    I now have two of their Flex units. They both have what appears to be a defect in the cover that could compromise the seal. I would have thought that since I sent pictures of the defect they would have been careful to send the replaced without the defect. Bottom line here is. Keep the original packaging. You may need it.

    I've installed and used both a Touch 50 and 70. My T50 had issues with a 30' passive cable. Of all things the colors used in the display were wrong or washed out looking. Otherwise okay. I switched to a Monoprice active cable and everything worked perfectly. I also installed a T70 starting with another Monoprice active cable which I believe is exactly the same as the first one. Unfortunately, sometimes when I touch the T70 to wake the screen up it starts but quickly goes black. No response after that. I can unplug & replug the HDMI cable and it wakes up and returns to normal operation. I've not yet solved this issue. (And yes, the source is the Cerbo and the display is at the T70.) Any thoughts for a next attempt at a fix?

    I believe he's incorrect about going too big on the regulator. Just because you have the capacity doesn't mean you'll use it. One of the pitfalls of using propane is that outside temperature and percentage of fill drastically affect the max BTU output of the tanks. For instance, the 100 pound tank I considered, was capable of 280,000 BYUs at 60⁰F ambient temperature, and with full tanks. However, the same tank han a max output of 28,000 BTUs at 0⁰F and when the tank is 20% full. So, you really need to look up the chart for your tank BTUs vs temperature and fill. It is technically called vaporization rate, but I found more good resources by using common language.

    • @DemonicAnimatronic
      @DemonicAnimatronic 11 дней назад

      Nope, not incorrect. And not specific to propane, any regulator needs to be sized according to use. For a simple explanation see www.beswick.com/resources/the-basics-of-pressure-regulators/#:~:text=A%20regulator%20with%20an%20oversized,and%20may%20cause%20excessive%20droop. As was stated in the video. The bigger the acting orifice the more flow for a given movement percentage. In general large regulators aren’t precise and small regulators don’t flow. Have to have balance. And yes, the temperature is important as stated in the video. That’s what I mentioned in regards to vaporization tables. Horizontal tanks can also vaporize more than vertical if you can get ahold of one of those in the size needed.

    • @cornpop7805
      @cornpop7805 11 дней назад

      @DemonicAnimatronic The problem of pressure droop, is mitigated when using a two stage or three stage regulator arrangement, which you are using. Otherwise, your home would have to run multiple appliances or only high output devices. Using your logic, a pilot light (which uses significantly less BTUs than your regulator is rated) would be problematic. However, a single pilot would not be problematic, nor would it be for any low output device. The same would be true for a regulator that is even 4 times larger than a closely (you call appropriately sized). You mentioned vaporization rates, but you didn't explain what that meant. I explained the vaporization rates in my comment, in a fairly straightforward way. To be clear, I thought you did a great job in the video. I made one correction and provided some details, which most people don't understand about propane gas.

    So I just install the soft starter and it is wonderful. Everything went well following your video it was up and running in less than an hour. The one glitch I had was putting the capacitor back and closing the panel. Because of the length of the wires and the space I had to install the capacitor up-side-down. Is that ok? Or will the capacitor fail sooner operating in an inverted position? Should I extend the wires with butt connectors and put it in right-side-up? Follow-up: The unit failed after only 2 months. The run wire from the unit fried for a distance of 6 inches. Had to call an AC repair tech. Contacted the company and just thought they would stand by their unit. NOPE - they said splice the wire and hope. The failure was caused by heat. It is Florida in the summer, Duh! The original wires were good in the heat, cycling the AC for 9 years, but their unit failed in 2 months. Anyway, don't trust this company or this unit. They will not support you or their product! BUYER BEWARE!!

    My sister went with one of those LiFePo4 all in one units and they leave it connected to the grid so it stays charged.. They want to get a couple of solar panels but for the pennies it costs in grid power it is on the back burner.. If the power is off for quite a while those panels would come in handy but last time her husband just took it to work and charged it then brought it home to plug into the furnace and TV with extension cords.. Sister just went to the community center and sat there all day instead of the cold house..

  •  15 дней назад

    When I was looking at solar gear I had this requirement in mind and was going to put in a manual 6 circuit transfer panel but found an inverter that had a generator input and programmable transfer so I went with that.. It can start the generator and automatically disconnect from the grid all by itself.. When the generator is running it will put all unused generator power that is specified into the battery bank and when that is full it will shut off the generator and run on the batteries until they are 1/3 discharged then start the generator and repeat the cycle.. It will also lock out high demand things like the hot water heater until the generator is running or the grid comes back on.. I do need to get the line status alarm running again because twice we didn't even know the grid was down until we got a call from the neighbor because the solar was keeping the batteries full so the generator did not have to kick on.. It is a pair of small relays and a couple of green and red LED lights that are connected to the main disconnect with a couple small power supplies.. I have a small buzzer connected as well and the wife got mad about that because there was no way to silence it.. So I pulled it out to add a switch and never got around to it for close to 2 years now.. This started out as the cheap way to get a heads up if we had a brown out because in the past they had damaged and destroyed many thousands of dollars of appliances and electronics.. Now there are low cost AC good/bad automatic disconnects that you can set with high and low cutoff thresholds.. These should be a requirement for new homes as they would save people money on the electronics and might even prevent overvoltage fires..

