on the surface it is about child s*xual assault. really though. this song is the cycle of abuse. “do unto me now what has been done to you.” “do unto you now what has been done to me.” “i’m breathing so i guess i’m still alive.” “you’re breathing so i guess you’re still alive.” it is the progression from victim to perpetrator. going through the suffering and discovering the only way to make someone else understand is to do it to them. it literally climaxes with the lyric “I have found some kind of temporary sanity in this sh*t, blood, and c*m on my hands. i have come full circle.” i think they made it lyrically as graphic as they could in order to make people think and want to work through it rather than repeat the cycle.

Humans instinctively need to see the suffering of others to make us feel better about our own suffering. It's not always about enjoying when others go through bad crap, it's about saying "hey, I might've just cut off my finger, but at least my whole family didn't die in a house fire like that guy there".

I equate this song in simplest of terms as to when you drive by a car accident and slow down to scan the area to see if there are any bodies laying around or what vehicle damage was done. People are obsessed with tragedy, from a distance.

You are probably thinking of like slasher, thrash metal. The REALLY hard stuff. The Scandinavians do a lot of that. This is more progressive rock/light metal. I like that you guys noticed that Manard (the lead singer) sits lower in the mix. Most singers put themselves about 2 decibels above the band, while they all play at 4 dbs. Tool plays like a true quartet, not a singer and a band.
