I'm amazed how much our tastes in books align. I own so many of the books you do. I also tend to listen and read a book, switching back and forth. I'll read at the end of the day a bit, and when I'm doing chores or at work I'll listen to the audiobook. My local library is pretty great, I can find almost any audiobook for whatever physical book I've bought. I would say you're killing it in terms of reading progress. I ran into a wall recently and need to get back into it. Great video, as usual. Also, side note; your hair is amazing!

Clothbound books are great if they are bought from publishers that aren’t bad. Suntup Editions, Centipede Press, Amaranthine Books, Everyman’s Library, Conversation Tree Press, etc They open flat and are sewn bound instead of glue bound Hardcovers can be really expensive, but it’s worth it for any book you treasure. If the book is something you don’t care about or value enough to revisit, always get an ebook or paperback

She cries uncontrollably because she agrees with him. You can put on a facade of indifference, but that facade doesn't fool your soul. Yes, he's an asshole to her, because it's one thing to think such things about someone in her position, but it's quite another to say it to her, especially in the manner in which he says it. It might be somewhat forgiveable if he were tryin to help her, trying to get her on a better path (as you say), but we don't get the feeling that that's his purpose. And, really, he might be saying "horrible" things to her, but it's how society thinks about her, so it can't be too terrible to let her know what we all know and believe. You can't talk sweetly about her, as if she's living a good life, as if she doesn't have explaining to do (she does, at the very least to herself for the choices she's making), as if she's powerful. She's not powerful. She is resigned to the life she has chosen (or been compelled to live, to some extent), but that should not take away from the fact that she's living a miserable type of life. She is a human being living a life in which she can take no pride in. Her existence is one of resignation: a whore's indifference to what others tell her and think about her, and to some extent what she thinks of herself, but that indifference is not impenetrable, and so she finally succumbs to reality and breaks down. Would you really be proud or happy living her life? Would you consider yourself strong or powerful? It's because human life has worth, which implies a value system, that she feels bad about the life she is leading. The whore cries because her humanity is not lost: her judgments are our judgments, her values are our values. Okay, the agent that forced her to confront her reality is a douchebag -- but he's far from wrong in what he tells her. In other words, deep down, his judgments are your judgments. This asshole you talk about with such genuine loathing is, if we're being honest, you -- and me. Our primary instinct should not be to protect people's feelings. That's how you become an evil Liberal douchebag, which all Liberals are. Our primary instinct should be to be honest. I say all this without having read the book -- just going by what you've been describing, which you do so well, so take my words with a grain of salt.

@@soreadwithcarol Yeah, I love audiobooks. The library apps have almost everything I'm looking for for free here in America. If I'm getting bogged down a bit, I can push through with an audiobook. And if the audio doesn't help, I'll DNF. I have to be selective with what I listen to though. When I'm listening, I'm typically multi-tasking, and I will lose my focus if it's a book that requires it. So I will lean towards audiobooks with genre fiction a lot. I find that it's just easier to consume them while I multi-task. I tried listening to William Faulkner on audiobook recently while I cleaned the house and it broke my brain.
