Listen to one of the best songsters of the Southern African bush, the little Chestnut-vented Warbler (was tit-babbler) singing while foraging and a mate was responding in the background. 4 BUNTING songs & calls from Southern Africa

4 BUNTING songs & calls from Southern Africa
English names, Afrikaans names, common names, regional names?
...
Very nice. Favorite by far is the woodland kingfisher and nightjar! Blue crane was odd choice… and the hadeda, but it is quite unique so understand that one.. Natal spurfowl/crested francolin would have been my choice rather than the blue crane. Some honourable mentions that are also iconic - kwevoel, diederik, Coucal, yellow billed hornbill, emeral spotted dove and southern boubou
Very good. Why were the names of birds changed? Many names we grew up with from the 1950's were changed but some very clever people forcing us to buy new bird books. Basically unacceptable. Cape Turtle dove stays Cape Turtle dove and was a unique name and recognisable call. Now a bland Ring neck dove!
Laughing Dove.
Well done
Baie dankie. Dit was nou regtig baie interessant!
Go-away-bird called kwêvoël in Afrikaans, also named after its call. Also Piet-my-vrou.
Awesome Thank You!!!❤❤❤❤😊
You are so welcome
Great selection. Would have loved the Black-collared Barbet, Coucal and, maybe, Hamerkop included.
Okay, what of the Rain Bird which to my mind is the most iconic, so glad that you never listed the Egyptian Goose. 😄
One of my favorites ,,ahhhh you filmed him or her so well so close.thank you .
Dankie vir die inligting. Dis so interessant
Adore those birds, they are beautiful, stately and unlike many people, i love their wild cry. Your birdbath make a good swimming pool!
Enjoyed the sounds...my fav were the fish eagles and the owl ....
Those are cool calls.
Baie mooi! Bokmakierie is die beste.
of soos hul in engels sê: goat-mother-walking-stick
Bokmakieries are awesome
Loved it thank yo for sharing God Bless 🤩🤩😍😍
You are so welcome
Beautiful bird. I’d also sound mournful when confronted with a spider 😊. Perhaps, if the bushshrike were to change its culinary preference - say to berries - it would sound more joyful? 🫢 (yes, I do know that is silly)
You have stopped reporting the location of your sightings. I used to find that interesting.
This was at home in Grahamstown. Video taken from my bedroom. The thrush was sitting on a wall nearby.
Is there an app which will listen to and identify bird calls?
Not yet. There is someone that is working on such an app but I guess it is going to take some time.
White Barbara Clark Kimberly Garcia Susan
It sounds like - Elephant Park/Coombs
I have done some recordings in the Coombs area. I need to do that route again soon. I often find Cape Sugarbirds on the proteas on that one road leading in from the Peddie road.
No ways a barbet is iconic
That nasal call is definitely iconic in the Karoo. One of my favourite calls in the Karoo bush. So loud and so nasal.
Great Choice. When I was in high school, I went on a guided walk through Kruger. I heard a bird that sounded like the pouring of liquid. The guide said it was a Black headed Oriole, and despite me searching and searching, I have not heard it again for any Oriole recording. To this day it perplexes and enchants me and i continue to seek it out. It sounded like pouring oil, with a tune. It was gorgeous. like a duluduluduludu descending but very liquid. Ai tog. :)
Try a Burchell's coucal which sounds similar to your description.
I agree, it sounds like a coucal call. Here is a video I got of two calling: ruclips.net/video/ie6AupF7o-I/видео.html
Wonderful sounds of beautiful birds. My favourite night sounds is definitely the fiery necked nightjar but also African Scops Owl and Pearl Spotted Owlet
Thanks for sharing. I'll have to include some of these in my part 2 of this series.
Stunning. Thank you so much
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
Lovely !
Thanks for listening
Thank you Lynette - so enjoyed (except maybe for those d..... hadedas who get me at 5 a.m.! ) How about a Spookvoel?
The spookvoël will be in the part 2 of the series, as will the Southern Boubou and Black-headed Oriole and others.
What's the sound of the bird of cuckoos's background?
I can only hear a Southern Grey-headed Sparrow in the background of that particular sound clip and unfortunately some banging from a noisy neighbour. I videoed that Red-chested Cuckoo call in my surburban garden a few years ago.
Fantastic sighting of Red chested cuckoo
Yip, it was calling in a large tree in my garden.
Thank you Lynette how I miss the nightjars of the bushveld now that I recide in the Cape
Hi there. Any idea why the Cape Turtle Dove name is no longer what we call that bird?
It had a recent name change unfortunately by the International Ornithological Committee. They periodically change some names.
Great bird calls!
They are the 12 most memorable calls, in my opinion.
Very informative!
Glad it was helpful!
Only now relaised the Bokmakierie is saying his own name. I will remember it going forward...
Yes, that is where he got his name from. I have a video on my channel of birds that are singing their own names. Will find it for you.