    Feel like I need to add some input here. The only time I've seen people or really heard of people having electronics not work with standard generators is when they don't understand when to bond or float the neutral. Most modern electronics now work similar to gfci's. "Lenox furnaces are famous for this" the rectifier in electronics isn't as sensitive to thd as most people think. Itll take almost anything and convert it to dc. Also a standard generator thd is pretty solid well a newer one anyway until you start overloading it or let it run out of gas while you're stuff is plugged in and it sits there surging.

    Hauling these massive tanks around when full (especially) is too much of an encumberance. If your wife cannot do it, or children, or someone else, it's a problem; Or as you get older, or are injured (as is the case in my situation), while I like your "solution", it's only temporary and really not an option for the vast majority of people. That said, it's better than no option at all (until that time arises). Also, who really needs those kinds of pressures to cook? Being able to run at least two burners at a time on medium flame/ heat, I would think should be sufficient for even medium size families (so long as you have electricity). I will definitely agree about Propane companies. However, it's really just basic economics. And many (if not most) of our (American) private Propane Companies, are being bought out (or forced to sell), by parasitic large Energy Hedge Fund scumbag corporations, like "Energy Partners, LP" out of Chicago. Our Fossil Fuels Energy sector is being commoditized by New York, Chicago, and International Investment Firms, to adopt a model like the Cable Companies or Telecommunications sector (among others), with literally no value added, but actually a typical reduction in services and cost increases. One consequence (and goal) of this (other than profits/ dividends/ returns on investment), is the slow destruction and bankrupting of the Middle Class (along with the Recessions and Plandemics). That is precisely what the Global Warming/ Sustainable Development Fraud is all about (as well as the COVID fraud, expect another Plandemic and Recession roughly every decade to 15 years). After my local propane company was bought out by Energy Partners, and my Propane Tank was eventually reposessed as a result (I wasn't buying enough propane due to skunks who dug underneath the house), I am using two butane stoves to cook and that is sufficient I would argue for at least a 3 to 5 person family (though I have to change out the tanks every week, and need dozens on hand for the purpose). Not very asthetically pleasing compared to my stainless 36" 6 burner range they sit on top of, but also much more manageable.

    Generac 24k runs our entire house in winter and summer. It is not dangerous if installed correctly. I do use UPS units on all my computers and routers. The unit works perfectly so far. I will say that adding Micro-Start units to both our AC units helped. The generator doesn't even flinch. 3-ton and 5-ton units. It dropped the 5 ton from 60 amp start to 35amp start. The 3-ton is similar. I highly recommend them for generator installations that will be running AC units.

      I fully believe that it does more than that as I’m pretty sure the factory inrush is significantly more than I measured, unfortunately my meter is not fast enough as it is not designed for inrush recording. With the unit installed it starts off my inverters great though so I’m more than happy about that. So as long as it is reliable I can’t complain.

    I gave away my large generator and sold another. A third one needs repair but it is low priority. Solar panels,batteries,and all-in - one inverters have dropped in price and improved in quality to the point that everyone should have battery backup. Even without panels it’s cost effective to get started. I have off- grid solar running air conditioning,refrigerators, and water heaters for two houses . The electric cook stoves,and laundry loads are on the grid. We get electricity free at night but pay double in the daytime so we schedule our activities accordingly. Last month our grid consumption was 1,703 KWH with a bill of $55.01. So my cost per KWH was 3.1cents. That’s where the money for batteries coms from. I’ve considered buying one of the small inverter generators but for a little more I bought a 5.12 KWH marine LFP battery and 3 KW inverter. Even without PV connected it can help with load shifting (time wise), thereby recovering the investment but also serving as a portable power supply.

    The LRA listed should be only for that, locked rotor. It is not the expected inrush. I think your meter is working fine. If I have a compressor that won’t start but doesn’t pull LRA it is always starting or running components fault. The compressor will be pulling higher amps but not LRA and usually trip the internal thermal motor overload. I mention this is all the soft start video I have watched reference the LRA as the inrush and this is incorrect. Good video. Thank you

    Need to check with local building and electric laws and codes to confirm whether or not a permit is required to install the unit as well whether or not a licensed electrician or equivalent is required to install the unit. While codes at times appear to be a nuisance and possibly in part motivated by government permit fee revenue generation purposes (think taxes?), they generally are established for safety risk purposes protecting not only the owner but the public from potential hazards (fire, electrocution, etc). Failure to comply with a code could result in fines (even jail time?), home insurance claims being void for not complying with a code, home inspectors citing a code violation that may affect a home sale until corrected, potential lawsuits from injured persons claimed to be affected by a code violation (negligence claim?). I believe many diyers are just as good (and safe) as licensed trademen and normally a lot less expensive...however, so long as one knowingly follows a path of conduct they are aware of and the risks and potential consequences - mature informed consent - then that is a good thing.

