The Ups and Downs of Recent Times
Like most of the months of this year, there have been some great highlights but also some big lows.
Very sadly I had to put another one of my horses down yesterday due to a neurological problem called wobblers. An absolutely devastating blow especially as he was only 6 and we had such high hopes for him.
Do you vet and x ray horses that you are looking to buy or do you think it’s a waste of money? It would be great to hear your thoughts on the comment section below.
Some better highlights though include my mare Kildalton Heiress being awarded Class 1 at the Irish Draught grading at Onley. As well as this, she was also awarded TWO bronze merits! A first to do so!
As well as this, Alf got a...

A sad few days and worrying few weeks
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.Год назад
It’s been quite a stressful time since my last video hence no more content. Sadly my lovely chestnut horse Harry had to be put down a few days ago due to recurrent lameness and he was sadly not going to stand up to hard work. He was sadly still lame out in the field so as hard as it was to do, it was the kindest thing for him. As well as that, Scully got severe laminitis just over three weeks a...

This is an exercise I use a lot with my working hunters. demonstrating the exercise is my top horse, Silver Lough. this exercise is brilliant for encouraging your horse to work around your inside leg and increasing impulsion behind. You can also raise the poles but as this was Scully's first pole work exercise, I just left them on the ground. Enjoy

    so so sorry, that's always such a hard decision but you made the right one. I had no idea horses got Wobblers, in my dog breed which is Dobermans it happens, it's a horrible disease and not much that can be done unfortunately. Some folks do what's called gold bead implants which helps, but dogs are so much smaller than horses.

    So very sorry for your losses, I can understand your worry for your beautiful mare. Fingers crossed tightly she gives you a stunning foal to build your present and future dreams on meantime and you get the chance to produce some stunning youngsters anyway. Isn't a good mare something to behold though? She looks lovely. When I was a few years younger than you I bought a tremendous 17h mare, she was the love of of my life, a dream to ride and a dream to behold. Rode like a phoenix and danced like an angel. She could also jump stunningly well, unbelievable scope to her, it felt like she could defy gravity and she loved every second of it. The power behind, that moment in the air I would give anything to have back. For a big horse just so incredibly athletic and supple. I've just never had the same feel on any other horse, not one I could afford. She could be prickly it's true and at times you had to dance around her lol but once I was onboard she was magnificent, instantly going into another gear where she wanted to be with you for you every second. Never seeming tired or out of breath, eye always on the next job. A slight lameness upfront took me to the vet after having her for a year, she was just six. The vet said the foot would be fine after a few days rest but that she also had a massive hole in the heart. I think I cried for every day that I had ever sat on her and because I ever sat on her. Some horses just speak to you and you just cannot imagine anything could be wrong, those eyes, you just fall in love, no going back. She so entranced me that I didn't even get a vet to look her over ,took her straight home. Never even tried her. She escaped the yard when she was trotted up for me to look her over, it was almost dark already but what I saw in her free movement moved me so much I just had to have her. She came back to the yard on her own in pitch darkness, head high and snorting, stood by my side stretched to her full height almost swallowing me in her heaving breath. I couldn't go home without her, my heart lost in hers. My hand was already on her hard neck as she lowered her head into my waiting hand. I can't even tell you the rest of her story it's still too sore and raw twenty years later. Dont fall in love untill full vetting. You know I felt honoured to have known her for the short time I was with her, deeply so. It gave me so much to have even known such a horse. Yes my ambitions were struck down, yes I didn't want to look at another horse for years. I'm sure you feel some of the same at least. It's sad but it's a bitter sweetness too. They teach us so much, I believe I became a better man for all of it. They're definitely worth the sadness, the joy. Things will be Ok.

    You have had so much horse trauma and loss so early in your life, but it will make you a greater horse man in the end and how much more sweet the future successes will be after such heartbreaks. ..The last gift of love we give them is to prevent and end their suffering by helping them pass… I am so so very sorry for your loss.

    Hopefully Alf won't be your next injury. Sorry but I don't believe horses were meant to jump such high poles one after another. So many beautiful horses end up lame etc. Then have to be put down due to their injury just for your pleasure to win a ribbon. Sad you can't enjoy these beautiful animals for what they are. There are other things that you could do that wouldn't be so hard on there legs. You are so lucky to have the funds and facilities to have these amazing animals but you continue to jump such high jumps knowing you or your horse could get injured......sad.

    • @1jazzyphae
      @1jazzyphae Год назад

      They weren't meant to jump at all. There was a video I watched on YT about horses in pain. 95% or 90% are in pain or lame. Including dressage horses. It breaks my heart they will literally break down doing a job. And people don't care. Why can't we treat them better not do these things to them?

    • @xhogun8578
      @xhogun8578 Год назад

      No, under the highway code rule 52 you have to have a saddle and bridle. Also insurance will probably be void if you don't. Rule 52 - Saddlery "Never ride a horse without both a saddle and bridle."
