Ups and Downs of Watching Wildlife | Blue tit nest update and more...
Now, I've got some good news and some bad news for you.
When watching wildlife, the truth is it doesn't always do what you have planned. Nature often has a mind of it's own.
Let's start with the bad news.
You may remember I showed you the blue tit nest box, and how the nest was built and one egg had been laid. Well, there were 9 eggs laid in total. All 9 chicks hatched. It started well with both parents feeding them. However, there's been a problem in the nest. Over the space of a few days the chicks began to die. It's hard to know the reason, but it may have been caused by disease in the nest box. Even the parent blue tits knew there was something wrong so didn't come back to feed them. T...

Learn about the secret life of toads and their facinating behaviour. I spotted this toad one evening in late summer. Toads can be found in damp areas and near water, and a good time to see them is at night as that's when they are out feeding. Common toads are amphibians. They breed in ponds during the spring and spend much of the rest of the year feeding in woodland. They hibernate over winter ...

Install a Bird Box Camera to Watch Baby Birds in Nest | Step by Step Guide
Thanks for the video. I'm going to try to plant some after watching this.
Thanks, hope it went well!
Should I seal them In wax paper then put them in air tight containers. Or no? Thanks
When putting them in the fridge should the tissue be wet? Dry? Damp?
You should have drilled those holes before drilling in the screws. Drilling holes will stop the wood from splitting. I
Nice job.
most funny thing is when they shuffle in empty box during their early visits , don't you have footage of that?
That's really interesting behaviour. Thanks for sharing. No, I don't have footage of that. 😃👍
I had this happen when a pair of great tits moved into a nesting box I put up. They had built a nest there the year before, but nothing further happened until they raised their first brood there this year. With the box being fastened to a wall of our house, we could hear the tapping from indoors. It continued for hours per day, for a week or so. As I didn't have a camera set up, I had no idea what was going on, so just assumed they were putting up bookshelves.
Thanks, that's very interesting! With a camera inside it's always fascinating to see what the birds are getting up to - perhaps putting up bookshelves as you say 😂👍
Hi, I'm hoping to make one of these and gift to my kids' kindergarten. Can I please have the lengths of posts, etc I've downloaded the plans, but it's tricking to work out the total post length and volume of flat material. I'm hoping to do this in the next few weeks as part of NZs brid count. Please help 🙏 ❤
Hello, thanks for your message and sorry for the slow reply. Great to hear you are wanting to build a bird table. The length of the main post you will need is 1.5 metres x 75mm x 75mm . Then the board you will need is approx 1.2 by 0.3 metres. You'll need a thinner post 2.4 metres long x 50mm x50mm, and lastly a plank of wood 75mm x 1 metre. Hopefully that helps. The measurements should be on the second page of the instructions but this should give you the total of what you need. Hope it goes well 😃👍
I think the tit likes the box but its too shallow. When you look at tit nesting videos they like to build up lot of nest material for the eggs. So maybe construct one where the camera is bit higher and has more space for the nest and the birds. 🤷♂
Thanks, yes good idea. I have actually tried in later boxes to give them more room. It also allows you to see the entrance hole as well! 😃👍
Hi. Thanks for the video. We put a bird box up a couple of years ago. No interest until last year when a pair of blue tits took a liking to it, in and out during late April and May then activity stopped. Waited till September to have a look and there were four eggs there. Cleaned the box later in the year and put it back up, again lots of activity April and May, going in with nesting material and at the end of May early June with what appeared to be food. No activity for almost two weeks now, never heard any chicks chirping. I’m hoping they have hatched and fledged but don’t want to look inside the box just yet in case they are still there. Do you know what the latest is for them to hatch? Again thanks for the video, keep up the good work Best regards Chris (UK)
Thanks Chris, glad you liked the video and really interesting to hear about the birds in your garden. I've heard that late May is when some might start building nests, and from what I've read it could be that in years when the emergence of caterpillars is delayed, it's an advantage to nest out of sync with the rest of the crowd. Perhaps that might help to explain why you had eggs in September! All the best 😃👍
Thanks for this video, it's two years old but I came here to research fledging. We were lucky to have 4 chicks survive up until yesterday. The box is now empty and I'm not sure what happened, where are the chicks, will they return, etc. There are some very good pointers in this video about predators, and looking for clues on/ around the nest for signs of predation. I'll take another look. Fingers crossed mine all fledged safely
Hello, thanks for your comment. That's great you had 4 chicks leave the nest. Yes, hopefully they will continue to all survive. Glad you liked the video- I had 11 chicks fledge last year. Here is a video about it, if you would like to see it as well: ruclips.net/video/CoTdubepJrk/видео.htmlsi=OYG4eIbJtR1sABI5 Unfortunately this year all our blue tit chicks died in the nest, which was possibly to do with a lot of wet weather and caterpillars being washed from the trees, which made it hard for the parents to find food.
