    Hi I just wanted to say you’re such an amazing inspiration!!! I really appreciate you sharing your journey because it really does give hope to adult skaters like me. I wanted to be a figure skater when I was 14 but unfortunately didn’t really have the opportunity to. Now I’m 22 getting back into it. I even work at an ice rink which is so fun :) You’ve improved so much in such a relatively short amount of time. It just proves again that you don’t have to start skating at 5 to be good. Keep up the awesome work and imagine how good you’ll be in future <3

      Thank you for such kind words! It’s motivating to hear from you too! It’s definitely never too late, and there’s no point in saying so or thinking so. I stopped uploading my progress because it feels so slow or it feels like such an up and down. But I guess that’s just the way figure skating goes. Don’t give up and just think, you’ll be lifetimes better than me by the time you get to the age that I started!

    Cool! I didn't know you were from Pasadena - I lived there for many years and my best friend growing up was part of that club when she still skated. Started watching your channel a while back but hadn't seen anything in a long time - seems like you have made some lovely improvement! Good for you! Too bad about the sit spin, but it happens. Everything else was lovely. Also, are you Japanese? Seems like I heard some Japanese there, but it was kind of hard to tell. Anyway, congratulations on your performance!! Keep up the good work.

      Awe Yaye! You’re so sweet, thank you so much. And wait, I love that you guys lived in Pasadena too 😊 Pasadena is lovely. It reminds me of Tokyo as far as being so quaint. Yes, I’m half Japanese and I used to live in Japan. I always speak Japanese with my adult skating buddy in the video so it just kind of came out. But I was too shy to put subtitles so I was just hoping no one would notice. Haha. Ironic, I know, for someone RUclips-channel-ing. Thank you for saying hello 🫶 And about not posting in a while: TBH I’ve been frustrated with my “axel progress” maybe I’ll try to make a second video on that but basically I had a year and a half of off/on/yes but like no with that and it was that and doing competitions. So I just posted comp videos instead of improvement videos. :-/ figure skating is so hard 😭

      @@salsatosalchow7294 Really?? That's so cool. I'm half Japanese, too :) What a coincidence. My mom came from Japan when she was 19 and met and married my dad in the states. I've been to Japan several times (almost all of my mom's family is there) but never lived there myself. So I am also not fluent in the language, either. My mom unfortunately never taught me, so all I know is what I studied for a bit in school and picked up on my own. Very hard to learn if you are not forced to use it! Anyway.....cheer up about the axel. It is of course a difficult jump - I believe you will get there. I would love to learn to skate myself, but given my age and current circumstances, it is probably not in the cards for me - so I will just cheer for you instead :) I applaud you for all of your hard work making it so far in adult figure skating. I am sure it is very difficult, and also very expensive!

      The part about hard to learn if you don’t have to lose it-boy that’s for sure. Most of my life I’ve been up and down with my Japanese because when I’m not living or working there I never use it. That’s why I’m so grateful for my Japanese skating friends to speak with!!❤ just about as hard to maintain as skating I guess. At the moment it’s still working as an outlet for me but I can’t predict how long I’ll be doing it. Trying not to think about it because everyone has their opinions about age and skating and trying not to be tossed by opinions :-)

      It’s super crowded at the moment because it’s summer time! During summer and during the holiday season it’s like a mass of people. Since we’re here… btw, I’m having to rebuild the way I axel because no matter how many times I’ve landed it, the technique isn’t something i can just ‘go to’ like with my other single jumps that work. Like if I speed up a 1F, I know what to do to make it work. I’ve never had that with he axel. I *think* I’ve found it… 9 months after I first landed it in this video. I really hope I have. Because I’ve thought I found it many times this year…. And it always goes on vacation.

      I was always told to always kick to the right. You’re headed left but always face and kick right, and once you’ve put all effort into kicking up, then air position. It might feel stuck for a bit, but it’s like the number one thing that’s always anchored me (if I can say I ever had an anchor with the axel). The other thing that help me the most is you can a waltz jump to back scratch motion (on the ground).

    So I just found this last night and I'm very impressed, congrats! You seem to have gotten your axel much sooner than me! I had it for the full month of September (not consistent but landing at least 1 per session), then lost it for 3 months, then it came back on January 2nd and seems to have stuck around for 4 weeks now 😬😬 How many cycles did you go through? Where are you now with the axel?

    • @salsatosalchow7294
      @salsatosalchow7294 2 года назад

      Cycles... I definitely understand that...!!! I can’t even count how many.... I ended up over working my back muscles somehow with the axel motion, and in December I had a muscle injury; followed by the biggest colossal fall I’ve ever had, followed by getting sick. December was a mess. I kept fighting for my axel though, so I also feel the “at least 1 per session.” January has gone from 1 per session, to a handful per session - but my goal has been to be able to just axel at will. My axels since the many issues in December also haven’t felt as neat as some of the ones from this video. But then actually today(!) I landed my first attempt, I landed more than I fell/two footed, and had one really good one that finally felt as good as the ones from October! Today was the first time I started to feel like I can land at will. (Not to to jinx anything. 😅) It’s like I’m narrowing in on the technique since September/October. I feel so much closer to really understanding how to land them consistently. Of course, it was only just last week when I had 1 day that I just couldn’t do it whatsoever 😅😑💦 I also started putting more focus on my off ice exercises of finding my right sided in the air. I feel like that’s helped a lot. I’ve contemplated doing a video on that because I invented a lot of exercises that helped a lot. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @salsatosalchow7294
      @salsatosalchow7294 Год назад

      Thank you so much! That means a lot!! I haven’t met anyone else in person (yet) who learned to axel as an adult. I’m still looking for them tho!!!! I definitely plan on doubles, but the axel since this video went through huge up and down growing pains. It just couldn’t ever have it consistent. That’s why they always fell apart in my competitions. My coaches didn’t want me to move on until I got it consistent. They took it out of my program and I was able to focus on my program and axel separately and FINALLY I got the axel consistent! So reluctantly…I understand why they said don’t work on doubles until the axel is consistant…. Skating is like a never ending mountain…!!!

