Welcome one and welcome all to my channel, here I cover Baldurs Gate 3 and D&D in general!
Wizards of the Coast RUINED Gygax's Favorite Character
In this video on the edge of D&D 2024 becoming a thing, go over how in 5e Mordenkainen suffers from bad writing in every single book he's appeared in (Curse of Strahd, Baldurs Gate: Descent into Avernus, and Vecna: Eve of Ruin). Not only this, but it just begs the question, why is the legendary Gary Gygax's own legacy character is being dragged into the mud. Hope you enjoy the video!

Terrible take
Mordenkainen : Powerful ❌ White ❌❌. Male ❌❌❌.
WOTC is now run by woke cucks, so no amount of stupidity and hatefulness on their part surprises me. They have placed freakish degenerates into gatekeeper positions, and they regularly push out anyone who dissents from their vile narrative.
All 5E lore is just a small group of WotC employees' shitty fan fiction. Unless you play Adventurer's League, nothing they say or do matters at your table.
I don’t even know if its a group, I always hate is when their own timeline doesn’t make sense. Doesn’t seem like a coordinated vision unfortunately.
Liked and Subbed. Looking forward to more viewpoints like this!
@@joshuakanapkey6570 appreciate it!
It isn't all that unknown that Wizards vilifies and hates DND and loves the nu DeiND. It's just that the larger problem is so many IPs are not in the hands of people that love them, that respect them. They are held in the hands of the greedy or people who are anti-fans who hate the property and see it as what it is not and turn it into the usual amoral feel good grey vomit.
Looking around at all the countless movie and game series thrown into the hands of people who despise them (or haven’t even watched/played them) is torture to any fan.
Wizards would love to erase Gygax and anything that was stand-in for him. This is intentional.
Basically they'd love to Notch him; as Mojang mange to divorce him from having any connection to Minecraft and make it seem like it was they themselves who're the one responsible for the game's creation.
This “Forget the past, burn it if you have to.” mindset never has proven good. We’d be nothing without it.
D&D ended with TSR, and imo WoTC and everything since is non-cannon 😂
R.I.P TSR
_YAR! THAR BE SPOILERS AHEAD! YAR! YE HAVE BEEN WARNED!_ I think V:EoR actually shows what happened with Mordenkainen in CoS, if you've been through V:EoR, Mordenkainen isn't Mordenkainen, but Kas. Likely Kas is the Mordenkainen also in CoS, though in BG:DiA, that might be the actual Mordenkainen, though could again be Kas is disguise.
Would be fun foreshadowing but I don’t think WotC is that coordinated with modules to have done that. Good idea though!
That is BS. Mordenkainen would have beat Strahds ass. Glad I didn't buy into these5e books.
Only way I believe it is Strahd basically doing hit and runs and focusing every legendary action on Mord. Lol That and Rahadin with Strahd’s consorts helping.
Seeing how they treated the system I’m not at all surprised
The power levels of PCs increasing every book got annoying with 5e…
@@OldManMcLoyf all the while they rarely hit level 20
The worst is that he lost his hair.
Hey now, canonically he’s bald by choice! But even if he wasn’t, it’s always the right decision in my head to just shave all it off if I started balding bad. Lol
Amen. I swear, just like magic and new editions, they make new in a few seconds, and go about the rest of testing phase because we break everything in .02 seconds. They don't even try to make anything good anymore. With this, it helped me fix that vecna book even more. Just more good ideas on the good ideas I had and mix with others. Thank you. Keep up the goodwork
Glad to hear I could help out! Fingers crossed D&D One or 2024 or whatever their calling it works out better.
for me its disappearence of zaggyg that sadded me
I plan to use him in one of my games lol
I've only finished the strahd part so far but I would like to point out he's actually made this mistake multiple times in lore and even got the rest of his all-wizard party killed doing it once which was one of the times he fought Vecna. he usually has the sense of mind to not be in the party when he sends them off to die like this but this level of overconfidence and sheer disregard for others' safety is well within his character. the only thing I really find out of character is his joining the mob. he rarely joins in party when he sends them off to do this level of stupidity but it's not so far out of character I'd have an issue with it.
just stopped in the mid of Avernes for my notes. I can not defend his depiction in Avernes tho I will say there are far worse books in the game. spell jammer as much as I love it is far worse mostly because it omits all the rules needed to play in the setting. massive important missing pieces that break the adventures and sourcebooks are worse than what is probably the second or third worse adventure and the worst non-anthology entry adventure.
