Pens For Doodling
Великобритания
Добавлен 27 апр 2016
I'm Phil and I love using fountain pens to doodle with.
I love drawing in ink and that's what this channel is all about - using pens for doodling.
I'll be reviewing different pens to see how good they are to draw with and I'll be adding some drawing tutorials along the way too.
If you love drawing in ink, I hope you'll subscribe and set the bell alert so you'll be alerted to each new video.

Doodling a waterfall with the Moonman N2 - A Review
In this video I take a close look at the Moonman N2, test it with some basic hatching and doodling techniques, and ultimately, draw a waterfall scene to find out how good the pen is for drawing with.
The drawing demonstration has been accelerated so you don't have to sit through an hour's doodling but I do explain each step of the doodle as I go along.
I was surprised how small this pen is but small doesn't necessarily mean it's not a good drawing tool - watch the video to see how it performs!

I report the performance of each pen as I find it. Every pen is different and you may find the same model of pen handles differently for you.

Doodling with the Faber Castell Loom - A Review
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.4 года назад
This is a review and demonstration of the Faber Castell Loom as a tool for artists. First, I take a look at the pen before trying it out with a quick 10 minute doodle (squished down to two and a half minutes to spare you the boring bits). I was pretty excited to review this pen as I'd heard good things about it but does it live up to the hype? Watch the video to find out! In this video I'll int...

The Lamy LX Marron Special Edition is an aluminium pen in the same design form as the Al-Star. Fixing the nib on the Ohto Tasche fountain pen
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.5 лет назад
When I reviewed this pen, I loved the design and size but the flow of the ink was a serious problem when I was drawing with it. The frequent skips in flow were quite worrying when I was hatching, making it almost unusable as a pen for doodling with. In this video I take the pen apart to address this problem, turning it into a wonderful pen to use with a lovely wet flow.

Ohto Tasche Review For Doodling
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.5 лет назад
I take the Ohto Tasche fountain pen for a test drive to see how good it is for #drawing, #sketching, and #doodling. After talking about the pen (especially how small it is), I try to give it a good workout by drawing a big rock with lots of hatching. Is my new favourite pen for doodling? Watch to find out! Visit the website: pensfordoodling.com
Back pops in and twist locks itself and the plunger. Pull out to unlock.
Good video. After watching it, I purchased this exact pen (with an extra fine nib) and filled it with Noodler's Bullet Back. Out of my six Lamys, this combo is my favorite. By the way, for those new to Lamys, when you tighten the back, if you start with the Lamy logo on the same level as the top of the nib, that's where it will come to rest. For those who don't want to see the logo, start tightening with the logo facing the opposite side.
It's a very good small pen, and very comfortable for drawing, you can hold it high enough, it has a good balance. The only thing that i don't like is that the cap it wiggles a bit if you shake it when it's posted. But that's ok, cause why would you do that... I don't have any problem with mine. Simply when you put a cartridge on a pen, give it some time for the ink to flow, let it for few minutes with the nib pointing down.
Would you consider doing a new review and sketch after cleaning?
Hi, I have the N2 and found that the feed splits at the base of the nib, the seller sent me a replacement, which also broke, and that was years ago, I quite like the pen so I am looking for a replacement feed entirely. Do you know where to find one or what varieties are compatible please?
I love this pen, elegant in its simplicity and great value for the price! The nib also semi flexes, so great for drawing and small calligraphic flourishes. The epitomy of Zen design.
I have a couple of these pens, and I've never experienced any skipping in any of them. Maybe it was unlucky that you got a faulty one.
The nib is more ornate as it's not made by muji but by a German company if I remember
Hi! Thanks for commenting. You are indeed correct. I believe that it's a #5 Schmidt nib unit.
Looks like he is drawing on a macbook touchpad.😄
Lol - I never thought of that before but looking down at my 2015 MacBook touchpad, it kind of does look the same as my rounded rectangle! Thanks for commenting. :)
Wow, I wish I could do that! 👍
nib of size?
will you ever post again :( love your doodles!
Thanks Alexi - I promise, I'll be posting again. I had some health issues that got in the way of drawing and I'm trying to find my mojo again! I really appreciate your comment. :)
Hi. How do you know if the nib can be removed? I have an Ohto Proud. The cartridges are too small, sadly, I highly recommend buying an O-ring for our amazing Ohto, non-plastic barrel fountain pens and turn it into an eyedropper. Thank you. God bless you.
Thank you. Very nice video thank you for the detailed description.
