I was there and saw Soffel once. Electrifying on stage. Stronger high notes than the soprano who she drowned in the ensembles. (Could just wish for a better chestvoice)

Aquí suena soberana, de referencia. ❤ Es tan musical que su canto emerge de las profundidades esenciales del ser con una claridad que te atrapa. Such a brilliant singer. I cann't believe so few listened so far, maybe because it's not a TV or concerthall registration , which is a pity as Doris Soffel is world quality. Her Mitternacht is absolutely stunning . When you read her full story on Bach Cantatas Website, you see proved what you hear . An extreme versatile singer with a enormous stage personality. She should be mentioned moreoften. Bravo Doris from the Netherlands!

Ugh, a lot of shouting. Christa Ludwig, Stephanie Blythe, Rosalind Plowright, even the recent Jamie Barton, all far superior. Fricka is a great role, not for over the hill singers.

I knew "La Dame de Monte Carlo" so far ONLY from the French coloratura soprano Mady Mesplé (born 1931). Mady retired from stage in 1985 (when 54) but came back in 1990 (aged 59) for a special occasion , when she was invited by Regine Crespin at her farewell. Mady, almost 60, sang it as if she was still in her golden days and moreover, performed this Poulenc piece with such acting ánd style, that it was a valuable document for her. She also looked brilliant and her voice was still of a remarkable quality (including that she just lost her daughter) , that we must conclude that there are positive examples of singers at 60 or even 70 (Doris Soffel) , that can let us enjoy and appreciate the well kept voices and the experience that older singers have gathered over the years. I would not say that I prefer or Mady Mesplé or Doris Soffel, I rather enjoy both, as they cannot be compared very easy. Mady is a coloratura and Doris a (coloratura)mezzo. There is a different approach . I am used to the elegant and sophisticated approach of Mady (still alive at 88 years now) of 1990, but I welcome the way that Doris handled the Monte Carlo-Dame, at the age of even 10 years older. There was a Dutch classical singer who once said: what can a soprano (or mezzo or alt) add if she is 50 plus ? Or : it is better to stop at the age of early fifties. Indeed many singers stopped when 52-53-54. And of course there are plenty examples when that decision was right. You can often not sing at 50 years (technically, breathwise) what you did when you were 25. But to see an older singer with experience and acting qualities and personality is a treat as well. This is an example. It is unbelievable that Doris Soffel , aged exactly 70 years (born 12th May 1948) shows in May 2018 that she is still "in full swing" and that she deserved the stage. It's up to the insiders to judge the voice quality, but to me it is a pleasure to see and hear her in this difficult piece of music including high notes and high level acting. Bravo for Doris Soffel, who knows apparently exactly that "La Dame de Monte Carlo" is fitting her at that age. Thank you for posting, I didn't know Doris had done this, but then again, its only a year ago. Compliments for Doris. Best wishes from the Netherlands. (p.s. a pity that we didnt see her closer, to see the expression, which is so important in this piece of Poulenc) (but glad it was recorded!!)