That Spelljammer book seemed like it was just a DMs Guild quest, none of the important info needed for the setting. F-
@@OldManMcLoyf yeah it was rough strixhaven was also about as rough. Except it was an adventure without most of the adventure. I like system focused adventures like strixhaven it's something I think we lost in the 2e to 3 e transition but you still have to have a good module to support it. The system is their to be stolen and to give the module a run but of replayability. I think spelljammer onward this edition has a lot of issues with rushed books. Like the vecna book was so bad. DND the inventor of an edition wide meta plot. Having made 3 for the best meta plots in all of table top gaming only beaten by games built around meta plots like wod has dropped the ball now twice in a row. 4e and 5es meta plots went nowhere sadly. When it comes down to it I think the crunch and massive layoffs on top of wotc only hiring for my analogy/one shot adventure community is to blame. They are good writes but theirs a reason wotc has tar historically had a one shot/anthology team a big campaign and setting book team and a game design team.
The fact that Curse of Strahd is considered 'the best' is actually pathetic. The "people" at WotC have no business handling D&D.
I bought it because I love Ravenloft as a setting... never even opened it. I do not play 5e at all. The books will sit on my shelf, last thing I bought was the big box for Dragonlance, but my understanding is that it is lame.
So curse of strahd sucks I thought the book was well liked and good unless your saying it’s the best is pathetic because that book came out like near the beginning of the edition
@@Itachi45481 So, I'll explain why it sucks: >The campaign literally starts with "sO yOuR pArTy Is In A tAvErN" and some goon comes up and starts bellowing some invitation for 'heroes' >Random combat encounters on the way to the FIRST DESTINATION are likely to wipe half the party out, because some of them are objectively too high CR for the players to handle. >The shoehorned 'Death House' quest designed to bring lvl 1 players up to level 3 is more likely to kill the entire party, forces them to either commit an actual evil act (sacrifice a living creature) or fight a Shambling Mound, and it hinges on players taking the bait on a painfully obvious trap- so the only way they'll actually do it is if you railroad them into it. >If they don't get railroaded into doing Death House, they'll be severely screwed for the entire campaign unless you just say "To hell with it, everyone is level 5 now"- because that's about the most reasonable level to start this campaign, and even then- it's iffy. >Most of the plot is completely idiotic and makes no sense. There's a dude screaming in the basement of a church in a town full of people and no one is aware of it, and this has been happening for like a year- and people attend this church. >It somehow expects the players to prioritize a quest to go and get some booze for people. I'm not joking. >It also expects players to go on a quest to get an item for Strahd, because he told you to get it for his wedding. It's that dumb. >No, it's actually dumber- that weapon just so happens to be one of the things that will actually kill him, he knows it, so he sends a group of his enemies out to find it. Reminder: Strahd has no shortage of capable mortal servants that are loyal to him. >Any time you encounter Strahd, the players are 'frozen'- as in, not able to do anything. This isn't a spell or anything, there's no rolls, it's just to make it so you don't attack him and artificially make him scarier >Because when you finally do fight him, he's a colossal pushover to the point where you're expecting there to be a 'second form' or something, but nope, that's it, campaign over, good job EDIT: Before anyone says "bUt YoUr Dm Is SuPpOsEd To MaKe AdJuStMeNts"- if that's the case, the DM needs to do so many adjustments he may as well just homebrew an entire Ravenloft campaign. There's no point in wasting time and money on this book, it's another WotC turd for tourists.
Curse of Strahd has issues like any book but I think the problems are more easily remedied compared to other books. Lots of work from editions past to use for inspiration.
Gary Gygax should have Copy Righted all his characters and all the characters in his own campaign. In fact Greyhawk should have been Gary's by copyright. Then WOTC can't own them now or SOE without Gary.
It’s a shame to see someone’s own PC thrown around in the dirt like this, that’s really the worse part of it all imo.
Counterpoint. One of the best ways to beat a "dungeon" is to buy a bunch of chickens or sheep and herd them out in front of you. They trip the traps for you, the unintelligent monsters kill them first, and they often confuse or slow the intelligent enemies. In Baravia it is probably easier to dupe a peasant than buy a goat.
Good counterpoint! Though it’s kinda like he brought an energy drink to a big quiz he didn’t study for. Good to have that army of peasants, better to have researched Strahd a bit more. 😅
@OldManMcLoyf The next two examples you provide of Morden, are more clearly just name dropping.