  • @natsskates
    @natsskates 2 года назад

    I can relate so much... except I went through at least 5 cycles of getting back and losing my off ice axel. When I was losing my axel, it looked pretty similar to yours when you lost it. It's like there's a switch in your brain which gets turned on and off, and you can't control it! And I'm not even sure that I'm done with these cycles! It's so frustrating ugh. Good for you for sticking with it, and it looks like your coach's advice to reset your brain helped. Keep it up!

      Hey I was just thinking about you... I visited one of you videos because I was looking for your lutz footage (because I’m so envious of your natural outside edge). LOL OMG.... (went through 5 cycles of off an on off ice axel).... so like... about that. 🤦🏻‍♀️💦💦😑💨 I’d love to be able to do like a delayed off ice axel. Where you can distinctly see the jump straight up, and then snap. I feel like a lot of my crazy jumps that feel otherworldly-awful happen because I’m trying to turn too early before jumping up, so then I projectile my life into some ungodly direction.

      @@salsatosalchow7294 hey sorry for the late reply haha! Thank you for your kind words about the Lutz, I really do love that jump and I find that the outside edge gives it an oomph on takeoff; definitely prefer it to the flip, my flip is kind of stale and lifeless lol. Yeah that axel, you never know what it decides to do. I'm currently on my millionth cycle of having the off ice axel, and my second time having the on ice axel. Praying the on ice axel is here to stay the second time around 😩

    This was an interesting video. Now I’d like to find more with people’s thoughts on getting to the point of being comfortable on the ice but I suspect it will not be easy to find others. Just this past week I felt suddenly quite comfortable and at ease on the ice. I’d gotten close to that feeling just before my rink closed for maintenance all November, and it took all of December and this far into January to get back. I think my feeling of comfort is on a different scale than what you are speaking about in the video. I look forward to reaching that level eventually. For me, currently, it just means not feeling like tonnes of nerves and aches need to be worked out of my system for 15-45 minutes before I feel I can smoothly do anything decently. If that makes sense? As far as the “don’t die!!!” thoughts I haven’t had them in a while if just doing power stroking, cross rolls and such, or even Mohawk sequences, but I totally still have it with things like the waltz 3s, any 3 turns with steps (ugh!,) and anything with toe picks involved. ETA: Actually, I got past the “don’t die” for outside 3s today!

    • @salsatosalchow7294
      @salsatosalchow7294 2 года назад

      I thought I responded to this, but maybe I only thought about the response and never got around to writing anything! Sorry! I was thinking how, I’m glad I made this video when I did, because the more time goes by, I really can’t remember to such specific detail-in-time, how it felt to feel to be so uncomfortable on ice. I mean, I still remember specific thoughts during moments-like warming up on a freestyle session with a bunch of really good skaters, and wondering how it must feel to be able to just flow powerfully right into your edges without feeling like, “I’m gonna eat it any second.” Lately the ‘don’t die’ feeling comes when I’m doing much more complicated things... mostly when I’m doing programs, actually. So I guess the fret feeling is definitely relative to what you’re doing against your current skating skill. It’s not a constant thing always in the back of my mind, but it still comes up at times!

      Omg really? Come say hi if you see me! I’m mostly at Pasadena at the moment. A lot of my videos were during the pandemic, so I was all over LA.

      @@ggrretchen7296 I used to go to the valley rink in the super early part of the lockdown! Until about end of July when they had to close again. They probably reopened soon after, but I went off to Ontario then. Lol extreme opposite location but I guess I’m in the middle of the two. Do you think you’ll compete this year? Maybe we might run into each other!?

    Thanks for this, very inspiring. I was practicing and just about ready to do this before the pandemic and trying to get myself motivated to do it again. Contrary to most I like the backwards stuff actually. But I’m weird. My forward crosses are the normal way my backward crosses Re counter clockwise I don’t know which way to spin etc. and now I have a broken foot, off ice doing nothing in particular which is annoying but hopefully I’ll be able to skate again soon!! Thank you for sharing your journey!! You have great posture which I struggle with!

      Thanks for the posture comment. I actually struggle with it too!! I definitely prefer going backwards too. I think that’s most people because there is no toe pick and no rocker in that direction.

    Hey girl, loved this, I'm going to start filming my progress too I just started in August. How old are you if you don't mind me asking? I'm just really intrigued because I'm 23 and want to know what hope I've got just starting now looool. Lots of love from London ❤️

      You’re 23? Oh it’s over, you’re way too.... 😜....10 years ahead of me! I realized the other day, I’m the perfect age to have started skating, because this is the age when it arrived into my life❤️ Yes, do videos!!! I can’t wait to see our progress!!!!!! I was secretly playing a game against any adult skating progress videos I found, to see if I could beat whatever progress rate out there. Lol Just for fun. So I hope you beat whatever I reached!!! 😄 There is this one girl (from Australia??) who... I cant even relate to her progress.... she said she got axels and doubles within her first year and no athletic/acrobatic background of any kind...🤷🏻‍♀️ Anyway🙏🙏
