I am an unemployed bum that enjoys an eclectic set of hobbies. (AKA retired) But my favorite hobbies are tech related. I have always enjoyed looking at Christmas Lights and the ones that were synced to the music especially fascinated me. So, I decided to have my own. There is nothing more fulfilling and heartwarming than to see a child looking at my display with wide eyes and expressions of excitement and wonderment. This channel is to help others achieve their goals in filling the hearts of others with joy and excitement.

Dont get any of this
I am not sure what your comment is saying?
I want to say thank you for this video, I have been doing a pixel display for the past 4 years and this is my first year doing it with a player and remote pi and FPP also added a 5x6 p5 panel so i was at a total loss on how to make it all work. I raise my glass to you as tonight I was able to get FPP, all my PI's and my 3 Falcon f16's all talking and working with each other. The time you took to put this together is much appreciated!
I am so glad it was a help for you!
Around 2000 used. Love them. Use them exclusively for indoor repairs and outdoor " field repair" during a show for my wind catching mega and mini mega trees. I use click its for field repairs of ground props or outdoor temperature below freezing. Ive also used lever locks for temporary repairs or to test that the pixel was the culprit and not a power injection, water or software glitch. Very nice video.
Thanks! I cannot even count how many I have used. Just a quick search of my Amazon orders, I have purchased 2500 and I have purchased many more from other vendors!
Thank you for the video. I messed up along the way and wondering if you could help? When doing the initial setup, I wasnt paying as much attention as I should and changed the host name before I did anything else. My board and BB came from wired watts with FPP already installed and I was going through the initial setup to connect to my network. How do I access the board now because when I try the IP Address, this "fpp" or this "fpp.local/" nothing happens. Thank you! Update, I figured it out! I used the IP 192.168.7.2 and was able to get back in! I changed the name back to FPP since this will be my only show player this year and finished the set up. FYI to anyone watching this, complete this in a single setting and make sure to listen and watch closely before clicking.
Based on what i just watched, the 40 minutes of it, I know you're the man haha. Really helpful tutorial. I gave Davinci Resolve a shot in the past but got overwhelmed and uninstalled it. I've been using the free version of ClipChamp which is preinstalled on windows 11. I'll reinstall davinci because this will help me find my way in there. Davinci will help me overcome some of the limitations I've been having with clipchamp.
Thank you Rick, always appreciate your knowledge and information. I am continuing to learn all this. I have some questions on about using a FPP. Would like to remove the personal computer out of the show player. Would you have a video explaining these and which is recommended?
I am glad they help. There are a couple things that might help. The first would be the networking aspect. If you have that configured the rest is fairly simple. ruclips.net/video/68exxlJDox4/видео.html Then there would be just the configuration. Let me know if you are having issues after you watch them it
Thank you for this video!! What size 3:1 heat shrink do I need to get?
It would depend on what you are covering, if it is for pigtails, I use 3/8"
@@harrischristmastech Thank you!!

Great video!!

This is a very helpfull video, thank you for making it.
I am glad it helped! Enjoy the hobby.
This video is awesome! Thank you! What are your thoughts on using a combination of Pucks, Pixels & Strips. I'd like to find a way to utilize a mix of all. Would I need to use a different controller for each light type or could I just isolate the light type to a port? For example, I like how pucks look shining down on the side of the house. I also like how diffused strips look with effects. I would like to run the pucks and strips along side each other and then use pixels solely for yard props. Have you seen any setups like this?
My thoughts? I have said this a hundred times, the best way is what works for you. If they are all ws28xx protocol you can not only use them all on the same controller, but on many of the newer controllers (Kulp, Falcon) you can even mix them on the same port! (That might not always work depending on the pixel timing, you will have to test it out). Just be careful with strips, they are a PAIN to modify/fix.... But it sounds like a great plan.
I know this review is 1 year old and I hope you still respond to it. I am a rookie at this. if I chose to go with a K16A-B or F16v4 do I still need a raspberry pi or have a dedicated computer to run a program like Xlights? secondly Ive seen a LOT of videos showing build process and never see anyone "tin" their wires or use dielectric compound in their connections. is there a reason? Thank you for your time, great presentation.
This wasn't meant as a review, but more of information on things to consider when choosing a controller. But to answer your questions. To run a show, you need 2 basic components, a controller and a player. The controller is what sends the signals to the pixels on what color to be. The Player is what tells the controller what to play and when. There are 2 players, FPP and xSchedule. FPP typically requires a Pi or BeagleBone computer, and xSchedule require a regular computer. Some controllers actually have player capabilities. Any FPP based controller will have full player capabilities, so any Kulp controller will have full player capabilities, The Falcon line of controllers do have a limited player capability, but in my opinion it is too limited for most use cases. Tinning wires is just one method and some people use tinned and some don't (some will even use ferrules). Most wire connectors support tinned and un-tinned wires and I have used both without any problems. But one thing to consider when using tinned wires is that it is often difficult to tighten them sufficiently. So, if you do used tinned wires, it is best to re-tighten them after they have been in use for a while. When they are in use, the wires will warm up and soften the solder and the connection can become loose. There are quite a few people that use dielectric compound on their outdoor connections but rarely on the controller connections. This is purely a personal preference. I do not use dielectric compound on my pixel connections. Thanks
Thank you for the practical, easy to understand explanations that address the necessary details!
I am glad it helped! thanks for the comment.
Hello, Rick, Another great video. Quick Question for you. I started off using a LOR 16 Channel AC Controller running off the spare PC. I am using their ShowTime Sequencing Suite S6 Software for my old local big store led and incandescent Christmas lighting. I have ordered a Falcon f16v5 Pixel controller for the start with pixels and looking on setting up my first single EFL singing face. I have heard that the Xlight software is great for the singing faces, but havent tried it on the normal lights using the LOR controller box. Have you hear of any conflicts running different hardware, or is all in the settings and IP addresses? Thank you Sir
Thanks you so much. The IP addressing is crucial for the controllers to communicate and there are tons of users that are using their LOR controllers with xLights and other more mainstream controllers like the Falcon or Kulps.
Great Video Sir, I was looking at pixel controllers, and your youtube jumped up. This answers a lot. Glad you are staying busy after retirement.
Thanks! and enjoy your new hobby!
I cannot adequately state how awesome this video is. By far, the best all-in-one networking Christmas show video of its kind. You cover all the information that other content creators leave out. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I am so glad it helped. I tried to be a thorough without making it confusing, since networking can be a bit tricky!
Great information, thank you. I correctly have all LED and incandescent but looking to ease into the pixel world. Is there a controller that will support both traditional AC lighting and pixels, let's say 1-6 props starting out but would support additional pixels over time before adding additional controllers? Thank you.
I don't think there are any that can control both since they are so different, but there are several ways to accomplish this. You can get a pixel controller and then something like a Pixel-2-AC controller or something similar.
So he called out Runza ummmmmm so that Means Nebraska. Nice to be supporting a fellow Nebraskan, Great Vids
Hands down, best networking video Ive watched to date for christmas shows and FPP networking
Thanks, I have a few more videos in the works that I think will help people!
I Love that you created this. I have created a multi-cam project is mostly complete. I found several tips in this video helpful. Thank you!

