Open ended creativity is KILLING your growth as a producer
Join the community: www.outsidersound.co.uk/offers/UkUSNkjE
If your creative process is mostly just a case of opening up a project and doing whatever grabs your attention, you might be the cause of your own biggest problems in music production. But good news! I’m going to give you a very simple solution to all the dead ends and frustration that you run into as a producer.
We’re told that creativity is all about free expression and inspiration, but open ended creativity without any goals or intentions in mind actually STOPS you from finishing songs and growing as an artist.
Going into a production session with a clear goal and a plan for how you’re going to get there forces you to focus on th...

    I feel like re-sampling offers so much nuance! Try committing to a preset sound and then create generations of it using fx/tonal flavors, messing it up a bit even. Eventually you’ll stumble into something new. If you want to get even crazier with it add some foley or noise and commit to it.

    I used to judge producers that used presets!!! I was that person….but then I looked around and saw that no one cared and the busiest producers I knew slapped on whatever was there. I am cured …That being said, I will always respect producers that sound design far more. It does matter.

    Love this insight. Grew up playing drums in a deathcore band and all of those old pieces of inspiration inform the rhythms and grooves I sequence now. I also like to engage with other art forms and let that inspire the music. I will head directly to Ableton after I watch a really good film. Thanks for the video! +1

    I feel like there are so many ways to be creative within the music creation process. As long as you’re being creative in some point of the process, then you’re doing ok. There’s so much to explore. So explore and keep being creative and learning and growing. In order to be creative, I have to pick my battles. I don’t lose sleep at night for not designing my own hi hat or organ patch or whatever, but I won’t use presets for compression settings. Maybe you do the opposite. It doesn’t matter. At some point these software companies will release AI software that can do every aspect to some degree. But that’s never going to stop me from being creative in my way.

    I like sound design at times. But it can also get tedious. Both are valid approaches. It is like painting. Can you mix your own paints or buy store bought? Both will allow you to paint. The ultimate questions are did you enjoy the creative process and meet your goals/grow as an artist. You are also correct about the hierarchies. I think it is a form of gate keeping, and self ego boosting. A way to make yourself feel above another person. "I put 3000 different parameters in the mod matrix.. I must be a smartie pants". But, then again, I am an ADHD anarchist that despises hierarchies, so maybe I see it differently than most. Glad I found this video. I subbed and will be watching more.

    I think a big issue that runs through the heart of many electronic dance producers is the conflicting nature of the spirit of an artist and the function of the music. Dance music is intended to be formulaic. It is intended to be a variation on a hard-coded theme. So there's always this fight between the rules and the creative. That being said, any random sample of the biggest Dance tunes will be a variety of novelty and generic paint-by-the-numbers records. When Skrillex dropped Scary Monsters it was a revolution in sound, but that wasn't really the reason he blew up. Some other producers could have been given access to the same sonic assets and not gotten anywhere. Alongside all the new sounds, Skrillex delivered compelling, soulful music. That's the difference in revolutionary records and in generic ones. One could show the Beatport Top 100 of any genre to an average listener and they'll likely say that it all sounds the same. However, some of the records will move them and other's won't.

    To make art, we use what we know and have, whether it's done consciously or subconsciously. None of what we know and have has any artistic value on its own. Being able to turn your ingredients into something meaningful with your tools is where your artistic value starts. Imagine negatively critiquing a painter who created a masterpiece because they used brushes and colors someone else made. People only care about the ingredients and the tools used because of the heights artists achieve using them. Don't take people who don't understand that seriously. Back to music. Originality will not automatically make your music better. People who fall into this hole chase only novelty and fail to live up to their potential in other aspects. Make music you want to make and focus on what you value and appreciate. Keep pushing your sound and experimenting, diva. <3

    There are two simple reasons why i never use presets as is. 1) no preset will give me exactly what I'm looking for. Some modification is needed to get it closer to what i hear in my head. 2) nothing will kill creativity faster than scrolling through loads of presets. Creating something from scratch is easier and often faster for me and more stimulating as well. I end up with something that has my personal journey attached to it. You learn something instead of being mistified by an aspect of a preset you don't understand.

    • @TomYeeha
      @TomYeeha 25 дней назад

      so true! when i get an idea for something I need to be able to translate it to reality as soon as possible for it slips away - scrolling presets is a risky method as you can be looking for ages and by the time you find it the overall vision is gone

    • @outsidersound
      @outsidersound 25 дней назад

      @TomYeeha Do you find that the same thing happens when you're designing your own sounds though? I think setting synth parameters can be just as interrupting as scrolling through presets... But I do have some cool strategies for managing this in my upcoming mini course! Link in the description if you wanna know more 😉

    Good video. I find it hilarious that musicians who use guitars go to a huge amount of trouble to use exactly the same guitar with the same pickups and run it through the same pedals as the artists who inspired them and nobody ever accuses them of not being creative enough...

      I love that phrase 'least burdened in their process'. Very true. I'm an artist who kind of enjoys the hard path, but learning to distinguish 'burden' from 'difficult but worthwhile', and not sabotaging a job that could be easy is definitely something to be mindful of.

I'm appealing the claim but RUclips's processes massively favour the supposed copyright holders, so who knows.

    Cool vid! I always use audio stems and its insane how many cool results i got on sound design while im just slowing down or pitching the stems hahah. Anyway using stems is basically sampling your own music i guess? I know some cool artist that basically make a weird synth loop and than chop it up like you would an old breakbeat for example. Gives a very interesting sound.

      Yeah for sure! I do everything in the box but it's the same principle as like, recording yourself jamming around on a hardware synth and then snipping it apart to make a new tune out of it. And I love screwing around with different pitch/time stretching settings, tons of fun 😊