What's missing in Curse of Strahd is that Mordenkainen needs to be there for a higher purpose. In my game the dark powers (Vampyr) Which gave Strahd his powers is trying to escape barovia to cause chaos outside of its nature and Mordenkainen gets note of this imbalance and is trying to stop it and reseal the damn thing again. The dark powers manipulated Strahd and many others. In his fight with Strahd who tried to protect Vampyr from Mordenkainen's intereference, Vampyr (The Dark Powers that be) joined the fight and gave Strahd even more power to temporarily overpower Mordenkainen. Mordenkainen had to flee but not coming out unscathed as the dark powers reached into his mind almost killing him but instead ALMOST made him forget who he was and his purpose so that he may not attempt to interfere with its plan to escape Barovia. In the books of Ravenloft in the 90s. Strahd KNOWS this thing( The darkpowers) exists. He's the one who made the contract deal with it to become a vampire. This needs to be incorporated into the game and is vital as the Book Vampires of the Mist makes it very clear ALL the denizens of Barovia and Ravenloft are manipulated by this essence.
That’s a good take on it. For my CoS I had to read the whole Memoirs of Strahd book to make sure I changed the correct things.
@@OldManMcLoyf You learn SO damn much when you read a novel based on the characters rather than Wizard of the Coasts source books. Imo reading either Memoirs of Strahd or Vampires of the Mist should be mandatory if you as a GM REALLY want to know how to roleplay Strahd.
Would this have worked better if Vecna has possessed Mordenkainnen using the PCs to retrieve the macguffin and only when its assembled it causes his possession to be disrupted freeing Mordenkainen who falls unconscious in front of them! So those allies present using magic quickly figure out what actually happened forcing them to get the PCs to take the assembled artefact to Kas drawing Vecna out of hiding as the pair confront each other once more shattering the artefact again banishing them to a Domain of Dread the multiverse safe from Vecna's attempt to rewrite reality. Would that work better?
Honestly anything would have worked better, Mordenkainen at least being there in the flesh to fight his age old enemy was required.
The left despise Gygax and everything he created. Observe their latest edition, they fired anyone capable of creating a new edition and just went with a revised 5e that makes characters more powerful rather than focus on what is actually important. So not surprised about this if I ever run Curse of Strahd that isn't Mordenkainen. Have a ncie day1
I do despise gygax, he sucked. But, frankly I actually do like what he created, especially older editions. I'm a full blown commie.
Wizards of the Coast has been doing power creep since third edition they started with third and just went from there and decided that power creep would be the thing each addition the characters get more and more powerful not necessarily the NPCs but the player characters get more and more powerful to the point where a fifth edition first level character can absolutely wipe the walls with a first edition fifth level character
Power creep is the worst, completely ruins editions if left unchecked.
@@OldManMcLoyf Yeah it really does.
Justice for Mordenkainen
Who cares? gygax was a douche, pretty open about his incel behaviour…. And his dungeon design sucks. The tomb of horrors isn’t good and it never has been good. 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
It's important to be able to differentiate between artist and art. Even if Gygax doesn't have a stellar personality, Mordenkainen is not Gygax. Nor only that, he is an important piece of dnd lore and history as a whole which should be preserved as is instead of rewriting it into some sort of a hate fanfiction. Rewriting history is always scummy behavior, I hope you or other people won't encourage it
@@goobaloo414 nah his dungeons still trash. His “character” is nothing more than a high level wizard… who cares? You don’t know him or how he played his character so you don’t know shit lol Ps. Why so? Id like to know some context
@@sharpshooter9407you won't get it. They've been badmouthing Gary in particular for decades now. They accuse him of all sorts of "wrongthink" so they can make all their modern changes without blowback from the grognards (a term we RPGers use for people who don't like change). I have no idea if ANYTHING they claim is true or just their opinions. So yeah, WOTC "cancelled" their founder. That's like Disney canceling Walt.... oh wait, they did that already. Or Lucasfilm canceling George... oh wait. *sigh* the Left's war with the past continues.
@@ericpeterson8732Disney cancelling Walt is a bit different, only in that he was the founder, WotC bought TSR, much like Disney bought Star Wars, so those two are perfect parallels. Lucas still lives, so they haven't gone so far as to try and label him a bigot. Of course they have done this with Gary, and even his kids. If they had darker skin, they would be praising everything that the Gygax family has done... makes one wonder who the bigots are... 😂
I do find it super ick when they change characters, i think forcing bigby into a gnome is far worse
they ruined one of my favorite races by constantly using them for dumb shit like this, not gnome approved at all.
Bigby is a gnome now? Omg
They treated him like a joke. "Hahaha get it? He's the commentator of the Giant book bc his name is Big-by! Also wouldn'tit be ironic if he was a gnome? Let's make him a gnome!"
I think the other part of this alteration was to cache in on Critical Role's Scanlon... Ptooey!

Oh yeah, just like he absolutely ruined Twitter
But but but Elminster has to be the best and most powerfullest awesome-sauce wizard!
He is dude this turban wearing schmuck named mordanwhatever is just some bald dude with a few spells
They don't want it to be Elminster, they want it to be Tasha.