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it! :)
Hi, I received mine ohto today and it has the same problem, bad ink flow. I' m going to try your fix. Thanks for your vid.
Good luck and remember to wiggle the tines gently! It's a lovely little pen once you get the ink flowing. I've found Watermans ink works well in it.
@@PensForDoodling I'll do that. Thank you very much
Thank you so much for this! I like to draw with my fountain pens so your videos are gold!
Thanks! Fountain pens are amazing drawing tools. I have a stack of pens to review but the last year's lockdowns (and the current one) have got in the way a little bit. I'm excited about getting some new ones uploaded soon though.
Nice Chanel I like it👍
Thanks - I appreciate your comment. Sorry it took a little while to respond. Things have been a bit hectic over the last few months (well, for pretty much all of 2020, really).
Very useful review, because I often use fountain pens for sketching.
Thanks! I'm glad it helped. It turns out that the Loom is a nice pen for sketching (once I flushed the feed out). I'll be posting an update soon showing the pen in a better light.
I hate cartridges with a passion. Love this colour though, exactly what I am looking for now. Can this take a converter.......? Thank you for a great video. PS: Just found out it can. Bought one!
I completely agree, although I find it handy to keep my old cartridges and refill them from bottles of ink after flushing them out. I use converters in a few of my Lamys as it's just easier. The Lamy Z28 converter with the red end is the best one to use with the LX as it has little posts to secure the converter in the section. The Z27 with the black end fits just fine, it just doesn't have the posts that slot into the section for that extra bit of security. I've never had the Z27 fall out of my Safari so it's probably not a big deal.
@@PensForDoodling Thank you! Just contacted my local distributor and a Marron LX with Z28 converter should be on their way to me sometime soon! Thank you again! PS: Would you say an F JoWo is similar in feel to an F Lamy...? I am very much used to JoWo's M, and feeling a bit nervous about whether Lamy's F is going to be scratchy!
@@TwoMiceOnMyBookshelf I was pleasantly surprised by the drawing experience of the PVD nib on the LX - I would put in on a par with the Peter Bock nib on my Namisu Ixion (still to be reviewed). I think my Rotring has a JoWo nib and that's very smooth but it's also a much bolder line. A fine nib will probably offer more feedback than a medium but I found the LX's F nib to be quite smooth to hatch with.
@@PensForDoodling I was offered a Bock nib but am too nervous to leave the comfort of JoWo. Might have to say yes to a Bock next time. This is my first Lamy nib, and I think I am losing my nerve with the F......
@@TwoMiceOnMyBookshelf If you've always enjoyed using JoWo nibs, that's totally understandable.
Thanks for sparing me from this temptation.
To be fair, I was able to improve the pen's performance by giving the tines a wiggle (there's a video on my channel showing you how I did this). It is a cool little pen once you get it working but I have far better pens (the Muji, for example).
Good for you. I won't be straightening any tines. That's why you have a youtube channel and I don't. Yes, Muji looks good.
@@ichirofakename I figured I didn't have a lot to lose at the time. :)
My word .. what a piece of doodling! And what a voice you have Sir! After this video I must have that LX Marron SE and here I go .. !! All the very best.
Thank you. I sometimes get carried away with a doodle. It is a lovely pen and even now, eight months later, I have no regrets about buying it. I've also discovered it still works if it's forgotten for weeks at a time... I have quite a few pens and that happens on occasion.
@@PensForDoodling you are a pure artist! Found a Marron in my aussie amazon and it is on the way to its first home! Nice to know they are awesomely well behaved. Cheers.
@@melodychest9020 Congratulations, I hope you enjoy your new pen!
Good review. Would you say it's a Fine or an Extra Fine nib? Love your drawing talent too. You should put up some pen and ink tutorial videos for beginners!
Sorry about my slow reply. I'll have to check the pen and get back to you on that one. Do you mean a western fine/extra-fine or eastern F/EF? I'll compare it to both and let you know. I've been thinking about adding some pen & ink tutorials - I just wasn't sure people would be interested as there are already some very good ones on RUclips.
Sorry, I realised I never gave you an actual answer. I'd say it's like a Fine nib (or possibly EF if you're comparing it to a Lamy nib)
Very enjoyable! Great sketching and commentary. And the background music is nice too. Who is the musician?
Thank you! It's by an artist called Dan Lebowitz.
How about cleaning the fountain pen before reviewing?
