How To Throw An Old-Fashioned Spinning Top
How do you wind the string and properly throw an old-fashioned spinning top? These toys are fun to use, but they take practice. Watch this video for a demo!
My old fashioned spinning tops are made of white oak, on a hundred year old lathe in our shop. This toy design has delighted children for generations, and it is exactly as satisfying today as it ever was. With a nice balanced throw, they spin for a long time, making a nice low hum against the floor.

How to coat wooden cups with beeswax
Просмотров 8 тыс.2 года назад
Enger Grove now sells wooden cups! These cups are made from Elm. The exterior finish is Odie's Oil and the interior is lined with beeswax. Why beeswax? Wooden cups need a finish that is water-resistant, non-toxic, and flavorless not an easy combo! We experimented with many finishes before landing on beeswax. Eventually, the beeswax finish may start to fade or wear off. You will notice the inter...

Axe Restoration
Просмотров 1004 года назад
Watch John restore a Finnish hewing axe! Last winter this huge, rare, Billnäs number 25 axe arrived all the way from Estonia as a rusted piece of metal on a birch handle laced with dry rot. John made a new handle and re-honed the blade. It is now used at Enger Grove to help shape our trees into square timbers. John doesn't usually yell "Skol" when swinging it, but often feels like he should. It...
Timber Frame Raising_Teaser 3

The roof on this timber frame is supported by 24 step-lap rafters. Each one sits in a pocket carved into the wall beams, and a notch in the ridge beam. They're structurally vital, but they also define the shape of the building. As the rafters take their place high off the ground, we finally see the character of the frame that's taken so much time and effort! This frame is 14' x 20' and is curre...

    I don't think this beeswax would work with hot tea, which is what I wanna use my wooden cup. I just got for. I would actually brew it inside the wooden cup. I was thinking of using the oil I used for my cutting board in good condition

    This was so helpful because I just bought my first French rolling pin and was trying to figure out what to do with it. I found my marble pin to just be too big and bulky. If you do a video could you teach us how to roll out a pie crust in a circle with a French rolling pin. And what is your view on the marble pin? People say they're great for putting in the fridge. But I just find them to be big.

    Thanks 👍 very much I've seen a lot of people saying mix mineral oil or olive oil with the wax ,but it's not food safe , thanks for clearing that up that it can be done with just bees wax .I just got into home brewing and distilling im making a couple of wooden stoppers for some old bottles I have found ,I was going to just dip them in melted wax and then give them a buff with a hot wet rag until they came out okay .I might use my wax to seal bottles for long term storage experimenting too......, but yes thank you I didn't want to have to spend money on anything made in China to do the job and I kept seeing videos giving me the feeling it wouldn't work without adding something making it un food safe or having too buy silicone things

      PS you look like a man who might know ,any tree that has acorns is a oak isn't it ? And is there a easy way of telling American white oak from French oak or whatever ( I just posted short video of question few days ago) And you wouldn't know can ornamental maple produce syrup of be used for ageing alcohol like normal or common maple

    • @engergrove3769

      You can heat mineral oil and mix it with bees wax, and my understanding is that that is also food safe. Honestly, I don't know about wooden bottle stoppers. My concern would be the grain swelling up and breaking the top off your bottle. It's not exactly my area though. Good luck!

    I'm trying to find a way to make a non-toxic hydroponic garden. I think my plan is to build long planters out of untreated wood, then coat the inside with beeswax to seal them. From your experience with sealing wood with beeswax, how long do you think it would remain waterproof with a constant slow-flowing stream of water running through it? Would it last through a whole growing season, so I could just re-seal once per year, or do you think I'd have to seal more often than that because of the constant contact with water?

    • @engergrove3769
      @engergrove3769 2 года назад

      I think it would depend on what sort of wood you used. If you built it from reasonable think cedar beeswax would probably be fine. But honestly, a whole growing season of moving water -- I suspect the water will find a way in. That's why I suggest the cedar -- it can handle water.

    American rolling pins work fine kids. I understand that man buns, and french tapered pins are hip right now, but there is no reason to complicate it. Understanding dough through experience will allow you to use just about anything. enjoy

    • @NoName-tn9cm
      @NoName-tn9cm 2 года назад

      I find American rolling pins to be a pain. The handles tend to get bent or fall off over time, the metal axels rust unless you wash it by hand and dry it upright every time, and the working width is too small. I switched to a French rolling pin years ago and I’m not a man, don’t wear a bun, and few would describe me as particularly “hip”. 🤓 I do, however, bake a LOT. I have my favorite tools and techniques; you have yours. To each his own. Nothing complicated about that. (Although I’m going to put my hair in a bun and tell the hubby I’m now a Hipster Baker as I make puff pastry today. 🤣)
