#83: What's the best inexpensive Gibson L-5 replica? Budget L-5 recommendation!
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.7 месяцев назад
A question that many ask again and again: What's the best alternative when you can't spent 8 k on a Gibson L-5? And how much *do* you really have to spend? 5k? 3k? Anything decent out there for 2k? I needed a travel guitar to replace my L-5 for a few weeks. So I compared several guitars under $1,000 for playability, acoustic sound and pickups. Here's my winner - the Washburn J6 Montgomery! I LO...

    I can recognize that this guitar was handcarved and man-made even though I didn’t see it happen. How is it that this crowd of immoral liberal minded people cannot recognize the fingerprints of God who marvelously created them?

      Yes, that was one of the guitars I thoroughly compared. To my ears, the Washburn sounded a lot better acoustically and over an amp, and the neck felt better. Given that you'd also spend a little more, the Montgomery was my clear winner.

    Thanks for posting. I'm lucky enough to have one of these. Bought it from a guy who has a whole selection of L5s, L4s, Heritage Golden Eagles and whatnot. It has a Seymour Duncan Phat Cat pickup and sounds amazing, very open and natural as opposed to nasal.

    What a beast. I've always hankered after a hollow body, being a John McLaughlin AND Beatles fan. The closest I got was a walnut Encore 335 which was stunning and great to play AND I got change out of a hundred quid. I'm thinking Gretsch, something that can twang and also do warm and woody. I haven't exposed myself to enough jazz to know and understand the theory, even though I've been playing 40 years, I've been listening to McLaughlin the last 20 or so..and during that time a rather nasty uh "jazz" habit (beginning with H) robbed me of a lot of the intensity and focus to evolve on the guitar (in fact I barely picked it up in 10 years and was extremely disconcerted when I did return to it, how alien it felt in my hands, a lot worse than simply being a little rusty). Fortunately, a few years prior to addiction, I benefitted from a good few years frequent jamming with two advanced musicians who encouraged me to find my "wings of improvisation" and for the first time discovered higher states where music is allowed to flow freely for extended periods of time/timelessness (wink wink). So, after the wasted years, I at least knew that it was just as much state of mind as good old finger practise that would return me to where I wanted to be in terms of musical expression. And I still love good music...John McLaughlin, Tony Williams Lifetime, Mahavishnu Orchestra...pretty much John McLaughlin lol. And The Beatles of course. And a whole list of other stuff but those are the top two. Just like Indian classical...I know how to make an Indian "noise" and how to make a jazz "noise" but don't know the theory at all. It's almost like pantomime dressing up. However, I do know it when I pick up a guitar I love. Or hear one in another's hands. There's something about the spaciousness and responsiveness of a hollow body I find very appealing. The neck pickup on your guitar is a dream, with that little bit of overdrive. What a surprise though when you switched to bridge. No twang whatsoever! Just a subtle shift in voice, a slightly different kind of "attitude". I checked out another of your vids...another Gibson, the one with the specially designed C Christian type pup made to fit in a narrow space. What a beautiful airy kind of articulate clarity, and going through those amazing looking amps. If that Gibson Super 400 puts you in the blessed space, then that's a keeper! I picked up a Martin years ago in a music shop (to try not buy, cannot yet afford) that swept me away for a good hour. I've been playing cheap instruments for 40 years. It doesn't matter TOO much with the electric, but with acoustic guitar...comes a time when cheap instruments seriously hold a musician back, and you need something that will respond to the nuances of energy and feeling you put in. Playing cheap acoustic guitars is like trying to hold an intelligent passionate conversation with someone who simply lifts up his leg and farts in reply. Blessings from the UK x

      @VintageGuitarsNGear Год назад

      Hi and thanks! Yes - absolutely. Scotty played the ES-295 and (with Elvis) the S400 with P-90s. This PU is one of the best that comes really close to a P-90. I have many guitars with vintage P-90s and this one is just at the same quality level. Go for it!

    I have one and I absolutely love it. And it doesn’t squeak or feedback at higher volumes like a lot of other hollow bodies do. The hollow body does give it a great sustain on the edge of feeding back but is always manageable.

    Hi, very nice playing, I like it. And it seems to be an interesting idea to play through two different amps in parallel. Could you please share your opinion on these two amps? To be more specific, on Fender GB Hot Rod Deluxe vs. Fender Tone Master Deluxe Reverb. I play archtop jazz guitar, looking for traditional mellow sound. Which one would you recommend? Amp power and its weight is not an issue. Thanks, Peter

    • @VintageGuitarsNGear
      @VintageGuitarsNGear Год назад

      Hi, thanks! Especially the GB distorts relatively early. With a louder band (which this was), I could never get a clean jazz sound. The 2 amps were an act of pure desperation. The Tone Master is cleaner. I now often play a vintage Fender Vibrolux Reverb instead. But on the bigger stages, I'm always surprised, how much guitar I need on the monitor. I just had some good experiences with a Magnatone Varsity Reverb - exact same guitar: vimeo.com/813500587 (super clean bebop) and vimeo.com/809847428 (funky, on the edge of distorting) Hope that helps!

    That was CRAZY!!! I was just curious to see another 345, cuz I was just getting ready to place an order for one, I don't have it yet but, I've been looking forward to having one for a while. But your playing was just crazy good! You know a lot of times I feel that it really should just be about the guitar and not people showing off, but I couldn't help but listen to what you were playing and the more I listened the more awesome it was!! I'm actually a bass player who just started playing the sixth string electric, I've been playing an acoustic for a few years and getting pretty good at it. But what really got me is, your melodic structures for every little portion, every little section of the solo had its own melody or riff. Just the way i hear it in my head, but I can't play thet well, yet. Just love you're style!

      Hi! This is a self made, active speaker cabinet, perfectly matching the GA-79's dimensions. The 1950s GA-50 served as the inspiration for the design, the speakers are 2 x Jensen P8R (left and right) and 1 x Jensen P10R (middle). It has a built-in Palmer Macht 402 stereo amp which is only used as a power amp. It perfectly amplifies the GA-79's preamp sound without changing it at all. As an end result, you have a real GA-79 stack.