You're not the only person that suggested that. 🙂 I did give it a good clean after the disappointing review (and reading people's suggestions) and the pen now performs exceptionally better. I'll be doing a follow-up review to reflect this sometime soon.
Nice drawing 👍
Thank you so much 😀
I really really want this pen!
It really is a lovely pen and it feels great to draw with too.
Love this pen, nice review
I'm still loving the Muji - it's such a nice pen to hold and use.
Do you know which converter works in this pen?
I have some good news there - I've found the Faber Castell converter is a perfect fit. Unfortunately most international-fit converters do not fit the Muji very well.
@@PensForDoodling Thanks, I really appreciate the feedback.
@@victoriaf1619 You're welcome. :)
You have a really pleasant voice anf I really like this video consept. It's nice to see someone review a fountainpen for drawing
Thanks for the comment - I really appreciate it. :) I love drawing with fountain pens and I wonder if I should create some videos of complete drawings rather than quick doodles.
I hope he got a good amount of cash from mojo. Very inept presentation. I have A few shaffer pens of my school days 60 years ago. I still use them never had a problem. Good hold & ink flow & sturdy. The presenter is only selling himself with childish drawing skills ughhh.
Thanks for your feedback Ramvad! I didn't receive any payment from Muji but perhaps you'd like to elaborate on how I could improve my future videos? I didn't mention Sheaffer pens at all in this review so I fail so see why you commented on them. The only Sheaffer I own is a twenty year old No Nonsense and that is indeed a very reliable pen, if a little dull to look at. As I only spend a short amount of time on the test doodles, I'm not sure why you expect a masterpiece but you don't have to watch my channel if you don't like my drawings. :)
Your comment got me thinking. Up until now, I have literally just started drawing with the pen with no idea what I'm going to draw and certainly without any preliminary sketches. My channel was never intended to show off my skills as an artist but to demonstrate the suitability of the pen for drawing with. Perhaps I should make more time to draw a finished piece occasionally. That would certainly demonstrate the capabilities of the pens I'm working with more clearly.
Sorry my friend . Did not mean to offend you nor was my comment to do with your artistic skills. I looked at the video because of the Japanese pen. I had one of those and I found it too slim to be stable enough. The balance without the cap when opened was not right (for me ) . It was cold to the touch ( I live in a cold country) one of my hobbies was & is good calligraphy. I am 90 and through out my schooling had to use a dip pen. Even had to make my own ink ( carbon soot from animal fat lamp mixed with Alum and alcohol etc for correct viscosity and rubbed down nibs to suit the width of lines) This was important if you wanted to write on valum ( skin) . We had to write at least one page of the bible of the Jesuit school . The size of the page 2 ft x 1.5 ft. . All in Latin and gothic script. I apologise if I offended you but the most precious elements of our life is the languages and the written word. I see that my grand and great grandchildren do use fountain pens. Computers . Ball points etc and spell checks !!! & voice memos. Alas there are very few man of letters these days . They will be less and less. A good workmen never blames his tools he adapts them to suit. Bye
@@ramvad8388 Thanks again for your comment and I appreciate the clarification. Don't worry - no offence was taken. I value any feedback that helps me to improve my video content. The simple truth is that we are all different and we all appreciate different tools. For calligraphy, I'd imagine the Muji would be most unsuitable. Regardless of the cold metal barrel, the nib is very hard and provides little line variance even with pressure. In a cold country, I can't imagine it would be pleasant to use either. I really enjoyed the pen as a drawing tool but I appreciate that for calligraphy, it would not be ideal. Have you looked at the Pentel Parallel pens? They have a plastic body and are lots of fun to use (I'll be reviewing mine in due course). I know a few artists that enjoy using them for calligraphy.
It hurt me to watch you hitting the nib on the hard surface, you should never do that, the nib will easily get misaligned. Shaking it in the air or scribbling might get it to run again. The ink flow problem might due to the cartridge, try using bottled ink with a converter, that might solve your problem. I have an emotion which uses the same nib, the pen is a dry writer and should not be paired with dry inks like lamy. Diamine inks seem to be a better match for these nib/feeds. i have a few pens and the most reliable after uncapping are the lamy safari and twsbi eco, they will put down a line immediately without problems though they will dry out if you leave them uncapped for more than a minute. Faber castells are known to dry out even when capped and this is also the case with my emotion, but i keep using them because of their ultra smooth nibs!
