my head. Oh Pat played with Dot Vaeth too…
Hi Venessa. Wow, so you're Pat's wife. I'm so sorry for your loss. What a great guy. So I don't know how Phyllis & I never ran into you or got introduced. Good to hear from you. I know you've seen this because I'm pretty sure that Pat had a copy. But I already had worked on it as, per your request before I knew you were Mrs. Conley. Anyway, I also included the original DEMO version of it that we recorded at my house, before he'd ever played it live or for anyone else. We wrote some things together and I've got quite a bit of tape of our home recordings as well as their live club stuff & few songs they did in the professional studios. As much of that stuff that you mentioned, remarkably I don't have any of that stuff. I've got stuff I recorded on Dickey since he was 18. The FW Cats didn't have 9 lives, but one short one, and I never got to see or hear them. I've got some audio recordings from West Side Stories, but no video. A few snapshots I think. Didn't know about the Gigolos. The Ralphs....Never got to hear them, but Dickey used to bring Ralph to Houston with him and we were good friends. Didn't know those last 5 people you mentioned. But anyway, "Love Anne" is now posted here, and I'm about to put it on Dickey's FB page and Mother Blues FB page. I appreciate you're comments on this stuff, and really glad you enjoy it. Pat was a great guy! Oh, and I do have other versions of "LOVE ANNE". I've got a studio version, and at least 2 nice quality live club recordings of it.
Mike do have any recordings of Dickey singing you give me your love Ann?
Hi Venessa. Indeed I do. A song he wrote, himself. Now I haven't just yet committed it to a music video because I have probably several versions, and I've always known I would get around to sorting them out and judging which would be the best version to use. So now you've got me on that track, I'll do it! It may take me a couple of days to determine if I have a sufficiently good live video to use, OR if as usual, I'll find one where I only have audio and no picture. In that case I have to go searching for images to use to accompany the video, and then do all the editing. These things for me generally can take from about 3 hours up to 12 approximately, sometimes spread over 2 days. BUT, you've made my decision for me. I've been sitting here for the last hour, trying to pick and decide on which song to do next. So why not "Love Anne". Did you know Dickey very well? Obviously you're familiar with his music. So I'll consider it a special request, and it's the next up in line to create. Keep checking back over the next day or two and I'll have it up. I'll try to remember to let you know. But one way or another it'll be on my RUclips channel and on his Facebook page, and I'll definitely want you to see it. Thanks for the suggestion.
good job
Thanks man!
Mike I’m sure you know now that Pat Conley passed away. He fought hard to continue to be the last survivor for his sons. I’m so grateful you have this footage
Thanks you Vanessa. He was also a friend. You can see a whole lot more of Pat on my DICKEY FERGUSON fb page. Dickey & I were friends all the way from the early '70s. So I've kept great photos & videos and sound recordings of all his bands over all those years. It's nice that I'm able to share all this stuff, and that people like and appreciate it. That's great because I'll never run out of stuff, and I'll keep posting it as long as people enjoy it. Thanks for letting me know.....That Frat party was a weird party by the way... They tried to stiff the band and there was nearly a big fight, but I guess everything got sorted out.
I don’t do Facebook but Mike Gilbertson was Pats best friend young kids and his brother Dale

Good'un 😤☝Just Rockin!!! 🎸🎤🎸🎤🎸🥁
"Grats, bro! You followed thru and got something done, recorded, filmed, uploded. All that is a big achievement in some people's lives! It's got legs. Polish it up. Go for a studio sound. Keep working it.
Much appreciated! Thanks.
Good cover. Innovative, still true to the original!
Thanks a lot!
Wasn’t this written by Moon Martin?
Sure was.
This is so great. A party moment captured forever. I saw Dickey & The Valentinos in Lubbock, Fat Dawgs, 1986. My ears are still ringing.
Well how cool is that? I'm glad you let me know that. Dickey & I were best friends for 38 years. He passed away in 2009. But hey, check out the DICKEY FERGUSON facebook page. I manage it as a tribute to him and his fans & friends. We were together so long that I have oodles of stuff on tape of him. Videos, live shows, audio gigs, press kit stuff....all kinds of great Dickey stuff with all of his bands, BRAT, U.S. Kids, Dickey & the Valentinos & The Dickey Ferguson band. CHECK IT OUT, and thanks!
Köszönöm szépen!
Thank you!
I wanted to record this song too, but I cant get the bass sound correct I also got a german hofner ( cavern) lefthanded too haha. I tried but didnt work out yet. Nice hearing your recordings! Greets from musiclane fun studio , Holland
Thanks. It's nice to run across someone with the same passions I have about self-recording or home recording as an avocation. Your stuff is so clean. I've got a Hoffner bass knock off I bought several years ago on eBay for about $100. But I usually use my Squier Precision bass or my 5 string Samick bass. I don't have a lot of high end stuff. I just do what I can. I have a nice Stratocaster and a nice Telecaster. Those are my only name brand guitars. I have several off brand guitars. I did have a Chibson (Chinese Gibson) Les Paul custom made and it's a beautiful guitar, but I hardly play it. I do have a bottom line Martin acoustic that I like and use a lot. It's just fun to me to find a song that I like, which I can also play. I started multi-tracking in the mid-70's on a Teac reel to reel. Progressed from that over the years to a 4-track cassette recorder. I actually wore about 3 of those out over the years. Then I got a 16 Track Boss digital recorder which I love and have used a lot. I've had trouble with the learning curve of trying to record on my computer. I've tried a few times, but nothing really to show for it. The guys that I used to jam with and even played in a couple of bands with, what pretty much scattered to the winds. So I don't have humans to play with any more. So my hands have gotten so far out of playing shape that it's difficult to even pick up a guitar any more, plus I've developed a pretty bad tremor in my right arm and hand. So instead of playing, I've been using most of my available time to go back through my decades of tapes and turn them into videos. It's satisfying to still be creative with my music. Hopefully one of these days I can get back into some recording. But the videos are keeping me pretty busy. Thanks for the complements and I really enjoy your recordings too. Greetings from Houston, Texas.
Lovely!
Thanks.
Hi Mike sounds great haha. Its a nice hobby isn't it. Lots of work but nevertheless great hobby. I only realy cant make video's so to this day I work with only pictures. But the music counts. Great job! Keep up the good works. Greets from the musiclane fun studio💪💪💪
Thanks 👍
Nice version.
THANKS!
