KXOK - Stinky Shafer, April 1962
This is an aircheck of KXOK DJ Stinky (Don) Shafer from April, 1962. He got the nickname 'Stinky' when KXOK wanted to promote him by having him carry around a baby skunk when he was out and about. This clip is classic KXOK in the early 60's. He was the late evening DJ at that time. Loads of jingles, contests, platter poll and the famous Kay Confidential, where teens would call in and tell secrets. Good stuff!

Year later, The Monkees did score the second number 1 song, Daydream Believer for 3 weeks for the tail end of 1967 and the first 2 weeks of January 1968.

Actually many still do, stations in major markets that do not broadcast 24 hours or other forms of signal change use the national anthem. You are referring to the big guys in the markets that don't because they are 24 hours with the same power. WGN-TV in Chicago has for more that 60 years played the national anthem twice around 4 AM to end their broadcast 24 hour cycle and then to begin the new one. National Anthem is used as a station identifier for the nation of broadcast origin, primarily started on the AM band. If you know where to look and when to listen you can hear the national anthem at sign off from the US, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, the Netherland Antilles, etc.