Hello, we had one today who looked like it was nearly ready to fledge, he fell out and a cat attacked him. Sounds silly but we are devastated. We are fairly sure there are chicks in there that died. After nesting season, should we remove these or leave alone? Thanks :)
Hello, thanks for your comment. Sorry to hear about the chick that was attacked. That is really sad. With the chicks that have died in the nest, you will need to leave them in there until after the nesting season is over. It is recommended you clean out your bird box around September - December time. I made this video gives some advice around that: ruclips.net/video/Dfw7Bxhm_OM/видео.htmlsi=h71ZnS23czwnbj6s Hope it helps 😃👍
Where do the ones that’s didn’t survive go? 😢
Hello, thanks for commenting. The parents often try to get the dead chicks out of the nest, but sometimes that can be difficult so we saw that the parents would try to move them into one corner of the nest box away from the remaining chicks - most likely to prevent disease from spreading.
@@WildlifeBox we had 7 chicks but only 1 is left but one only passed few days ago so its still there unfortunately and the other has disappeared
I was hoping to find out what happens once the fledgling leaves the nest box. Does it try to return to its shelter in those first few vulnerable days? It fledged yesterday in the sunshine but there’s been downpours of rain since. I can’t see it anywhere, though there’s still unfledged chicks in the nest being fed by both parents.
Thanks for your comment. I think the chicks often try to find cover somewhere and then the parents will come and feed them. This is certainly what we found with our chicks that fledged. Last year we had 11 chicks fledge, but I only saw 1 or 2 of them after they left the nest, which indicates they are good at hiding and waiting for the parents to feed them 👍
Thank you. I had no idea, that I had to clean the box out. The person who made it, hasn't left anywhere to open it at the back. It's just a solid box with the hole for the Blue tits to get in 😊
We had a box on the side of the porch, I kept hearing this tapping sound and eventually realised it was bluetits pecking at the entrance hole, unfortunately they never moved in. However as I type we have a brood in the back garden box chirping away as the parent(s) work hard to keep the chicks fed. Should be at least another week before they fledge.
Thanks for your comment. That's great you've had interest in both boxes. It sounds like they were investigating your first box. All the best for the chicks fledging - very exciting! 😃👍🐦
Ups and downs indeed! Sorry about the Blue Tits but happy for you about the Foxes. A few months ago I put up a 4 hole terrace nest box on a fence post behind our Weigela bush and set up an IP camera on it. However in the high winds of late Feb / early March the fence got damaged, the nest box terrace came down, and the camera got damaged. Due to family health issues and other commitments I've only today managed to get it back up (had to replace fence panels first). Too late for any avian occupants this year probably but I'm hoping to get the camera back online this week. Keep up the good vids buddy. 👍👍👍
Thanks for your encouragement, as always, Graham! 😃 Well done for sorting out your terrace camera (and the fence!). Will be very interesting to see what you capture. Perhaps sparrows as they like to nest together? 😃👍
Sad story about the blue tits. I know how you must feel. My box had seven blue tits and I lost four when the woodpecker decided to take them. I decided although not ideal I had to do rescue work and fitted a metal plate to stop the rest from being taken. Fortunately this did not seem to worry them too much so the three left are doing well. I have recorded the whole story since they were eggs so soon the job of editing it for my channel.
