What is that track right before the "am stereo" announcement at the very beginning? I've been looking for that track for the longest! Other than that, the fondest memories listening to 1580 KDAY back in the day. I'm from the class of 88'!

Damm Its a trip to hear these mixes because like some of you i would stay up all night just to record these mixes. It gave me inspiration to start djn in the late 80s. I just recently got some equipment to start back up at home for a hobby, and now I find myself trying to replicate that same mixing style. KDAY mixing for life, never grew out of the 80s when it came to music. I have practically everything from all the elecro funk, to bass to hip hop original vinyl from back in the day. Old Scholl for life. DJ Calavera. Check my channel out RP ruclips.net/video/nHkqOoB4AD4/видео.html

This is also an era where DJ's had mad skills. No beat counters, no drag and click, you literally played the beats in your mind to calculate the bpm for the next song. KDAY was also the place that gave birth to Bobby Jimmy. What started out as a joke between breaks and definitely after KING News with that fuckin deep ass voice that shook your speakers when he gave the traffic news. Russ Parr or Rapsur went off and recorded some of the most funniest titles and lyrics as Bobby Jimmy.

Hooooooly crap! I used to record the KDAY Saturday night Mixmaster shows as a 13 year old back in 87'. At one point I had dozens of tapes. All got lost but I still have this very same broadcast. I don't have a tape player anymore but I remember the set of mixes being the exact. I played the hell out of it. KDAY back in the 80's was damned cool!

I think of qbert as such a new school DJ because of his relevance to this day. So it’s really strange to think that this dude was performing in 1990. And it’s even stranger when you think about how he was probably practising and starting out back in the mid to late 80’s

This mix is probably more like 84 or 85. Kday first featured pre recorded mixes by uncle jams army (Egyptian lover & DJ Bobcat) & DR Dre. Egypt went on tour, Dre dre got to busy and in came Tony G in early 85.

One of my most Epic Memories of a live performance ever was the crowd straight gettin Hype as FUCK to Joe Goin' OFF on the ones and twos after him and Rodney O finished doing some of their tracks live back at Samerika Hall in my hometown of Carson (this same year). Joe didn't need any gimmicky shit for his sets. But then you had other fools like DJ Hamburger Helper, who was pretty alright and everything, I'll give him so-so cred for that, but would try to hype up his set by doin' shit like takin' off his Reebok shoe and scratchin' with that shit while his homey was on the MIC trying to make like it was a big deal, Hehe. You know... and others who'd be all beat-juggling and trying to incorporate behind the back manipulations while turning a rotation with their body. Shit like that Man..fools have no idea how much more insanely easy it is to rock the fuck out of a set with Modern Tech these days. To anyone reading this, when you get a chance, for shits and giggles on a decent system, with Vinyl, Play Planet Rock forwards... then by hand play ShyD's Gotta be Tough backwards beat-matching... and then look over at your Sub ;) EDIT: Oh yeah, also seeing Rodney and Joe as Casa Camino Real during the time period of "These are my Beats" with Egyptian Lover. That set was hype too! And Oh Yeah... Thank Heaven for KDAY on the bus going to school in the morning!

Just the fact that Joe did this on those clunky large Numark mixers is amazing enough. I think using the line switch lost him points at the DMC's against Cash Money. I remember those things constantly breaking off too lol

      - The way Aladdin uses the line switch scratch and transforming on Rock The Bells at the ENDING of "Aladdin's On A Rampage", you CANNOT duplicate that on a crossfader. Listen real closely, you'll see what i mean. But u have to hear it on the "Aladdins on a Rampage" song.

Omg. Dis use mixed records also, while they are doing a mix. Sooo for maybe 3 minutes you will hear a mix record. However I was standing next to All the kday crew egyptian lover and Tony g and others I can assure you they are the best. Live radio plus 10000 live people at la sports arena is no time for a record skip or a nervous shaky hand backyard dj, or Latin mix. Egypt was so smooth he could from records to 808 Roland while the people kept dancing! He would hold hold up the records over his head! You didn't see that over the radio my friend, you had to be their.dj Mwalk, bobcat, dre.

Joe Cooley had no respect for the record he was mixing and that is what made him the greatest DJ in that era. The DJ must control the music not go along with it. #boss #business #science
