The Cooperhouse was the heart of Santa Cruz. So much of the town changed after the earthquake, but this hit many of us the hardest. And now we have no more jazz downtown.

Where were your seats located?

Shortly after it was torn down, while it was a pile of rubble, I snuck in through a gap in the fence and grabbed a couple of the thin, yellow bricks. I still have one displayed in my home. People ask me why I keep an old brick, and I go into the story about what the Cooperhouse meant to Santa Cruz.

It’s hard to believe that in 2 weeks it will have been 33 years. I remember it well. I stayed at the Airport Armory and then at the fairgrounds with my 5 young children. I was fortunate to be given a Housing Voucher eventually. I’ve been watching videos of the 89 Earthquake lately. There are some things I found about Watsonville but there was so much more damage not shown. There were many streets like Lincoln St where the houses were tipped sideways like dominos. I was awestruck at the time seeing everything but in a way I’m sure I was numb and traumatized. As much as it hurts to think and look back I thing it’s a good thing. I’m crying looking at some things now and realize I must have internalized much of it at that time. I think it’s helpful to finally let those emotions out.

Weekend mornings down at the copper house before the quake where magic. The most beautiful time of my life was spend listening to warmth and ordering a cheeseburger while the rainbow lady did her thing and the tap dancer got down. It will never be again….. I wish there was more video than just this. Thank you for sharing!!!!
