This is one of my favourite stories, thank you sir. 🇬🇧💚
You're very welcome! I'm glad that I came upon these great stories of Hearns and am happy that you enjoyed it. Thank you again for listening!
Perfect, Mr Reads!!! Just unbelievable that your narration gives me goosebumps all over even more than I heard this same story in Japanese. I even felt like the head of Uki-Onna lowering to my face and whispering to my ear. Totally immersed myself in this scary, but still beautiful, sad story. Many many thanks from Japan Looking forward to the next story😊
I'm so glad that you are pleased with the performance! My wife and I talked past our bedtimes about this story, it is so haunting and fascinating. I had an excellent experience doing this story (a great choice of yours) and am happy that I could share it with you. I'm not sure if my next narration will be a story of Hearn's, but definitely more of his work will be done in the near future. Again, if there is one in particular you would like done feel free to request it. Thank you again for your kind words and for listening.
@@ChristopherReads Thank you for sharing your sweet memory of yours and your wife's. That's really lovely. Out of hundreds of audio-books on RUclips, I'm so lucky to have found you. As an English-is-a-second language person myself , it's a little difficult to find someone who reads by the right speed, pronounciation just fit to my ability. Not only that, I really like your tone and voice, so smooth and relaxig. Thanks a million, Mr Reads! Looking forward to opening up a door to a new world of books!
I'm glad that my performance is so beneficial for you and am very grateful that you have afforded me the opportunity to introduce you to these fine works! Thank you again!
Extraordinary story…Extraordinary narration. Kind thanks, Christopher.
You're very welcome! Thank you for your kind words. It is a great story and I was pleasantly surprised with the result. Thank you again for listening.
So much impressed by your reading! I belive almost all Japanese are familiar with this famous ghost story. As a matter of fact, this is one of the most favorite ghost stories ever since I was even litte. I really wanted to hear this story from you since the last reading of yours, 'The Reconsiliation'. That was so great! Thank you again, from Japan.
I'm so glad that the performance of this favorite story of yours was to your liking! It is a marvelous story, so haunting, with so much history behind it. I've been watching documentaries on the Genpei War, so wonderful! I'll be doing more of Hearn's work and if you have any particular story to request I will gladly perform it. Thanks again!
@@ChristopherReads You've been watching the documentaries ! There are many movies and dramas as well. It's a shame I don't know much about my own country's history but still, I love the story of Genpei War , so many tragic and sad stories behind it like a little bit of them was written in this 'Mimi-Nashi -'. Talking about the Genpei War', you might be interested in a very very unique crab called 'Heikeopsis' (as a little about it was mentioned in this story) and how the name of 'Heikeopsis' was originated from. I still remember how much I was shocked to see the picture of this crab in a book. Could I request? I'm thrilled to hear that. Please read 'Yuki-Onna' (Snow-Lady?) if possible. Please forget it if it's long. Many many thanks from Japan.
Thanking you for sharing about the 'Heikeopsis!' It just adds to the value of the story that this detail is genuine Japanese folklore, and looking at the crab, it's easy to see how it inspired the imagination. The history of the period is so full of Epic Romance, and I think that the "Tale of the Heike" is on my personal list for future reading, and it would be a dream if someone were to someday make an audiobook of an English translation for us Anglos to appreciate. As for your request, I would love to do 'Yuki-Onna,' and to have it up on the channel next week. Thanks again!
@@ChristopherReads I'm very much looking forward to the next story! By the way, about the all-time enemy of the Heike, the Genzi, there were lots of interesting and unforgettable characters in the family and above all Minamotono Yoshitsune is my most favorite Samurai. As I live near Kamakura - the old political center in Kamakura Era ruled by Genzi, I like exploing this old city. Never tired of visiting there. Always find something new, something exciting. I truely admire your enthusiasm for delving into deep learing! Many many thanks again!!!
That was great. Life must have been very interesting when people believed in all these things. Thank you.
You're very welcome! With its mood and atmosphere, the story brings forward to our day the passions, tragedies, and heroism, of a distant age. Indeed, it must have been fascinating to believe the past to be so close. Thanks again!
I see you may be reading from "Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things" (1904). Deftly done. Thank you for spotlighting Mr Hearn!
Yes, this is where the story is originally from! Right now, I'm reading from an anthology that pulls from multiple books of Hearn's including "Kwaidan." I've had other works planned, but all of them of longer length and I haven't had the time. Fortunately, these great stories of Hearn are quite short, yet very effective, and so I'm very happy to bring attention to Hearn's work. Thanks again!