Thanks, yes it is hard when chicks are taken. I had considered putting a metal plate around the entrance to prevent woodpeckers however we don't tend to see many around here and I found the bluetits liked to peck around the entrance hole themselves. Great that you filmed the whole story in your nest - hope the editing job goes well 😃👍
Awwwwww so sad :( ......As said, I had the same thing last year
Thanks, yes it was sad. Hope your bluetits are continuing to do well 😃👍
I don't have a camera in my box but today I think I'm an uncle! The activity of my bluetits has become frantic today with a bird entering and leaving about every 4 or 5 minutes! So happy:) Last year I was so sad when a nesting pair deserted the nest and I found tiny skeletons when I cleaned it out. I can't describe how heart broken I felt :( fingers crossed for this brood!
That's great news, and that sounds like a very good sign that the adult birds are entering the nest so frequently 😃 All the best for a successful brood 😃👍
It's so cool to see thank you so much 🐦💕
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it 😃👍🐦
Nice explanation. I’ve got two boxes too with cameras and I also made a personalized box (a weird looking birdbox) which stands alone at my garden.
Thank you! Glad to hear I'm not the only one with a weird looking birdbox! Hope you get to see lots of activity in your boxes
Nice one Will. I'm reasonably familiar with OBS due to using it regularly for live streaming church services. I did also temporarily have it set up at home for a couple of network cameras in the garden, but sadly I've had some hardware issues which I've not had chance to resolve yet, so both cameras are currently offline. Definitely a perfectly reasonable way to go though for anyone tech savvy enough to handle the initial setup. 👍🤓👍
Thanks Graham, yes it's a great bit of software! Hope you manage to get the hardware issues sorted on your cameras soon
My blue tit is a female she does alot of pecking of an evening when she's home for the night creating a dent. She will only pecking 1 spot and its damaging the box quite alot I'd love to know what she's trying to do.
If you're looking for another DIY project, check out my how to build a birdhide video: ruclips.net/video/XoCU237XX14/видео.htmlsi=YnY44YPIO9XWajwO
Straight forward instructions thanks for this easy build, However where possible paint all bare wood before assembly!! And on the feeding base its a good idea to have edging with gaps at the corners to drain away rain and after washing the platform!!Or as in my feeder there are half inch holes, The roof supports are critical in my opinion as size determines what birds visits your table as a rule of thumb the higher the supports the larger the birds, Which is a nuisance as my preference are small singing birds such as Robin's, Blackbirds, and all the tits, Pigeons, And Magpies can literally take over and hoard the feeder for hours denying all other birds of food, I hope for anyone of thinking of building there own bird table finds my tips useful!!! 🤔😉🇬🇧👍
Thanks for your comment and glad you found it helpful. Great tips there - I'm sure people will find them useful 😃👍
Myself and a friend have required some land that we intend to start up a wildlife photography business. We're talking about building a bird hide. I came across your video..your design looks perfect for us it will be free standing though.
Thanks for your comment. That sounds like a really exciting project - I would like to do something like that one day! Glad you found the video useful and hope it helps in building your own bird hide 😃👍
We had the wren and robin nest in our garden last year, hope they do it again this year❤

@@WildlifeBox Thank you. I'll follow the video. I've had a camera for years and every spring regret that I didn't install it. I'll be saving your video as a watch later and favourite.
A nice design, as Graham commented, genius to have a removable roof. No doubt the recipients love them. Hope you and your family had a nice Christmas.
Thanks very much Jay, yes they were very well received 😃 Hope you and your family had a good Christmas too and have a great 2024 with lots of wildlife encounters!
