Adventure touring: Why you should camp
I'm off for a few days of wild camping and adventure riding with some friends.
For me, camping is a big part of what puts the 'adventure' in adventure riding.
If you have never camped before or tried it and not enjoyed it, in this video I will try to convince you to give it a go.

Camera and Audio Setup for Adventure Riding Videos - KISS
Просмотров 3038 месяцев назад
Many people have asked me what camera and microphone setup I use to record my adventure riding videos. So this is a short explanation of my setup. My rule is to keep it very simple. That way it is quick and easy to use so you capture the footage. It is no use having fancy equipment that takes too long to set up. You'll miss the photo opportunity. The camera mounting clip I use is a Dango Design...

We set off for 2 weeks of wild camping on the Sweden TET (Trans Euro Trail). What kit did we find useful? What did we not use? What did we wish we had taken? You can download a FREE copy of our kitlist from my BuyMeACoffee site. There is no obligation to buy me a coffee, but I'd be delighted if you did.

TET Sweden (Part 3)

Four friends from Northumbria in the UK set off to ride the TET (Trans Euro Trail) through Sweden. We planned to complete the trip on small trail bikes, rather than bigger adventure bikes. And we planned to wild camp, using either our tents or the many shelters available throughout Sweden. This is the third and final part of the story of our adventure.

Is the KTM EXC and good as a long distance ADV bike?
Просмотров 6 тыс.Год назад
I've been trail riding on my KTM EXC450 for 7 years now. I get many comments that it is not a suitable bike for long distance adventure touring because it is unreliable and high maintenance. Yet here I am, enjoying the trails and wild camping.

In this video I am refurbishing my KTM wheels ready for my long distance trip on the Scandinavian TET. I fit new wheel bearings and dust seals, fit new brake disks, fit a new rear sprocket, fit new tyres and balance the wheels.
Best Lightweight Adventure Bike Setup

What is the best lightweight adventure riding setup? Ask the people who actually do it, rather than those trying to sell you gear. They will tell you what does and does not work. At a recent adventure camping weekend with friends I interviewed some of them about their choice of bike, accessories and luggage for long distance lightweight adventure riding.

