Images and Musings from 45 Years as an Air Traffic Controller
Our V. I. Treasures - Oral History of Virgin Island Elders 1989
When it was time to rotate back to the mainland after Hurricane Hugo, I was given this tape to inform and remind me about how resilient the people of this awesome place are. My wife and I were treated with kindness and respect throughout our visit, and I will always remember the raw beauty of the land and people despite the devastation.

This touches on several areas that were a concern for controllers without a union after the PATCO strike and before NATCA was formed. Management had a good run without the resistance of organized employees, and forgot what it was that got them to that fateful moment in 1981. So much good will was squandered in that 8 years that could have been spent in collaboration between the workforce and up...
St Croix Tower Convo

When we arrived in 1989 as a team to give the permanent controllers a break, all these tower windows were blown out by Hugo. For that matter, they were blown out in St. Thomas (KSTT) also. Of course the whole islands were devastated; flattened by continuous 200 mph winds. We worked many days with modified headsets not designed for portable radios as the runways were cleared and rain poured into...
In the Words of the Controllers - 1995 NBC FAA ATC Equipment Issues Story

The equipment that controllers work with has always been a sensitive issue in the richest country on earth. We have more traffic by far than anywhere else, but often lag behind the rest of the world due to bureaucracy dragging down innovation. There are few examples that support a public sector union better than the tireless efforts of NATCA to put safety first through practical collaboration w...
Faux Funnel or Torna-no

So here we are, the eyes and ears of the National Weather Service in the late 80's. We have to endure a ridiculously complicated training program to become LWS, limited weather observers. Our tower cab is very close to the ground and we are looking right at the funnel cloud as it strengthens, solidifies and touches the ground, disturbing it and creating debris. Instead of trusting us they get a...

From "Your Flight is Cancelled". Before I arrived, but I did train and work in that separate control room. The equipment was completely different from what I retired on, ashtrays built into the the counter top in front of the scope. I worked around several of these controllers, they really are that calm.
"Dangerously Close" FAA Aviation PSA

This was shot at PDK and FTY, mid 80s. It was a mix of actors and controllers that thought acting was easy. You can see the result of that hubris.
NATCA Early Union Promo. 1990s?

After a grueling strike and the subsequent firing of more than 11,000 air traffic controllers by President Reagan, the FAA had a once in a lifetime opportunity to rebuild the system's personnel with fair treatment and honest dialog. Instead, the managers chose to ignore the unique personality and motivations that drive such a workforce, and within 6 years, a new union was recognized.

This was shot by my buddy Chuck. Since I was on my way to the Center option, I knew I would likely never work tower again, and wanted to have a record. It was also a new Hi8 camcorder, and I was trying out a new wireless mic. I'm afraid the frequency was not far enough from all the other equipment in that tiny cab, and unfortunately there is a tone, sorry. The woman at the beginning- Andrea- al...

I spent the last 14 years of my FAA career here and shot this near the end of that time. My kids were 10 and 6 years old, and I wanted them to know what I did for a living before I retired. My buddy Toby shot the video, and the woman I relieved at the radar position worked previously with me in the tower, appearing in a future video. Despite all the grief we gave him, Dennis the supervisor was ...

This was followed by a tour of the island, video shot by Bill Bunn, our fearless leader. The Hess Oil Refinery dominates a good portion of St. Croix, but cannot detract from its raw beauty. This was less than 2 years after Hurricane Hugo ravaged the Virgin Islands, and the US mainland got most of the attention for rebuilding. The Crucians are awesome people, and took it all in stride.
Kankakee Flight Service Station and KIKK Airshow, 1992

I barely remember being at the FSS, even though this is the first and only one I have ever been to. I guess it was pretty much like I imagined it. As far as the airshow goes, standard fare. As you watch me pan the aircraft static line, you will see a Marine Harrier jet facing you. I watched it being directed to parking on the ramp, and as it hovered over the asphalt the civilian ground guide re...

