Tango Music and Tango Movement - Sasan Rahmatian
Просмотров 1162 года назад
Dancing involves movement, but not all movement is dancing! There is great richness, variety, nuance, and texture within the SAME tango song. Real dancers listen to the music and MARK it with their movements. Others just move to some pre-selected sequences in standard, metronomic timing, regardless of how the music is telling them to move. In this lesson you are given a guided tour of how to li...
Minimal Contact Embrace to Cultivate Follower Connection - Sasan Rahmatian
Просмотров 2232 года назад
The embrace in Argentine tango is beautiful. And dangerous! It gives unexperienced leaders the opportunity to "manhandle" the followers, such as in pivots. The connection in tango comes not just from the physical contact but also from other factors, such as the sensitivity to the partner's movements, particularly upper-body movements. In this class, we learned the role of the upper body in lead...

Creative Entries into Ocho Cortado - Sasan Rahmatian
Просмотров 1082 года назад
Ocho Cortado is a rather unusual figure in Argentine tango, and yet it is often taught in a standard, regimented sequence. The essence of Ocho Cortado is its very last step, regardless of the preceding steps that lead to it. And therein lies the key to opening the possibilities for performing Ocho Cortado! This video first reviews the traditional Ocho Cortado routine, and then demonstrates 3 cr...

Thank you, Sasan!
In my view, like no other dance form, the tango resembles the ballet. The series of differentiated physical movements in both the ballet and tango (choreography) are very much fused with the musical movements. You can appreciate the music separately from the physical dance but for me this experience is incomplete. The dance lives in physical movement and any abstraction from the physical always compels one to physically feel the rhythmic movement. In fact as you play the tango on the piano, are not your arms, hands and fingers doing the dance? ruclips.net/video/k54robXeHb8/видео.html sellfy.com/p/v7xdbt/
Very astute observations! Thank you. If dance is defined as the body's response to music (modern dance may even eliminate the music requirement), then for sure playing the piano (or any instrument, for that matter) constitutes a form of dance, perhaps defined as "Reverse Dance": Regular Dance: First music, then movement. Reverse Dance: First movement, then music!
Interesting presentation. I always thought of the Tango as a libidinous dance. You have revealed it as music as well. I am not sure if analysis helps or hurts its appreciation. I suppose for some the intellectual understanding of form and structure is meaningful.
Musical analysis, in an academic sense, may not help with the dance, but an awareness of the underlying structure, themes, linearity/circularity, etc., of a tango piece is absolutely essential in dancing it meaningfully, as great tango dancers/teachers like Murat Erdemsel have spent years demonstrating. In Argentina, tango is considered as much a form of music (and of poetry) as it is considered a form of dance.
Thank you, Sasan, for your sweet gesture! You are equally unforgettable!
😍😍😍😍😍
Very beautyful. Thank you.

Mitra Joon: Happy 35th (to hell with math!) birthday to you on this beautiful Sunday, September 1, 2013. You are truly indistinguishable from a 35-year-old in terms of looks as much as you are indistinguishable from a 25-year-old in terms of energy and verve. I wish there was a piano here so I could give you a live performance of this piece in your honor. Thank you for your immense hospitality ......... Much Love! Sasan