Thanks for your comment - I actually pushed this pen up the queue for review after your comment a few weeks ago! Don't worry, it sounded worse than it was. I was just tapping the nib but the microphone made it sound far more brutal! Some of my pens have 14K & 18K nibs so trust me, I am gentle with them! :) Someone suggested that I should try flushing the feed in case there's any production debris in there so I'll give that a go. Bear in mind that, as I use pens for drawing, I need a pen that can handle whatever ink I throw at it (as long as it's a fountain pen ink). Kaweco Pearl Black is a nice ink to draw with and it works great with my Lamy, Muji, & Pilot pens. I'm actually quite torn about this review because I really like the Loom. It feels great and that nib is so smooth, when the ink is actually flowing. If it performs better after a clean, I'll post an update video.
@@PensForDoodling I didn't ise my emotion for months as i thought it was defective when used with lamy turquoise XD turns out that not all pens get along with inks. I now remember using a black faber castell cartridge which dried out in a week completely, to the extent that the ink inside turned into a thick powder like substance. These FC pens while ultra smooth, dry out fast and only like wet, flowing inks like those from diamine, i got a bottle of Chocolate brown for the EMotion and it works very well now. Please keep doing more of these reliability and doodling reviews as no one else talks about these. I once tried using a lamy safari that sat for atleast two years after the cartridge got emptied and it still wrote upon first touching the paper, i have zero doubts about lamy reliability
Sadly some pens are fickle about what inks work well with them. I was surprised, given how wet the flow was, that this Loom was one of them! I have some Waterman inks that I reserve for my picky pens. I've yet to find a pen that doesn't flow well with them so when I get a moment, I'll retry the Loom with a black Waterman ink. Sadly that ink is not as water resistant. Even if it doesn't work out as a good pen for drawing with, it will probably still be a nice writer. Based on your comment, I won't be buying any FC cartridges! As I have several pens inked up at any one time, I need them to start after being left for a few days. Lamys are great. I have a NEXX and a Studio in the review queue but I need to take a look at some other pens first. I don't want Lamy hogging the spotlight! XD
Do you use microliners at all?
I do! Although I've focused on fountain pens so far, I do have some Derwent "Line Makers" that I'll be reviewing at some point.
@@PensForDoodling, I'm a scribbler that aspires to doodle. ;) So far I tend to like size of the 3 and 1, sometimes 005 microliners. With that in mind I've picked up a couple cheap fountain pens with EF nibs, which at .38 have line widths close to the 3 microliner. The problem is that those nibs really seem to tear up paper with wet ink/saturation. I don't have the same problem with the microliners. Is it just because the nib is cheap, or are high end EF nibs still pretty scratchy?
@@gamingstokr7299 EF nibs on the more inexpensive pens tend to be less "finished" than the nibs on more expensive pens. Being made of steel, they're less forgiving on paper than the nylon or fibre tips on microliners. It's one of the reasons that I draw my test doodles on smooth card rather than cheap copier paper. The smooth surface doesn't tend to snag up in the nib so much and being a heavier weight than paper, it's more tolerant of the wetter nibs. If you're really soaking the paper with a lot of hatching, you might want to consider a smooth watercolour paper.
@@PensForDoodling, very helpful. TY!
@@gamingstokr7299 You're welcome. The paper can make all the difference!

It is indeed, and still one of my favourite pens to draw with. :)

Pens For Doodling I’ll be waiting
@@Shootingstarcomics I suspect your pen will arrive before my review does! I'm just editing the review for the Faber Castell Loom at the moment.
52 years old here and just recently discovered doodling for fun. i can't say I actually doodle at this point, so much as scribble. It's enough though that I'm now enjoying pens. I like your videos, because the doodling seems down to earth, as compared to the 30 hour time lapsed drawings some produce.
It's great that you've discovered the fun of doodling with a pen - I rarely touch a pencil these days because it's such fun to just start drawing in ink and see what happens. I appreciate the comment about the doodles - they're all unplanned and usually take 15-30 minutes (although I speed them up to try to avoid boring people). I don't usually have a clue what I'm going to draw when I start testing each pen! I hope you keep it up. You'll soon find there are things you enjoy drawing more than others, and you'll draw them more and more (for me, it's rocks and trees).
Dont doodle , you cant draw something out of your head if you havent learned the structure and textures before. Draw the surroundings first to learn composition and shapes, later draw from memory from different angle like from the imaginary rooftop but you havent been there but can imagine how the known place would look from there. And lastly only then you can actually doodle, otherwise you wont learn anything.