Went on a tour with my buddy Billy. Things I didn't video for some reason: * When I arrived alone at the base of the tower, it was about as big around as a refrigerator. I walked around it a few times scratching my head. Even if there had been a door, I couldn't understand how you went up, unless it was a Jetson pneumatic tube. After a few minutes, I hear "Psst!", and someone is motioning from ...
I’ll be going to en route traffic control training at OKC in a few months. It’s cool to see how it all works even though the video is a bit dated.
Same here! Been trying to find videos to show my family and help explain what I'll be doing. I head to OKC on September 5th, I'm doing online basics starting next week.
@@psutherla are you enroute as well?
Well done sir
Loved this video ❤ Thank you Sam. 🌴 You and Lee Carle were always my favorite broadcasters 🤗
Kankakee is one of our airports we maintain in our SSC! Was just in the old FSS today.
It’s my dream to either work at JAX center or another busier ARTCC. I’m a navy controller and I can’t wait to try my shot at the big leagues.
I'm sure you'll get there, they have a lot of seats to fill and during the summer there were delays going into Jacksonville Center airspace because of staffing. Good luck, and be kind to yourself during training. You'll get it.
I used to live about 1/2 mile from the ZJX RCAG transmitter site for 124.7/ 127.875 just south of the CAE airport. I miss being able to pick them up. Now as I live in Maine the nearest RCAG site is in August (Maine not Ga). I'm trying to build an antenna to pick up ZBW 134.95, but the signal is really weak a hour away in western Maine. Thanks for sharing this and shout out to all of the air traffic controllers out there!
Wow Maine! That sounds like a beautiful place to live. Then again if you're going to have a hurricane, you might as well live in Florida. If you haven't visited one of your local air traffic control facilities, you should do that because you seem like a real fan. It's as simple as a call to the manager of the facility and arrange a tour.
Thanks. ZBW is actually in Nashua, NH., a pretty good distance from here but I wasn't sure if they let non employees visit. Yeah Maine is beautiful. Nice Mountains where I live and the coast is about two hours away. I'm trying to find out more on how the remote RCAG sites work as they're quite a way from the actual centers. When I lived near Columbia, SC. the RCAG site was in someone's back yard even though ZJX is actually in Hilliard, FL.@@Rick-fk2db
That lady's comment at the beginning of this video reminds me of my Army recruiter in 1976. He told me I could be an air traffic controller because of my score on the entrance exam. When I asked him what that was, he said parking planes with orange flashlights. He wasn't that far off for the Army
Lol. I worked with that guy for years, and never noticed that!
Very cool that you were able to get this vid and actually make some commentary while working. Your sup must be an OK guy to go along with it too. THANK YOU!
He certainly was. Hard to believe I'm coming up on 20 years since retirement. Thanks for viewing!
I live down the street from the ZTL Center. I would love to tour the facility. Was there anymore footage?
You should go by and find out what the requirements are these days from the front gate. I was extremely lucky to be able to figure out how to manage that much footage. While I was there, I think the discovery channel shot a special in our area. You can see some of the old scopes in the old control room on the PBS special on this channel, and John Candy did his air traffic control cameo in "Summer Rental" at ZTL
@@catwalkcam thx I Wilco. I’m 25 and I recently applied for a controller bud by going “off the street” instead of going to school. Hopefully I’m lucky
So Tim Conway became a supervisor at ZTL after his immensely successful career in comedy?
This is great! Have any more stuff from Chicago?
Unfortunately no.
What a time capsule. Wow. Northwest, Continental, and US Airways
First comment!
Inspirational! The best piece of communication I have encountered! Each of those NATCA members is a champion! Every young person today ought to see this documentary.
Loving these videos. Thanks for letting me know about the channel yesterday. Keep them coming!
Glad you like them!
The fact you even still have this is incredible
Great content!
Thanks!