I have found out that there is a Japanese movie called "Kwaidan" which features Hearn's stories. I will have to check it out!
I like hearns work, this one was so sad
This one was sad, but I'm glad you enjoyed Hearn's work. Thank you again for listening!
Never heard Hearn in English. Always his translated stories in Japanese. Another very good Hearn's ghost story. Love your soothing and relaxig voice and pacing! Many thanks from Japan
Hello! I have only recently come upon Hearn's fascinating work. In reading about him it seems that his work is well regarded in Japan and helped introduce Japan's culture to us Westerners, a work of great benefit for us all. I am happy to have shared his work and am glad that the reading was to your liking. Thanks for listening and greetings from the U.S.
Hearn was a fascinating character & led an amazing life. Soothing reading of Hearn's translation of a classic Japanese ghost story. Thank you so much!
I found a book of his stories just two days ago and am amazed at the effect he can achieve in so short a space. I see that you are already acquainted with him, you are so well read! Thank you again.
Wow, that really bummed me out! Thanks for sharing anyway, another great job.
It was sad and haunting, but I found it also beautiful. I hope it didn't set you back too much! Thank you again, I appreciate your esteem.
Mwahahaha devious story
Unique & antique simultaneously! Your pacing is midnight parlor perfect & I think the ladies got a shiver from your telling. I did. 😮
Thank you, I'm glad you appreciated the selection and the performance. I just recently came upon Erckmann-Chatrian and shall be performing more of their stories over time. Thanks again for your encouraging support!
Thank you, quite enjoyed this, im beginning to get fond of Pushkin now
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks again.
Wonderful! I really appreciate that you are bringing out stories from east and Central Europe. I’m sure there are a world of great stories that we Anglo-centrics don’t hear often. It’s really great.
Thank you! It's one of the missions of my channel to introduce these lesser- known works to us Anglos and to cultivate a greater appreciation for them. Part of the fun for me is reading some old forgotten collections, discovering some hidden gem, and then sharing the discovery with others. I'm glad that you are sharing in that!
Totally agree even though I'd heard of Pushkin, trying to read can be daunting
Epic...
Hi, glad you enjoyed it! I felt like there needed to be some Classical counterbalancing to all this Romanticism. I'm looking to add more Platonic dialogues as well as other philosophical works over time.
@ChristopherReads variety is the spice of life. Philosophy comes in many flavors & you'd do it justice. Ramey
Thank you!
This reminds me of "The Centaur" by Algernon Blackwood. Dark yet mystical...
Another good story from Tieck. I haven't read anything by Blackwood but I'm sure he's good given how popular he is on a lot of channels these days and so I'll have to check him out at some point. Thanks again!
What a strange tale. I have no idea what it means, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Thank you for the fine narration.
This story had both an unsettling and fascinating effect on me for reasons that I can't quite put my finger on though I often wonder about it. I'm happy that you enjoyed it. Thanks again!
I can see inspiration for toy story and a few other stories from this one
Thank you, really enjoyed that 💚🇬🇧
I'm happy you enjoyed it! Thank you for listening.
@@ChristopherReads I struggle to read older texts like N. Hawthorne so this is really appreciated
I'm so glad that the text was made more accessible for you! I'm happy to have been of help.
Greek story with a Christian feel. Weird
Confusing, beautiful and sad.
Fascinating morality play that seems taken directly from the Lutheran catechism I learned as a child. The Protestants I grew up with believed repentance in this lifetime would earn forgiveness for ANY sin, but one could not buy forgiveness (as in buying indulgences). It was perhaps the biggest though not the only difference Luther wanted to make in his version of Christianity. A very thought provoking tale for me. Gratitude, good sir.
Hello, I'm so glad that you got so much value out of the story! I too found it a stirring and very accurate depiction of the spiritual life and the tender mercy of God for sinners. It is very much a "true" story. As an aside, I have recently converted to Catholicism and while I am not well educated on Lutheranism and the historical and theological details of Luther's concern with the Catholic Church, there may be a misunderstanding as to what an indulgence is. An indulgence is not a bought forgiveness (forgiveness cannot be bought but is obtained by God's grace) but rather a remission of temporal punishment for souls (whether alive here or in purgatory) for sins that have already been forgiven. As always thank you so much, I'm glad to know there are people out there who get value out of these "German Tales."
@ChristopherReads Good clarification! One hopes to be a lifelong learner. My Lutheranism didn't have purgatory but heaven & hell? Yup.
Wonderful! I love your choice of authors, and different genres. I loved this, and your voice makes it such a pleasure to listen to.