You are really a group of good friends, stick together.
Hey friends, which sections did you ride?
Such a bugger. Had that happen to me. But I wasn't so lucky 😢
I have had every model of exc 4stroke since the 520, they are bullet proof ,the only issue I have come across is in the fuel pump motors on the injected ones , on my rally 450 I always take a spare fuel pump motor. As for oil changes this on goes for TOURING, it's been tested in a lab that 3000kms and 1000kms there was no real degradation of oil . But racing my 350exc I change after every race .
Hi, I have thought about getting the same bike for this purpose but I think the issue is getting the bike to the trails, what’s your thoughts do you live near trails, what is the bike like on the road ?
I agree 100%, I have the same bike and love it!
I'd be happy to give Brian £25 for his bike 😂😂 Great trip lads thanks for sharing.
Lightweight motorcycle not adventure
With 8 or more years of ownership, can you please elaborate on parts of the engine that had to be replaced due to wear off the part, or maintenance schedule in this period. As far as I understand, the people that use these bikes what they are made for, racing not longevity, need to overhaul the complete engine (pistons, bearings....etc...) which could lead to a costly affair. I'm trying to get an idea how this changes, replacing parts and costs, when you don't stress the engine.
I’ve had 28,000km dual sport on mine. I just replaced the clutch rubber dampers and basket was still in great shape. Same with the countershaft. Engine runs fine as well, only chain and sprockets so far, standard wear and tear like plastics, seat cover, bulbs.
@@tigerrider6711Kiwi Aaron Steinmann rode his 500 140,000 km around the world. First head tear down at 60,000 km + and full rebuild at 100,000 km +. No major problems at all.
Dahlia Burgs
what route you doing a recognised sandy lane garage in live just down road
what ktm you got ?
hooligans 😂 great vid ive just joined the trf
USA rider. I am debating KTM 500 EXC or now 450. So based on your real world riding and others, what in miles is your oil change interval and valve check? My buddy has a couple KTM 500. He has yet to do valve check in 113 hours. Apparently some feel doesn't need a check unless you start feeling engine run differently. Any thoughts? Thanks. Timely post.
Just checked my valves at 120 hrs/8000km and one exhaust valve has changed by 0.01 mm in 5 years. Don’t waste your time. Maybe leave it to 250 hrs +.
Hi i am considering buying the same bike .I have a 525exc which is pretty smooth on the road. How does the 450 feel .Is it always "hunting" on the EFI or pretty smooth(seat nonwithstanding!) cheers from Greece
You have a yellow dot on the tyre indicating the lightest point of the tyre, this should line up with the valve as the valve is the heaviest weight on the wheel. This in turn means you don't need to use such heavy weights to balance. You could also spray the tyres and inner tubes with silicon spray easing fitting tyres and bedding of the tubes, no need to deflate and reinflate.
Excellent 👌👍
I hope Brian bought you all plenty of beers for your patience and kindness! Someone tell him about the 7P’s!! Good videos, well done chap. I’m hopefully doing the trip in September.
over the years Ive had a 520 exc, a 450 exc, a 300 xcw (still have for single track) and now a 500 excf and all bikes have been reliable. KTM really knows how to build a great performing bike with top components. I agree, the main reason a KTM, or any bike really is reliable, is to stay on top of maintenance. Great video, thanks!
Simon, that looked like a whole lot of fun! I’m really glad I discovered this dirt bike channel of yours…it’s the original spirit of adventure riding just like we did in the ‘70s on way less capable bikes like my DT250 and my mate, Michael’s Elsinore 250 and camping wild! Cheers mate. Take care and ride safe👏🏍️💪👍🇿🇦
You must have the price of the Øresund bridge wrong. It is 260 danish kroner, which is about 29 GBP
Price is from my receipt
That Rabaconda machine is a revelation! It makes changing a tyre in your garage a doddle…I want one! Great video Simon 💪🏍️🇿🇦🍺😎
Hi Simon, I’ve just discovered this channel…secretive bugger aren’t you? 😂 What I love about this channel is guys my age, on dirt bikes re-enjoying their youth! Brilliant 💪🏍️🍺🇿🇦
Hi Richard. You've caught me! 😁
Excellent and very informative video, thanks a lot!🤩
A tip for if your starter goes out: Put another bike back tire to back tire with yours, put them on the center stand if you have one. Otherwise use a stump, log, rock or even your helmet to elevate the rear tire. Start the functioning bike and put in gear and give some revs to get about 10-20 kph (10 mph ish). Hold the clutch on your bike and put in 1st or 2nd gear and dump the clutch. Voilà, your bike is now started with minimal effort ☺
Stay away from these two they come with a lot of baggage😁
I’m shocked you can get camp gear on it !! I ride a 701 when I need take my camp gear. I’m curious about your baggage set up. (oh changing the oil… I quite like doing it! It’s a joy !) … I agree with your comments.
i’ve ridden them on heaps of tours … Portugal and Morocco. Over the last years. I agree with you. They are very reliable, easy to ride. Your comments are spot on.
Able to do the long distances on roads?
I am a firm believer of al the things you just mentioned! I love adv wild camping. It's the best!
I like camping. But the older you get the greater the need for immediate toilet access. Nobody talks about it.
You need a "Night Bottle"
😂😂 take along a small garden trowel, but dig the hole early! 🙈😂👍🇿🇦
The biggest advantage for me when I camp is that I dont have to plan where to stop. If I find a good place I just put up my tent.
Experienced camper here. I sleep much better when I'm out moto camping in the woods with my air mattress and sleeping bag (and fresh scandinavian air) than being at home.
Good stuff!
Am i an official badass if I do this on a scooter? 😎
Hell yeh!
@@offthetarmac4884 I'll do a little test and run a stretch of the TET that is near me, a full day trip :)
I bought my KTM 450 in 2005 it as needed very little mechanical work and it is still going strong it still wheel stands in every gear no problem, I've adjust the valves twice, in 2021 I had the head rebuilt other than regular service I have no problem but like all machines some of them are just lemons does not matter what they are if you get a good one don't worry about criticism, because every bike every machine has its problems.
Great way to end this series. btw next time you make a breakdown of the trip/stuff, show a picture of the worn tires ;-) ( gives ppl a lot better idea of how much lilltel it was) did any of you guys put olie ob drive chain after the trip ?? :)
Now that what i call offroad trip ❤ Butt best part was the teamplay. Can´t buy that for money.!!
This is gold! I love my Aprilia Tuareg 660 but the more I ride off-road the more I want the smallest and lightest bike possible. Although my road and race bikes are all KTM I’ve shied away from KTM off-road due to the fact that many of their engines seem far too twitchy for low speed maneuverability. Th 450 may be an ideal choice that I’m going to look into. How do you feel about the 350 EXC?
I've not ridden the 350, but a friend has one and he does very well on it.
Ooh submarine - well killed in time though! Nicely saved.
Well at least you didn't drown it like my friend did last year. We saw his Husqvarna disappear under the waves... 😅😂
Don't want to be rude but it is you, Peter, Brian and a guy named Sh*t load?
Iv450 rsf motor 2005 been rebuilt a couple of times obviously still goes extremely hard but still an interesting video ,but you should have done your plug they are a real pain in the backside a stupid as the air filter great video man enjoyed watching cheers always like to see new things👍🇦🇺🦘
Old husqvarna at its best ... omfg ... btw old ktm´s are the same lol
great thanks :)
The 450 motor is a Husky motor and the starter should have been available from a husky dealer in Sweden.
Its a BMW motor
@@offthetarmac4884 they are all derived from Rptax engine. Which is now owned KTM
Thanks for an entertaining and well narrated TET story. I'll be doing the same route this summer. Now I'm properly inspired!
Thanks ! Very interesting. Struggling with my setup at the moment (wind noise), I can't wait for the video on Songs from the saddle. Have a nice 2024 season.
The much longer video looking at all my camera and audio gear will be on my Songs From The Saddle channel on Saturday 4th May
Thx for Camp spots… gr8 video…
Hello there, i really liked the video! This summer i'm going to Sweden too, what app did yoy guys use to find these shelters?
Sorry, I can't remember the name of the app. It was my friend Shiplo who had it on his phone and used it, so I never actually used it.
Shelter Map
Off-road I’m not too sure about this they don’t look like they’re knobby enough to handle off-road