    Thank you for your video. My Champion 2000W inverter seems to be a split phase inverter - at least that is what I figure: when measuring directly at the power outlet of the inverter it shows 60V AC on the hot vs ground and 60V AC on the neutral vs ground. Hot vs neutral obviously shows 120V AC. Now, I have read that the neutral is wired to the ground in the circuit breaker box. (As an aside, I have a 240V 30A generator plug on the outside of my house with a manual interlock in my breaker box). As far as I understand, the neutral wired to the ground should short out the inverter. Is that true? Can I run my (presumably split phase) 2000W inverter to power my house? Did I make an error in thinking?

    Hey, I want to thank you for putting this video together and the detailed testing! I am new to the Victron product line and about to install my first Cerbo GX and Touch 50 in a 22 ft travel trailer. Like you I was not thrilled to find such a short HDMI and USB interface to power and feed the Touch 50. It doesn't make sense to home run all your integration cables closer to the Touch 50 and the Cerbo GX due to their limitation of a 1.8M cable! One question comes to mind after watching the video is what rating was the USB powered port on the battery unit you used? And did you transition this to another powered port for your permanent install after testing? Keep up the great content and would love to see more on the Cerbo GX and its integration. Thanks!

      Thank you for the comment, I hoped the information would be helpful to at least some people. According to the spec sheet for the cerbo, the power consumption of the screen adds about 2W to the consumption, so this would be about .4A at 5v. my meter showed a consumption around this half Amp point. the battery I was using in the test can output up to 2.4A per usb port and for my install I am using a Power over ethernet to USB converter that can put out 2A of power, since I had an ethernet cable in that area. I would say pretty much any usb power adapter would be fine for powering it.

    There is some contradiction here. The real issue is most likely with motors and other devices that operate directly on the incoming current and also rely upon the frequency of the line voltage. So, if your refrigerator has a computer, wifi, etc., that will run on an internal switching supply and would not be as affected as say your compressor. Overall, yes, the quality of the incoming power is definitely to be taken seriously.

    I'll just say that 2k sounds like a lot for a week of emergency power until you compare it to a hotel for a family of 4 for a week. That doesn't even touch the other issues you could return to if your sump pump wasn't functioning, your pipes freeze, your pets (like fish) die or your house grows mold and mildew. For most people, the worst can be avoided by having a small backup system that provides power to critical systems.

      That’s quite the system, I wish I could have gone 48v as it would have made the wiring so much smaller and fusing cheaper etc. sadly the UL listed Victron inverter was only available in 24V at the time, and i wanted that in case I ever decided to grid tie or any problems arose. That is a great amount of solar, at some point I am hoping to do a roof mount similarly, but it requires planning permission that my ground mounts don’t right now, so that’s a concern for my future self.

As an example, my hottest burner is 18,000 btus. 93,000 / 18,000 = 5.167 hours of running that burner at full blast to consume one gallon of propane. A 20 lb tank is actually 4.6 gallons of propane. Running the 18,000 but burner at full blast would give you about 5.167 hours x 4.6 gallons = 23.77 hours of nonstop maximum burner time. Unless you are trying to boil your own beer on a kitchen range, a gallon or propane will go quite a ways considering that you only use the high setting at the beginning of the setting for most foods. I use a pressure cooker and that really cuts down on cooking time. I typically use the smallest burner for simmering soups and stocks. When I make beer I use a 50K btu burner designed for handling large pots and start off with about 7 gallons of water. You need some serious heat to make that happen in about an hour. Love the video, very informative. I will be ordering some parts to set up my new range with a 100 lb tank and two forty pound tanks.

    Inverters are like welders. They fluctuate rpm’s based on demand.

    Low voltage fries electronics. Motors that go to heating and cooling.

    You should publish the names of the companies who don’t want business and don’t care about their customers. Give them bad press because they’ve earned it.

    How come diesel generators are not mentioned. More expensive at first, but less then half the fuel burn while running.

      Mostly just because of time, covering everything under the sun could make a feature film out of a generator video. Really this was just geared toward inverter vs non-inverter and portable vs installed, and was meant for the kind of generators a person might grab from a big box store in preparation for a storm and not really know what they were buying other than it has lots of watts. The diesel gensets should certainly be on peoples radar that absolutely NEED a generator or are fairly rural, and are usually what you would see for large backups of commercial and pumpstations. The diesel is also more stable and has a longer life expectancy that could serve people well. I wouldn't say they are quite "half" the fuel consumption though, davidpoz has a few really good videos where he does a loaded test with a cheaper inverter, a high end Honda genset and a surplus military diesel genset. The high end inverter and the diesel were fairly close if I remember correctly in KWH per Gal of fuel consumed. If you've got a tractor and off-road diesel then a good PTO genset could also be a really cost effective emergency plan as well.