Thank you so much! I'm so happy that you enjoy the choices and presentation. It's a goal of my channel to present some of these lesser known gems and cultivate an appreciation for them with English speakers. Again, thank you so much!
A haunting tale with no happily ever after. But you had me hanging on every word. Thank you for this rendition.
This story has fascinated me for years and I'm glad you found it compelling. You're very welcome!
I am an 82 year old stranger to Hawthorne and it's time i change that with beginning right here 🎉. I'm also your newest subscriber 🎉🎉
Hawthorne is a great author to make one's acquaintance. Thank you so much for your support!
Perfect for the setting, time, subject matter, characters. Beautifully, done.❤😊
Thank you very much!
Thank you! 😊
You're very welcome!
These are wonderful readings and choices are wonderful. Thank you so much for your beautiful reading.
Thank you so much for your kind words!
Over dramatic, unlistenable..
I do strongly tend towards "dramatic" readings, and I appreciate that this is not to everyone's taste. Thank you for weighing in and giving me a listen.
I agree, annoying unnatural vocal rendition; exhausting to listen to
Sorry it wasn't for you. Thanks for giving me a chance!
Loved it when you played Superman. I suppose the iron lung slows down the diction a tad - but still an outstanding effort! Are you reading into a mirror?
Oh, I've been told I've confused you with Christopher Reeves - apologies.
It gets worse. Apparently, Christopher Reeves has passed away!
I’m in good company being confused with Superman. Apology accepted and thanks for listening!
Such a soft, gentle, hypnotic voice you possess. I hear rare positivity in your stories. I'm convinced. Thank you.
Thank you so much! Your comment is very encouraging, especially as I am new to narration and often wonder whether I'm doing a decent job. I feel an affinity for these stories as I'm of a melancholic disposition but I ultimately find them hopeful as they intimate wondrous things. Thanks again!
Was sincere. You read seamlessly, which is what I'm chasing. Keep reading as to do so adds enormous substance to one's life. Love and best wishes to you, from Ireland
Yes, I see what you are saying, and it is so true what you say of reading. Thanks again, and love and best wishes to you as well.
You will be a success. Your voice is wonderful. Good luck! Your narration and emotion are top notch.
Thank you! Your words are deeply encouraging to me!
A personal favorite. Thank you for posting 💜
Hawthorne is a favorite of mine too and this story was one of his best. At some point I should like to do another great story of his, "Rappacini's Daughter." Thank you so much for your comment.
Very good reading thank you.
You’re welcome!
Good story
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Well done! ^_^
Thank you!
@@ChristopherReads You're welcome! ^_^
This was fun.
I just recently discovered this author and hope to do more of his work, particularly, "Unexpected Reunion." Unfortunately, I have yet to find a translation in the public domain and will at some point ask permission of a publisher. Thanks again for listening!
@@ChristopherReads The mix of long & shorter pieces keeps things fresh. Well done.
My word,Christopher. I feel like I've just watched a movie - that's how artful was the narration. The story left me with compassion for the poor author who seems to have written his own experience with life...
I have been haunted and enthralled by this story ever since I first read it years ago and consider myself blessed to have come upon it. It started my fascination with German literature and I hope I've done it a little justice. I'm grateful for your kind words, thanks again!
@@ChristopherReads Glad I met your talented self.
Good writing from "German Tales," 1869. Respect for the reading.
Indeed, this is where I read the story! I've become an enthusiast for these "German Tales" and it is an aim of my channel to cultivate appreciation for them. More stories from this collection will appear on my channel over time. Thank you for your comment!
@@ChristopherReads Outstanding! I am subbing...
I would like this one twice if I could. Grisly!
A brilliant story. You are an excellent reader. Thanks.😂👍
Thank you so much for your listening! I'm glad you enjoyed the story and appreciate your support.
This tale was much the same as The Tell-Tale Heart by Poe.
True, especially with the first person narration from in prison and how the end plays out. Thanks for listening!
Always love this I have a cat named Ruby and I call her RubyVashtar
I hope I can stay on Ruby's good side. Thanks for listening!
Wonderful narration and beautiful, serene, living tale/fable with a significant message lying deep within. Endearing for all ages. Thanks .❤
It is a wonderful story and I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Thank you so much for listening!
Having now listened through to the end, I found this a sorry of hope. It is beautiful
I always choke up whenever I read this story as it is so deeply true and beautiful. I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
I called a black cat Velveteen. Thought it was a word I had made up, I was obviously wrong. Nice narration.
If the word didn't happen to be in the world, it would have had you to make it. A great name for a cat!
