Sail, Oar and Pedal: A Voyage South

Kyle and I travelled from Wisconsin to Florida- 2,000 miles on a small sail and oar boat we built and 500 miles on a tandem bicycle. Here is a video of random clips we recorded long the way. I never intended to put anything like this together, so I apologize for the randomness and movement of the video clips :) All the music was produced by our good friend Charles Hansen. Nice project
Just wondering how you dealt with the moldy insulation in the ceiling, walls and center floor? Any vehicle that old will have mold issues.
We explored the ceiling and wall spaces with a bore scope and didn't find any mold issues. But if we had found them: I would have baked it from the inside out on a hot sunny day using a forced air propane heater. You only need 140-160F. This is probably why it didn't have issues: Florida probably baked it dry on a regular basis!
@@kyleh5101 I have not heard of this before. So the mold is killed by higher temperatures, and what do you do after the area is sealed up? How will you know if more mold begins to grow? It would worry me, since there was apparently some way for moisture and mold spores to enter there to begin with. Good luck with that.
@@EffieG-ez9tf Well, the answer is to properly reseal the roof BEFORE you heat treat the mold. Heat is a great way to kill any and all mold spores: 140-160F for 90 minutes and everything is long dead, including most bugs. There is also a lot less risk of an aluminum camper developing mold than a wooden one because aluminum and fiberglass are not food. Fortunately we didn't have any at all since its so hot down here, temperatures over 78F are a great way to prevent its growth to begin with and that's about 3/4 of year here in Florida: remember the mold needs cool and damp, like your refrigerator.
@@kyleh5101 MOLD: Very interesting. CDC disagrees with you, however. Although you can warm up an environment to the point where the mold itself is killed, it won’t stop mold spores, some of which can live on for thousands of years in a dormant state, and they can become airborne as well. It is an unfortunate reality that such a necessary element as water can be a detriment to any structure eventually. Mold spores can and do remain dormant until water is reintroduced and they will then resume their life cycle, as if it had never paused, and begin producing mold again. Also, please understand, just killing the mold will not solve your problem. Even when dead, the mold colony itself can have spores within and around it, and these will continue to be a threat to your health. To remove the threat of the spores, the entire mold colony must be removed, along with the spores. You may ask, “How do you collect and remove all the spores?”, and my answer would be, don’t rebuild a new interior over an old one. Take out all the old materials and destroy and remove as much of the mold as you possibly can. That’s about the best anyone can do. Mold spores float around in the air, we breathe them in, they get on our clothes and hair, we carry them into our dwellings. All we can do is do our best, and after that, just keep up with maintenance on any seals and stop all leaks, clean surfaces with vinegar or bleach & water, and clean often. Edited to add: Some molds can survive in heat. They are incredibly hearty.
@@kyleh5101 2nd reply: I wish there was a better way to deal with all the nasty molds out there, as well as the pesky bugs that plague us. I once had to clear out the basement of my grandparents’ old house and I ran across an enormous glob of those Japanese beetles that look similar to our native Lady Bug except they have a color variation. They were nesting in a colony up under the floor joists and the whole mass was about 4 feet X 2 feet, all squiggly & horrible. UGH! Just about tossed my cookies over that one! 😫
Nicely done. Can one get plans for this boat?
