Here for very specific reasons.
Korngold: Symphony, Op. 40 – Rudolf Kempe & Münchner Philharmoniker (1972 World Premiere Recording)
Rudolf Kempe, conductor
Münchner Philharmoniker
Recorded 27 November 1972
Produced by and remastered with supervision of George Korngold
Erich Wolfgang Korngold: Symphony, Op. 40
00:00 - 1. Moderato, ma energico
14:11 - 2. Scherzo: Allegro molto
23:20 - 3. Adagio: Lento
38:21 - 4. Finale: Allegro gaio
This is a curious one. Many have written effusively on the strengths of this world premiere recording. It is regarded as a gold standard against which all other recordings of the Symphony are compared, yet I can't shake off the feeling that it's been utterly abandoned by the industry. It has long been deleted from the catalog not once but twice, by RCA and Varèse Sarabande, with no promise of return....

Recorded in 1972.
Very powerful music, indeed. Like Shostakovitch and Prokofiev, Korngold composed film scores. The difference is that he stayed in that field. Wonderful conducting. Hoomeyow!!
A Brilliant Symphony. I cant rave enough how important this is. I have this recording which i bought in 1988. Captivated then. Captivates now! This Symphony is a GIANT with a Giant Conductor at the helm. ❤🎉😊
And Kempe? Too interesting!
The first recording of this symphony and still the best. Fabulously exciting!
In the day of its premier "the musical world" -at that time- found it "Old Fashioned"... I just say: sad people totally deaf...A remarkable Symphony by a true genius Erich Wolfgang Korngold, the Last Prodigy...
The musical world may have been expecting 12-tone serialism, which I find very cold, sort of like techno music. Hoomeyow!!
Wonderfully dramatic. This is why Korngold was such a great drama composer.
This is wonderful. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much - this is INDEED the reference recording! I srill have the LP and CD but it is great to be able to listen to it now when not at home … I strongly hope Dutton Vocaion will be able to prduce a hybrid CD/SACD (hopefully from the Original Master - if it sill exists), They already did »Tote Stadt« (the Leinsdorf recording) and several of the RCA Classic Film Scores …
If UMG is listening (it owns Varèse Sarabande, if I'm not mistaken), it really needs to reissue this recording. Surely, the company can exploit some people's hunger for historical recordings, and is this not a historical recording of the first order? Major labels are so stupid, and the fact that this hasn't been permanently restored to the catalog is all the proof you need to know just how stupid they are.
Thank you!