Um, did you read ALL the books? Elminister started out as the coolest and most powerful wizard until the publishing division dried up. Then Elminster kept making all kinds of mistakes and he, along with the Seven Silver Sisters and Old Blackstaff himself (not to be confused with the girl calling herself that now) all retired, powered down, or just plain died. They sent Elminister to HELL. They gave him a secret daughter. I think WOTC doesn't care about the people who created their products. Look at how they treated Weis and Hickman. They announced a 5e Dragonlance campaign setting book and as a tie-in, hired the original creators to write a new trilogy of books to help promote the campaign setting. Then changed their minds. But not before jerking them around with conflicting notes on story beats. (WOTC changed editors on them in the middle of the process, after the first book was already completed) They had to sue WOTC to get their books published! So instead of a big marketing campaign, WOTC quietly quit all the Dragonlance products, including the Dragonlance TV show that Joe Maganiello was nearing completion on the pre-production. Instead of a big to do, we got a book and that's it. Did WOTC get any of their live play groups to play Dragonlance or Eberron or Spacejammers? Not that I saw. Instead they pushed Strixhaven. Why? Because it was a Hasbro/WOTC product, not a holdover from TSR. They hate their history, but also know they have a large fan base who still loves these settings and characters. So they badmouth Gary and the other creators every chance they get. If your new stuff was as good as the classic stuff, it would sell more.
@@ericpeterson8732 i am a fan from the outside. I am not surprised they aren't bothered by tearing down old characters. The way they license their IP is atrocious. Terrible D&D/MtG games are a dime-a-dozen. MtG's universe beyond has brought tons of random pop-culture lore into the card game, not to mention the recent Zootopia set "Bloomburrow" or the Thunder Junction cowboy themed set... they will drag their IP through the muck if it will increase earnings.

I get the impression from the early interference by Baba Lysaga he would have kind of a fey touch but coming from a Hag it's probably a dark glamour which nurtured his magic Talent but also kind of doomed him to be a miserable sonofa because I can imagine such gifts would give him more wisdom but it would be a cynical kind of enlightened knowledge he would get no joy out of The Craft thus further reinforcing his dower and Grim personality but you mix that with Dracula style military training and the idea that he was born to rule he really didn't have much of a chance at being a decent person
@@LongfusedbombasticBarbarian An interesting thing is that Lysaga actually isn’t a hag, she’s a blessed cleric of the Night Mother pretty much.
paste on the ground lol
This is a great summary of his backstory - it will save those running the campaign from listening to the (admittedly well-written and still worth a listen) "I, Strahd" audiobook if they're not keen on the idea. I agree that Strahd is evil, though my interpretation is "Every villain is the hero of their own story" ideology. For example - sure Strahd has done genocidal things, but that's the conquest he grew up with from his father, so it's a normalized thing for him and is a means to conquer your enemy. He didn't do it out of love of killing or wanting to make others deliberately suffer. Yes, it's still killing and I'm not defending that, but there's a nuance of separation with intent. What I'm trying to get at, is there are shades of "Evil" and I feel playing him in that way provides a far more developed villain that has human complexities and layers to them rather than a more static "He is evil because he wants this and does bad stuff to get it. The end." that others and the Curse of Strahd campaign portrays him as.
He needs a movie but not done with woke fools.
I think the biggest thing that would make Strahd irredeemable would be his lack of will to change. This would make sense for an immortal character stuck in his ways, and I think it makes it more realistic and tragic to suggest that Strahd *could* change and be redeemed (that anyone, in theory, could), but it is just something that he refuses to do, a character flaw.
A wild magic warlock, nice.
can i just ask what the fuck is with the description
Wanted to test something lol
You should definitely tackle some of the other playable races such as Dragonborn, Tifling, and Drow.
And thia build kinda sounds like kratos spartan fury
For this build i chose half orc and nohle background, thaf way, i dont get disadvantages on dialogues because of intimidation and persuasion profeiciencies for the race and background
Also savage attacks and relentless endurance are op in the battlefield with this
One more thing: maybe it would be good to get 3 levels with barbarian to get berserker subclass, and what they do is basically throw more things, wich would be good for the tavern brawler feat
I like dance moms AND your content, nothing wrong with that recommendation.
Ive had issues where i restarted my characters because i thought my stats were bad all to find out this wow
I have an idea for an adventure where the PCs defeat a witch and find Sturm, the second Von Zavorich brother, revealing that the witch was Strahd's former lover who mistook the brothers, he eventually finds Tatiana's current incarnation and falls in love with her.
Pardon me while I steal this and run with it, because the horrible dramatic irony of Strahd ONCE AGAIN 'losing' her love to his brother is ABSOLUTELY GENIUS!