@@lynetterudman thanks I’d love that, helps learn the calls of more birds. Also some of the easy to remember calls like Pretty Georgie, Victor, three blind mice of you have a video
Also Piet-my-vrou.
Even if the sound is not necessarily familiar, the thorn bush framed by blue sky certainly is. Thank you
😁🇿🇦💕 wow such a cool video they are so beautiful.great idea
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you - what a wonderful visit to my beloved Africa. The familiar sounds of Piet me vrou, the delightful squabbles of the guineafowl, and the somehow antediluvian sounds of the majestic hadeda. Lovely trip down memory lane
Glad it brought you back to Africa. There is no place like it on earth.
@@lynetterudman So true! 😊
Wonderful collection of bird sounds
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
Love this.. Thank you...
You are so welcome!

At Cape Point, where there are quite a number of ostriches, kantling (thank you for the new term) can sometimes be seen. One is hard put not to translate the copulation behaviour into human terms and find the “disinterested” female behaviour faintly amusing compared to the enthrallment the male is displaying. Anthropomorphic, of course. Thank you, I find your videos very interesting and informative.
Thanks, yes, I also found the female's disinterest quite amusing. She's kind of thinking 'hurry up and get finished'.
The colony at Boulders Beach used to be quite a large one. Since protective steps were taken some years ago to separate them from an intrusive public, they ought to have flourished, yet the number of birds seemed smaller to me on a visit a few years ago. I’m sorry to hear they are on the endangered list.
Their numbers have dropped dramatically since the ship to ship bunkering in Algoa Bay and all the ship noise and the new harbour too close to their breeding island in the bay.
I can always see where the thrushes have been busy in my garden - leaf mulch tossed onto the path and little scrapes in the soil
I've started leaving the leaf litter in the garden beds now, not only for the thrushes but also to serve as a mulch and to keep the soil wet.
Lovely to hear the sounds of Africa again
I've got a few soundscapes of the Eastern Cape bush on my RUclips channel is you want to feel homesick for Africa.
Here's one: ruclips.net/video/y0SdYGImSZY/видео.html
❤ olive thrush have lovely characters , i ofern see robins foraging , that fiery one is ver pretty too.
The fiery one is a female Cape Rock Thrush. Thrushes are cool.
@@lynetterudman oh , thank you I didn't know that 💕👋🕊️
Would you know if the clicking sounds they make mean they are angry? Trying to find out as that's what someone told me, but I have my doubts
The bill snapping sounds they make can be made when they feel threatened but there was no threat to them the night I recorded this, so maybe a type of contact sound between the pair?
They are beautiful! Maaaar hulle vreet my agapanthusse op vreet my rissies op het nie raad met hulle nie. 😢
Thank you - you make a birdwatcher out of me yet! Very interesting tidbits of information 😊
Glad you enjoyed it! Birds are so interesting to study.
So beautiful ❤
They are beautiful birds but extremely shy.
@@lynetterudman sadly Ive only ever seen dead ones (possibly hit by a car or old age )but I didn't really want to say that , have few grey mousebirds coming for some orange I put in the tree they are so cute . They seem to also be a bit shy too.shame .my uncle looked after one that was in a bad situation I can't remember what had happened it used to cuddle in his beard so I've always liked them since I was a child.