Awesome! It is fixed in the 7.0 or Master Branch....I tried to mention it so that you wouldn't have to re-flash.... I guess I didn't explain it well enough? Sorry
Cool and very great information

Hi i have an issue with my kulp and xlights i wonder if you could help on this , its all up and running but i have a few props and a tree , seems the effect off the tree is syncing with the props , what i have tried to do in xlights is have all props doing there own colors but there all syncing with the tree effects and being a novice i do not understand why this is happening , any help welcome .
Probably the best and quickest way to get your problem resolved would be to jump in the Zoom Room. There are people there 24/7. It sounds like a channel assignment issue but without more information it is hard to know for sure. Here is a video on the Zoom Room that might help ruclips.net/video/YLf4Q98y_vk/видео.html
Thank you for the videos!!!!!!
I hope it helped you to understand it a little better!
So if I wanted to run only a megatree, singing tree, 4 archers, a smaller matrix, and pixels on my roofline in your opinion would an f16 local port do it?
Roofline would only be 75-100 pixels, and no device would be more than 25ft away
It would depend on where you want the controller, where each item is located and your plans for expansion. (Are the trees on the roof? Is the Matrix on the opposite side of your house? etc.) It is totally personal preference. Depending on your layout, I would consider 2 F8's instead of an F16. (One F8 with a couple Smart Receivers would probably be more than enough for the show you described.
thank you very great information
I am glad it helped!
So Im confused about something, what about my Hansen Octoscroller? Its a hat and on a BBB but this licensing only seems to affect "strings". Do I need a license applied to my octoscroller for my P10 panels?
It only affects String outputs
So just to be clear, I don't have to worry about this for my Falcon controllers or for my PI that I use only as a player (no directly connected lights)?
Was the explanation and flow chart not clear? I tried to make it very clear and explained in 2 methods? You are correct, no license needed.
@@harrischristmastech well, considering how tired I was, it must have been pretty clear if I got it right lol. Thanks for the explanation!
@@DanielBooth1980 I tried to make it clear and if you asked, I felt like I didn't make it clear enough...Just asking to be sure...
@@harrischristmastech After watching I was pretty certain about my player, but I wasn't 100% certain about my Falcon controllers. I understood that since I bought prior to 7/31 I could probably get a voucher if it was needed, but wasn't certain I didn't need it. My conclusion was since it they are neither BB or PI based that it wasn't needed. I also think you mentioned them as a vendor that had been contributing to the project and that re-enforced that understanding. Thanks again!
How would a BBB P10 matrix connect into these network configurations?
The controller type does not make a difference. The networking is exactly the same. The difference would be the Channel Outputs.
G'Day mate. How ya goin'? I feel sorry for those that cannot understand my kiwi accent lol.
I don't have a problem with it!
In my opinion this it is the best explanation and most accurate video about xlights networks I have seen :-)
Thanks, I have seen a lot of incorrect info floating around and some that has WAY to much "nerdism" in it than what people actually need in order to properly configure their network. I hope this will help some people.