I'm sorry C, at some point I overlooked your comment. I think there is merit in doodling, even before one has mastered structure, perspective, textures, and so on. Doodling offers you the means to create without fear - if something doesn't work, you can discard the doodle and start another. At the very least, doodling encourages beginners to explore form, shading, patterns, and textures based upon what they've experienced in life without necessarily resorting to formal lessons. Take the simple stickman, for example. It can lead to an understanding of the relationship between the circle that forms the head and the adjoining body and limbs without worrying about the complications of scale, perspective, or anatomical precision. That can come later. :) What matters most, in my eyes, is the creative journey.
Great video and concept! Liked and subbed. Hope you still make them.
Hi@@paulmetdebbie447 and thanks for subscribing. I am still making the reviews but this year has proved challenging. Whilst some have found themselves with more time than usual, my situation was the opposite. I have quite the stack of pens waiting to be reviewed now! :)
45 Subs it is. Looking forward to more vids. :)
Thanks Nikki, I love that people actually seem interested in what I'm doing! I published a new one this week (the Lamy LX) but I have plenty more to come. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.
@@PensForDoodling Great! I am struggling a bit with my Lamy's to be honest. When i dont use them regularly it is really hard to start them up again, as in clean and flush. I love my Kaweco fountain pens thou. :) Maybe a video about the inks that you use to sketch with? Or the kind of paper you use most? Or maybe even more sketching/doodling? Or the set you won recently the 1990's graphic pens, and actually load them up and use them to doodle? You were very excited about those pens! I have no idea if there is a strict theme to your channel, but more doodling yes, i would like that haha. So far the only one that is easy is the low priced Platinum Carbon Ink Pen. Very known for the fine nib and waterproof ink cartridge it comes with for sketching and watercolour combo's. But honestly I will watch whatever is next :D
Thanks for your reply - the feedback is really useful because I've been trying to figure out which parts of my videos people want to see more of (and less of) and so far it seems people lose interest when I start doodling. When I clean my Lamys I also use a cheap ultrasonic cleaner I got from eBay. I use all kinds of inks in them and it's always got them running again. I really appreciate the suggestions! My aim with the channel is to introduce some tutorials (that are pure doodling), plenty more pen reviews, and I'll probably start reviewing some inks too. I may even start showing my face in them too. There is a review of the Platinum Carbon pen on the website but I haven't done a video review yet so that might be fun to do. And you're right - I still need to do a video with the Cleo Skribents. :)
@@PensForDoodling Sounds great! :)
Not going to lie but I did not know lamy lx existed I was considering buying a lamy al star but the lx has a real nice looking nib The price difference seems to be around 15-20 dollars were I live so it's going to hard for me to decide
I'd actually skipped over buying an Al-Star because I just didn't see a need for one when I already had two Safaris, and a Vista. Then I saw the LX Marron (it's so beautiful) and what I read about the nib intrigued me. I can't directly comment about how it compares to the Al-Star but I can say that the nib, compared to my other Lamy pens is probably worth the price difference alone. It doesn't just look good, it feels good too. Drawing with it was a delight.
I'm in on 30. Keep up the good work.

So glad you managed to improve it. Is a lovely pen - would've been a shame if it wasn't great to use.
Thanks - it's lovely to use now! When I get a moment I'm going to give it a chance to redeem itself with a fresh doodle.
Interesting approach. As I don't draw, I write with my pens, I need to interpret your experience. I have this pen found it OK, not exciting but could work as an EDC. If I feel a pen has too much feedback, I'll polish the nib. What's next?
Hi Chris - thanks for your comment - I love your channel! For writing, I think this pen will do just fine and will look cool too. I found my problems started when I was doing rapid hatching. Obviously this could be resolved if I drew each stroke more carefully but then I might as well use one of my other pens that performs flawlessly (the Pilot Kaküno for example). Someone else suggested that I should try it again with the ink converter filled with a quality ink. Apparently the provided ink cartridges don't show the pen at its best. I'm planning on polishing the nib anyway as the feedback from the nib, pre-inked, was harsher than I'd have liked.
@@PensForDoodling I hate cartridges. Do you have bottled ink you like?
@@chrisrap52 I have quite a few bottles of inks. I usually just flush out the old cartridges with a blunt syringe and refill them from a bottle. My favourite (currently) is the Sailor Kiwaguro black ink. It's a lovely black. Noodler's Lexington Gray comes in at a close 2nd. I just got a nice burgundy ink from a company called Octopus that I'm looking forward to trying.
